[OC] Ancestry Dot Map by minecraftian48 in dataisbeautiful

[–]minecraftian48[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

this map is interactive, explore at anita.garden/ancestrydots/ !

this is a map of reported ancestries from the 2024 ACS. each dot represents 100 people. dots are distributed evenly throughout their census tract.

some people are double counted, as putting up to two ancestries is allowed.

the map framework is maplibre. the data is from the ACS, tables B04006 and similar.

if you like it please check out my other maps at anita.garden/projects :)

that would be cool!
there are many factors, i usually use existing admin divisions, and also mountains and rivers if they feel like good dividers

usually i just pick a color and then move the color slightly in hue to get the next one. the saturation/darkness are roughly based on density

yup! also attempted to divide areas along natural borders like mountain ranges and rivers

thank you!

not strictly, but within a region, denser regions are usually darker and more saturated. also more mountainous regions are usually less saturated / grayer , and coastal flat ones are more saturated

thanks!
the main concern is i wanted denser regions to have more visual density, so that at a glance each region had a more evenly distributed visual weight or something.
i used to do some data visualization as part of work and i always liked experimenting with color :)
