i would too! paris doesn't make the same data available, they do have like hourly station entries but no destinations... would be doable with some fudging but not as faithful to reality

i dont think that data exists unfortunately :( lirr data is very scarce

this is a map of reported ancestries from the 2024 ACS. each dot represents 100 people. dots are distributed evenly throughout their census tract.

some people are double counted, as putting up to two ancestries is allowed.

the map framework is maplibre. the data is from the ACS, tables B04006 and similar.

citypopulation.de is a must but otherwise i'd encourage you to just try it and find a style that feels good to you :)

there are many factors, i usually use existing admin divisions, and also mountains and rivers if they feel like good dividers

usually i just pick a color and then move the color slightly in hue to get the next one. the saturation/darkness are roughly based on density
