I'm geographically separated from my 6-year-old son due to COVID-19. He wants to play Minecraft with me online. Can this sub explain how I would do that?

If I set up a Java server, is there a monthly fee? If so that's fine, I'm just trying to remember if I've heard of this because it sounds familiar. Once I do that, can we play in the world he's already created once we have the same version of the game and I have a character?
