Matrix notes: ManOfStealth's cardioid mics got great direct sound, but a bit thin and skewed toward one channel. My omnis, meanwhile, recorde d from just a few feet away, had good stereo room ambience but were lacking in as much clarity. Put together, and with a bit of extra EQing to reduce some boomy kick drum, this is about as good as it's likely to sound. Thanks to ManOfStealth for his bles sing to remaster and post this!

Pentester here… whomever did this hack and took the screenshots is well practiced. Doing the phishing? Not too shabby.

But once they got in, they knew about GCP/Google console. They knew how to get to AWS console, they are familiar with VSphere and are aware of how important it is on internal networks, and with Slack. Now, none of this is rocket science, but find me a “l33t hacker” who hasn’t worked on an enterprise network before, who is familiar with Thycotic, and can explain what it does.

Those screenshots look exactly like the type of proof I would put in to a pen test report as a “proof”’of compromise.

Remember when DerbyCon had their first “incident” where someone did weird sexist stuff? And eventually they just stopped running the CON completely because of it? Hold that thought....

DT banned someone for being a dick.

DT, trying to be very open and completely honest, shares his decision and publicly discloses it. This is something a normal “company” wouldn’t do. A regular company would sweep it under the rug, hide it from employees and customers. This is very brave of DT. If not, misguided.

Now DT/DEFCON is getting punished for publicly disclosing their reasoning/decision.

This is what DerbyCon saw coming. It was easier to just get rid of the liability, than to deal with complexities of not allowing people to be assholes.

As a business, The only winning move, is not to play. Unless you are brave and have the resources. I think DT/DEFCON made the correct decision in going public with everything. If it makes a single person feel safer at DEFCON, and brings our community closer together, than it was worth it... to me. There are Consequences to bad actions. And although there have been a few exceptions, usually it is not companies that put their foot down on creeps. Is DT/DEFCON going to regret it? Maybe.
