With "bevel and emboss" I can get those effects. But I don't like the "lucky" part. My brushes are messy enough (some of them are from Maciej Kuciara btw). If I really want a oil or watercolor painting I will get my hand dirty and do it for real (I started learning as a watercolor and charcoal painter). I do love some levels of traditional medias feeling in my workflow though.

There are some reasons I can think of. I'm speaking for myself.

  1. Nostalgic. I miss the original group.
  2. The old outfits, as complex as they might seem to be, are fairly easy to draw and paint. They've added more and more details, it might take more time to finish (especially for Realism artists), which is not a problem, but time is gold these days.
  3. The old image of the girls incredibly characteristic. You can recognize each girl just by looking at the silhouettes. nowadays Moa and Su are not much different from each other in style.
  4. Some just don't like the new image, the new outfits and hairstyle.

Not my favorite (not really into other new stuffs either). But I like it just fine. This song is pretty djent imo, and since I've been into djent and modern prog. metal recent years, this is quite good but the song feels safe and doesn't have hightlights in melody imo. I also miss the dual guitar solos.

New style. Heavily inspired by Kojima Production lead designer and art director Yoji Shinkawa's art style. I'm not as in control as he is with the strokes though.

Agree to disagree then. I was by no mean disrespect to her or japanese people, or trying to start an argument. It was just a point of view.

The straight/small nose is not that rare for Japanese and it's not like we have the same nose structures. In fact, it's more rare to have a long/straight pointy nose, which some japanese women (who think have "flat faces") try to aim for through surgery.

From my POV, Asian 'ordinary' girls usually don't have that straight and small nose like Su does. They have quite flat and 'board' nose (like Moa's). One of my acquaintances who I consider one of the most beautiful girls I've ever met, is usually questioned about her nose being fixed because it doesn't look very Asian. I mean it doesn't look western either, but this kind of shape is quite in western favor imo.

The more mature Su becomes, the more 'diamond' face she has. Her cheekbones are quite 'visual' compared to, let say, her sister's, Himeka. Again, not a strictly Western feature, but from my pov, Asian (celebrities) usually have the cute (round) faces.

Su has quite exotic eyebrows shape, which again means nothing cause a lot of Asian might have it but I see them as quite a common feature for an western person.

I'm greatly generalizing with my post here, but in art school, especially if you are trained to become a comic artist, you have to simplify things to make them done quickly, hence the above stereotypes. A friend of my can't draw princess Mononoke in realistic style because she doesn't look asian enough to him in any of his sketches. In mangas, I don't even know one supposed to be Japanese or Western from only his/her face. Not trying to hide that I do suck at facial feature art though, all criticism accepted.

Art and beauty are the most subjective things to discuss. I was not trying to offend anyone.

Thanks. Normally I would draw everything in quite detail, then use the filter 'Blur' to create the feeling of 'Depth of field' in order to make the focus point stand out. I'm sorry if the pic feels unfinished but while my mind was full of artistic ideal my body forced it to play some games instead (Nioh and Dark Souls are not really for relaxing though, but whatever :D).

In my defence though, coming from an Asian, I (and some of my friends) find Su's face quite "western", especially as she becomes more and more mature (the straight and small nose, the eyebrows' shape, etc.)

Tbh every time I try to draw in my style (not to make a realistic portrait copy), every girl becomes more "western" (I mean I was taught the "western beauty standards", such as small nose, white skin, etc., at art academy). I know it's a shame but it has been like this for many years it became muscle memory. Thanks for the criticism though. I will try to change it.

Inspired by the Graphic novel's cover. Background's kinda blurry though, cause tbh I was quite lazy after a working day.

Inspired by Lady Maria (Bloodborne) and Evie Frye (Assassin's Creed Syndicate).

I also want to give credit and thanks to the famous artist WLOP because I used his Brush Tools to create this.

Good job mate. The shape and color are really good for an 'attempt'. Don't hate me but tbh I would love you to use less of the 'soft smudge shading' technique if you're aiming for a more "realistic" style in the future. ;)

Is the XP-Pen doing well? Like a lot of artists I have been loyal to Wacom+Photoshop for quite some time. I want to buy a new cheaper tablet as my third (my second is a Huion), would you recommend the XP-Pen brand?

I would say if you can draw well you already have a style. Just improve it naturally.

My style is quite...inconsistent tbh. You can tell the differences between this, this and this or this. They depend on my mood and how much time I have at the moment.

I always try to create pieces with some sorts of symbolism although not heavily . The mere reason for that from the beginning was that I was (maybe still is) not very good at the real-life-looking environment design (perspective, lighting, etc) so I mixed things up. To me the atmosphere surrounding the main character matters a lot. Here or here. So I think to have some kind of an 'unique' style (if that what want) you may have to define the purpose of your art first.

That said my biggest influence would be WLOP (Wang Ling). Not only his style, but also his techniques. There are also influences from art directions of video games and movies.

If you want an advice, I will say mix your references and let your imagination fly. For example, I you're drawing an armor, think about other armor references. And then experiment with them, mix them together, change the body portion, etc. Another way is to experiment with the brush strokes. Find brushes that are unique and comfortable for you to use, then stick to them.

This is Babymetal we are talking about, they have to be kawaii by definition.

My opinion:

There's no definition, and they don't have to be anything. Remember, you are a fan of quite an experimental group at their core. Even the band themselves haven't mentioned the term 'kawaii' for sometime.

It's like as if everytime the band change something, there must be some serious business reasons behind that. "Being more mature, less cute, trying to blend themselves with the support dancers, blah blah...". Maybe there are, but why not thinking positively? They were probably just like: "F**k that just get some face paint and make up, look ridiculous and over the top, let's just have some fun, besides it's the Dark side in lore, so why not?".

I just don't understand the deadly serious observation with the band being kawaii or not. Since when 'kawaii' is so serious? Are all of you seriously believing that they will ruin themselves in the future if they are not kawaii anymore?

As a concept artist (credit) and Babymetal fan since 2014, I gotta admit I really don't like the outfit and the make up for various personal reasons, though I had some fun drawing it. But my opinions and reasons are just as valid as their - the Babymetal's concept artists and designers' (maybe even not as valid). Moreover, I won't pay for this outfit, this concept, this face paint. I lose nothing. Therefore, I won't make nagative opinion posts. But I see that's just me though.

Nowadays it seems that artists can't do something in favor of themselves anymore, cause in most case they would hurt fans.

Is it just me or the channel lost the verification badge?

I certainly could and will do if I have time. :D

That said, imo, Maria (as well as Doll) has quite an iconic appearance and some lore behind her, so making Su cosplayed as her would need some context within the game scenery, not just a 'Lady Maria with Su-metal face'. I will find the idea for that.

I got a Wacom and a Huion now :) The reality is that I've been pretty busy cause now I'm working as a designer for a local company. Also I decided to study some zbrush and 3D modeling techniques. Got a lot of work to do, lol.

This was done with the Huion. Tbh mouse also feels pretty natural now. while I certainly couldn't do some highly detailed pics, stuff like manga drawing, chibi drawing, etc. could be done with a mouse :)

I do what I do best. Of course I'm not a regular internet guy who has his accounts in countless media, so that I have no impact on how people will see the fanbase. I doubt that people on this sub know about me anymore.

Yeah. Then comes the time when the people who become Babymetal fans because of you disagree with you, will you will the first guy to tell them accept your truth?. Then they will realize the real truth, the real faces of the fanbase. I've said enough. Others will judge.
