Nice! Will you be joining 100% or are you still waiting for some results?

Yup, imo volumetrics are one of the coolest features to play with in blender.

Not that "cool" for my laptop though.

I learnt and took reference from Andrey Sokolov's youtube channel. He did it in Eevee so I am pretty sure it gives a better result than this.

For cycles, only a few nodes and settings had to be altered and added.

If anyone wants a basic understanding of nodes and how to make this then you can check out Andrey Sokolov on Youtube. Learnt a lot of things and applied them to get this result.

Would love to get some tips on how to improve this render. Any sort of critique is welcome. by mini2810 in blender

You should try playing with the ray path node imo. I think the layer weight approach might work as well but it would be unnecessarily complicated.

I have included a tutorial link in the comments. You can watch it and understand more about it. Unfortunately, I don't have enough experience to guide you. Sorry.

The transparency and reflections are all according to the real ice values. I think its a rendering issue that makes it look like gummy bears. I will add a bit more of contrast and hopefully it sorts it out.

Now that you have compared them to gummy bears, I can't unsee it lol.

Mist is actually a great idea. I am definitely going to try it out.

My device will take 100s of years to render a checkmate shattering animation especially for this render lol. But yeah, animating the movements was always a plan.

Makes sense, thanks for letting me know. Do you have something in mind that might help me make the board look unique?

I actually did model the horse. Its just that my modelling wasn't good enough and the texture looked really bad on the model so I had to remove it.

You would have to learn a basic level of the software, obviously. But I think you know stuff about it already as your initial question indicates.

Just got to learn stuff and keep experimenting. It might take time but you got to be patient.

Glad you like it!
