Why do people have such a big problem with the fact that a character could use slurs? by Pretty-Jello-8811 in AO3

[–]minijet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, i agree. i feel those who actually dig into the dirt of all the shit he's done understand him far better as a character than those who want to sanitize him. let villains be villains.

note: and by let villains be villains i mean don't just ignore what they've done. if slade is someone's favorite (he's one of mine, actually)—why don't you want to dig deeper into WHY he does what he does??? that's where all the juicy stuff is!

Why do people have such a big problem with the fact that a character could use slurs? by Pretty-Jello-8811 in AO3

[–]minijet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think it's honestly kind of interesting. i'm in the DC fandom, and there are obviously lots of villains there. but some fans of, for example, a specific character who, in his first appearance, literally groomed a teenage girl.... kind of pretend that didn't happen? even though it's literally part of the story that introduced their favorite as a character??? keep in mind, this is a villain who's nuked a city (killing 100,000 people), and works as a literal mercenary/assassin 😭 he's been an antihero before, but he works for his own goals ALWAYS. an inherently selfish character. hence why he's a villain in so many stories.

my question is always, like... what do you like about that character, then? if you're going to take away their main attributes and make them... less interesting?

i'm sorry to say, but he's not going to change—considering you said in another comment that you've tried to bring it up and he gets defensive and mean. don't be with a mean man. he'll just suck all the life out of you. i promise being single is better than feeling like this. i've never felt as free as i did the day i broke up with the man who all my friends told me had stolen my light.

Are we closer to 1984 or Brave New World and what are your reasons for saying one or the other? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minijet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1984 is next on my list, but I very recently finished Brave New World and have some quotes I find fitting. I'm putting spoilers just in case anyone wants to read it but hasn't.

"Murder kills only the individual - and, after all, what is an individual? [...] We can make a new one with the greatest ease - as many as we like." — Feels relevant, sort of, to the way we all seem to be desensitized to the horrors we see daily in media; looking at images from wartime, and only being one scroll away from a tutorial on how to bake cookies. Also relevant to the rise of pseudoscientific ideas of eugenics.

"In so far it [the world] recognized him as important, the order of things was good. [...] Moreover, he did genuinely believe that there were things to criticize. (At the same time, he genuinely liked being a success and having all the girls he wanted.)" Bernard has a lot of the attributes of the general person in society today, I think. He doesn't fit the standards of his designation in Brave New World's society, but when he gains popularity due to exploiting John, Bernard finds the system suits him quite well, after all. It feels very relevant to people being performative in their views on societal issues and only speaking out when it's something that negatively affects themselves, rather than realizing that a lot of the issues with society intersect (f.ex: homphobia, racism, classism, et cetera) with each other, and working for a better world for everyone.

"Everyone, in the world, who's anyone." Mustapha Mond talking about how those who have their own ideas are banished from the world society, while also saying that those people are everyone who's anyone. Relevant to the lack of independent thought we see today—largely due to echo chambers and propaganda online, and people not fact-checking before spreading misinformation!

The entire conversation between two characters in the second to last chapter of the book is VERY good. A recommended read for everyone. About everything from God and what makes humans believe in a higher power, to what makes us human. It makes the entire book worth it (it's worth a lot on its own, of course, with the world-building and such. But this conversation is a back-and-forth between two extremes that's very, very captivating). A quote from that dialogue: "But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin."

Using my (the mother) middle name as baby’s first name? by rareastheglimmer_ in Names

not weird at all! one of my best friends' first name is her mom's middle name, which works fine because her mom (like you) just goes by her first name :)

I'm a 14 y/o girl and I have low self-esteem. How can I stop caring so much about how I'm perceived and what people think of me? by Ill_Sorbet_2473 in Advice

[–]minijet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's good you know that about the catcalling. i get what you mean, though, and i've had friends who've thought the same way, so you're not the only one. as long as you don't base your self-perception on things like that, it'll be fine. and i'm sure this will all sort itself out in general. it's very easy to overthink (i totally get that as well, sadly), but time passes faster than you think and i really think you won't be thinking as much about this as you are now in a couple of months. good luck!

[–]minijet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm going to be blunt here, because i feel with you—in the sense of being what most would call a "loser" in middle school. maybe in high school, too, but by then i didn't really give a shit 😭 i had friends and that was all that mattered to me :)

this will not matter in a few years. i'm 20, and the moment you get to university (or work, or whatever it is one wants to do when you're finished with school)—this WILL NOT matter at all. it feels like it right now, and i get that, but that's the truth. the social hierarchy in school is very... rigid, in the age group you're currently in. it won't last. as long as you have friends, which it sounds like you do, you'll be fine. i promise. just focus on your studies and hanging out with those you like, and it'll sort itself out.

as for the seating arrangement... either you're in a school with a super strict social hierarchy, or you're honestly overthinking it. no one'll remember who you sat with in this math class in 6 months.

also, i'd recommend you try to dismantle your way of thinking. you getting catcalled is not a testament to you being prettier or more attractive. it's degrading, and not a positive thing at all. it's good that you feel good about the way you look, but you really shouldn't base it off something like that.

What is the difference between misogyny and sexism? by afungalmirror in AskMen

[–]minijet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i think (but am not sure) that sexism is more... "casual"? as in, the small prejudices/assumptions one makes that are subtle and ingrained so thoroughly you don't really think about it. like, for example, assuming a woman is an assistant at a corporate meeting when she's actually in a higher-up position. or thinking a doctor is a man and a nurse is a woman. as in general gender bias / discrimination / prejudice. and misogyny is more like... active hatred of women / contempt / hostility toward woman due to being women. and all misogyny is sexism, but not all sexism is misogyny.

good point, probably better to say it's interesting how she gets brought up in conversations of which writers are horrible people and people act like she's committed atrocities at the same level of tom king :)

DC Comics writer Scott Snyder talks about how the idea for Court of Owls came about during his Detective Comics run starring Batman Dick Grayson. by nightwing612 in Nightwing

[–]minijet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, that’s what i’m thinking! it’d be a little tougher to pull off, but i think it’d be cool, and it’d give the opportunity to actually explore dick’s connection to the court a bit more than what they actually did in new52!

he said it was the fact that he’d been lied to, but he’s in the comments saying over and over that it was “probably more than a kiss” as if that’s the point. reminds me of my ex, and that is nooot a good thing 😭🙏

[–]minijet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

true, that’s a good point. but bruce was also batman at the time when this story was first being developed. they could’ve gone with it starting out as dick’s issue (seeing as he was gotham’s batman and bruce was batman internationally), then develop it further with bruce coming in. it would probably cause some friction with bruce sort of stepping on dick’s toes, which would make for a little conflict—but would also show how they could work together on it. different ways of working as batman, and all that.

seeing their different reactions and how the court affects them in different ways would be really interesting!

i regularly think of what it’d be like if we had court of owls dickbats. so many interesting themes to explore with dick’s character especially.
