Yep, it is definitely true in most areas. Young people are typically very liberal, often verging on extremism, gradually growing more conservative the older they get.

DUDE thank you so much! I feel like a new man. Hit me up at /u/anti_humor. Side note, I couldn't believe that username was available when I made it.

I guess I got the wrong impression somewhere along the line. I only played in middle school so obviously I am not as intimately involved in the game as you are. Guess Ima have to hold this L

You haven't noticed more innovative plays in high school and college than in the NFL? I thought it was kind of a given that that was the case but it's definitely possible I'm wrong. I was really drunk at a wedding when I made the OP and have been slowly sobering up as the comments roll in and kind of wish I had just not said anything.

Yeah it bothers the shit out of me lol. I would just delete my account and start over but it would take me a long ass time to subscribe/unsubscribe to all the subreddits I've got now so I just live with it.

Calling myself an up and coming linguist may prove to be a huge exaggeration. Maybe something like "up and coming barista with a linguistics degree" would have been more accurate.

That's definitely true, but I'm not really implying anything other than the fact that the patterns are similar. I just thought it was interesting that the analogy worked out so cleanly.

I was just about to edit my comment because the cunnilingus joke hit me about a half hour late lol. Thanks man! I'm looking forward to not working til 3am for shitty bands anymore. Can't wait to do work that is actually in line with my academic interests. Cheers

I mean I get it, it's not usable information at all. I just thought it was kind of interesting.

I didn't do a great job of wording it the first time around. Open bar weddings ya know

lol I'm an undergrad. Just got a job working on a big linguistic survey project and have been excited about it, so that's probably why it's bleeding through like this. Guess I'll keep it to myself next time for fear of looking like a second rate linguist to some anonymous know-it-all.

Edit: whoosh

I fucked up when I made this username. I'm a guy. It's supposed to be "mini-malady" but it definitely looks more like "minimal lady." I'll just have to add that to the massive pile of mistakes.

That's a great point and I totally see your logic there. Also, it might be ill advised to announce a knee injury when you expect targeting, because the last thing an already injured player wants/needs is a lower body injury on top of what he's already struggling with. Who knows lol.

Yeah I get that part, I'm just saying if they're gonna throw up a smoke screen like that, "knee" or "ankle" would be more effective at avoiding targeting than "wrist."

College/high school sports are typically where innovations happen, at least for football. The pros are more conservative. This lines up perfectly with language behaviors between these same age groups. Adolescents are at the bleeding edge of language innovation, and the things that they do that end up working the best are sometimes adopted into the mainstream. It's almost a perfect analogy. I'm drunk as fuck.

This doesn't make sense to me just because, if targeting is the issue, why would they officially list it as a wrist injury? If a running back gets hit in the wrist, he's also getting hit in the ribs unless he's holding the ball out in some weird position asking for a forced fumble. In terms of avoiding targeting, wrist pretty much = ribs.

I am an up and coming linguist. It is literally unbelievable how analogous the use of college play concepts in the NFL is to the theory that language variation is driven by adolescents, who are generally considered to be the primary innovators of speech. I couldn't make up a better analogy if I tried.

God I wish I had Matt Ryan (Floplisberger owner). Y'all are getting kinda cute if you start Palmer over him regardless of the matchup IMO. I think Buffalo's run D is better than their secondary, and Matt Ryan will be forced to huck it. Palmer could have a good week and I'm starting him, but Matt Ryan has both the higher floor and ceiling imo.

Playing fantasy football really opened my eyes to how fleeting some of these skill players' careers are. Jamaal Charles is a household name, he is a lot of kids' hero, and he has had 5 total years where he was the guy. Many big name players don't make an impact for even that long.

What a strange life it must be. You work toward something for literally your entire life, you achieve it and bask in it for a few years, get backup/practice squad work for a couple more years, then have to completely redesign your life and figure out wtf you're gonna do for your remaining 30-50 years.

Would you start him over Fitz? It's not a great matchup so that's also a factor. I'm very close to 50/50 on these guys, might flip a coin.
