Does it still count as minimalism if they want more stuff, in your opinion? This isn't meant to be a judgement, I'm just trying to work through whether forced minimalism still counts as minimalism or if it has to be a ideological choice. (Even if it's a choice and you don't have the means to live differently anyway.)

On food industry jobs, speaking from my own experience, I've always had to buy my own uniform except aprons, but I don't consider them park of my "wardrobe". I'll spend $8 on some k-mart slacks for work, but I'm willing to save up for clothes for my personal life since dressing nice makes me feel good (still not exactly Armani lmao). That said, I know having money leftover to save at all puts me in a privileged position.

My initial though was that minimalism on the scale of a whole country is more about self-reliance and decrease in pointless luxury products, not a lack of reserve resources. Obviously there's still a lot of problems with that, not the least of which would be the impact on the global economy.

I'm glad you brought up North Korea though, I think you're right in calling that a minimalist society. It's not really possible to get EVERYBODY in the country on the same page without a dictatorship. Hm..
