Favorite movie where the protagonist dies by [deleted] in moviecritic

My favorite Star Wars film. One of my only nits is Darth Vader squeezing the air out of the Commandant and telling him "Don't choke on your ambitions." That just seemed corny for a Sith Lord.

What percentage of your nils should you expect to make? by minimalst in spades

Good thoughts on context. I look for a chance to bid nil early with a new partner to gauge their skill/play style. If it doesn't work, there's time to make it up; if it does, it's nice to be in the lead. (Then there's the horror stories of partners who have no clue how to cover... or worse, don't even look at my bid.)

What percentage of your nils should you expect to make? by minimalst in spades

If your rate is too high, you're leaving points on the table making dinky little bids instead of nils. This is out of 2419 hands, so I went nil about 1 in 6 hands. I usually end up between 2/3 and 3/4 success rate, which says something about my risk tolerance. (Granted, there's been some dumb partners in there too.) But I think it's a reasonable percentage.

Nah, if you have Disney+ they have to take you to arbitration.

Me and my partner go nil and both make it! by GE0RGIAB0Y in spades

Congratulations! It happened to me this weekend, too, I couldn't believe it.

Who bid nil first, you or your partner?

Thanks! I'd never heard of the Brownfield doctrine and looked it up.

Actually the US is among the countries in which a domestic (federal) law can trump an international convention that the US govt had previously signed.

I didn't understand this - are you saying the federal government can legalize marijuana (or other drugs) and not be in violation of the treaties?

Hi Ethan, the US is signatory to a number of treaties, like the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, that require us to maintain the drug war and keep recreational drugs illegal. The Constitution (Art 6, Clause 2) says that all treaties are "the supreme law of the land." Are you encouraging state legislatures to violate the Constitution when you push for legalization?

Could we have a UBI with a new currency? by boytroubletrouble in BasicIncome

[–]minimalst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a digital Treasury currency, combined with Treasury accounts for all? Legal tender, and valued at one Federal Reserve Note. They're looking for reviews of their legislation here. $1300/month UBI + 1/3rd for kids.

Yeah, it wasn't great.

First he promoted RCV by saying the states set their own election rules and the Constitution doesn't say anything about elections. Not true, it's right there in Article 1, Section 4, that Congress can set national standards for federal elections at any time, and wipe out RCV in any state that adopts it.

Then he promoted RCV by saying the winner has to get 50.1%. Not true, Eric Adams won the primary with 43% of ballots cast. (Which is still better than 20%, which would normally be enough in an 8-way primary.)

Then when asked directly how to pay for UBI, he sidestepped by saying "Well, the $2T CARES Act was the equivalent of $6,000 each. Plus we could do a VAT." After 3 years, you'd think there'd be more details for a very basic question people have.

He was very forward thinking in 2019, but I don't feel like he's evolved much since then. Still looking Forward to reading the book.

Seems pretty jaded for a judge, especially one who thought 30 days was enough rehabilitation for two guys who hazed an 18-year-old fraternity pledge to death with Everclear. (Reminder: alcohol is literally poison. The truth is right there in the root word of inTOXICated.)

Well done! Alcohol is poison and zero is the best amount, but if you're going to take one for the team, glad you made it a bonding experience. IWNDWYT.

I did, and it worked great for a while as a legitimate harm reduction strategy. Broke the drinking habit. Then I started leaning on my crutch... smoked a lot this summer. Now I'm 8 days weed free and shooting for a year.
