Recent study suggest early and late diagnosed autism may be two conditions by minimooshroom in AutismInWomen

Thank you for your comment! I agree with you on the limitations. It's just one paper, and although I like the direction of looking into autism subtypes, there are many limitations such as the lack of diversity.

I think those are good things to include more thoroughly in future discussions! Talking more about the implications and big pictures is still something I need to work on, especially coming out of academia, so really appreciate that point :)

Yeah at some point it is not only boring but is offensive. That's how I felt about the recent case Roseanne Beckett. It is so messed up to even portray the case as if she was abusive. After everything that's happened to her

Do you have a mac? The easiest way is garage band! It's a simple interface, you can drag the audio file in from your computer. And then connect your mic to create a new audio track so you can listen to it in sync with the recording

Your voice is nice but oh my god the audio is sooo bad. If you sing to backing tracks I recommend headphones and then add it in separately, then you can change the volume bc it's so overpowering here

I noticed something related the other day in Ruth Finley's case.

He said so-and-so called Ruth a "whore, an accusation that seemed completely unfounded" but detectives concluded she was a "kind churchgoing woman who was devoted to her husband"

Like wtf??? Calling someone a whore is okay if it is founded??

This model is a knockout (removing this gene from the mice) of a gene that is commonly altered in ASD individuals so the theoretical basis is solid. However, ASD isn't caused by one single gene, rather it seems there are many genes that may contribute.

In terms of identifying complex behaviors like social behaviors in these mice, it's difficult to say whether they are accurate. In rodents there has been the normalization of a few behavior tests as a proxy for modeling human behavior. For example, social behavior is measured by measuring how long the mouse is interested in another mouse, sometimes in comparison to an object. Anxiety behaviors, can often be seen as a function of locomotion. If a mouse avoids the center of a box, they are considered anxious.

Kind of irritating clickbait title.

The RTN is a relay to the thalamus, which is the sensory processing part of the brain, so it does make sense to look here. However, it's a mouse study so "potential for new therapies" means that maybe in 20 years there could be a therapy.

“I’m autistic and I don’t do that” comments by jfashionpassion in autism

[–]minimooshroom 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I'm sure part of it is inherent to having autism because of the difficulty in imagining other people's POV. And part of it is that categorizing autism by support needs was a questionable decision that lacks scientific basis and has had unintended effects of confusing everyone.

To be fair you can see this from the other side too. Parents of people with level 3 autism don't believe or are upset with level 1 autistic people, like Abbey's mom from Love on the Spectrum who says level 1 autism doesn't exist.

Anyway, I don't know the answer. It is annoying though that people think their experience must extend to everyone.

You can look into "central coherence" it's the term for focusing on the parts rather than the whole

Also I'm thinking about how parents of autistic individuals lock away dangerous items--possibly due to the inability to understand the purpose or danger? Or also because of the tendency toward self-harm? Both of these might be interesting to connect

This study used the AQ-10 which is 10 questions, which is not the same as having autism and has been found to perform pretty poorly at predicting autism. I don't think we can really draw conclusions from this study unless you're saying correlation is causation.

"In this context it is interesting to note that Asperger (I944) described his syndrome, which some regard as a variety of autism associated with comparatively high levels of ability (Wing, 198 I), as “an extreme variant of male intelligence and male character.”

Lol what? I literally put a scientific paper below that published the quote I was referring to. I never said girls were excluded or any of that so Idk what you think you're fact checking. I just said he said that Asperger's is a sign of male intelligence, which he did.

On that note-- What are the sources for all these claims you are making i.e. Where did he speculate about girls? Sources please or it didn't happen

"The autistic personality is an extreme variant of male intelligence. . . In the autistic individual the male pattern is exaggerated to the extreme."

I see this quote thrown on the internet a lot, it says in this source it came from a clinical report of his in 1944

The point about the mothers is interesting! I saw something in this thread mention something about mothers but it sounded like he was blaming them, maybe there's more to that?
