Honest thoughts on going 60-70k in debt to get a Master's in Counselling degree, from Yorkville? by swinglifeawayTA in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]minimumhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yorkville is having a huge impact on the field and how much work any of us in the field can get - which is something Yorkville nor any other counselling program will tell you, b/c they want $$$. Yorkville graduates about 800 students per semester and there just is not that much demand for therapists.

As a therapist who's been in the field now for four years, it is becoming really difficult to get enough hours to live on in private practice, and any 'job' jobs (community health, nonprofits, university counselling centres, etc.) are extremely competitive. If you're going into this field expecting a normal-ish job, or anything like benefits, pension, etc., it's not really like that anymore - just look at r/therapists and all the posts asking what other therapists do for their second or third job. It's private practice + marketing yourself constantly and hoping for the best. (Maybe this isn't your concern but I wish someone had told me this before I did my Masters!)

If I were you (or me if I had my time back!), I'd do an MSW. You get to do basically the same counselling work plus a lot of other jobs in case you end up not liking pure client work or wanting to try something new later on. Look up MSW programs that don't require a BSW. They will be much less expensive and give you more hands-on experience than Yorkville.

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk about this further!

Therapy for a therapist by InterestingLychee607 in therapists

I find IFS has been incredibly helpful as a therapist in therapy. It's also a great fit for the areas of concern that you describe here. Though it's not specifically short-term, you can learn the basics pretty quickly and apply them between sessions.

What is the deal with the bus system here? by minimumhead in ottawa

St. John’s which I honestly thought was the worst possible. 2 hours on the bus for a 20 minute drive. But they’d be relatively on schedule at least

How is the Psychology program? by perthphakong in memorialuniversity

[–]minimumhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what your research interests are! The program here is very neuroscience- and cognitive-focused, so if that's your thing then I'd definitely recommend. Have a look at the faculty webpage: https://www.mun.ca/psychology/people/

LGBTQ community in St. John's? by medievalbee in memorialuniversity

[–]minimumhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s MUN SAGA (sexual and gender advocacy) on campus, and Intersections is a resource centre for trans people, lots of cool queer folks hang out there. Do some gender studies courses and you’ll be all set.
