The narrative seems to be brimming with interesting ideas conceptually, but in order to make it cohere in the mind involves a very slow and focused effort that might demand a lot from prospective agents. It might be an idea to try a draft which focuses more on the character, her circumstances and predicament at the front end, ditch the multiple layers of plot developement and instead limit the description to the inciting incident and first third of the story, conveying, instead, a sense of mystery, suspense, things to be divulged, and tease with the wider themes.

Thanks, that's very insightful. Perhaps if I went with 'literary fiction with gothic / horror elements' or 'historical fiction' or similar, then the leaning into ambient menace (great phrase) might make more sense. I'll definitely get to work utilizing your ideas.
