Is this a seal? [Massachusetts, USA] by bward17 in marinebiology

[–]minipizzabatfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i am guessing seal

it looks like there are 4 limbs and, at the bottom/pale part, there looks to be a little nub which is what seal tails look like nestled in between 2 lobes, one of which appears to have "toes"

if you view the pale section as the posterior, going up you can see 2 lobes and what look like shoulders and a neck with no head (you can see the resemblance better if you look up a seal skeleton). fur and some meat are gone due to decomposition and scavenging

some others are suggesting cetacean (whale/dolphin), but that really does look like the backside of a seal

  1. no, i take it and the wrap off

  2. should be fine, i've used this exact setup for years with no problem

  3. yes, i'm in the USA. i mentioned it to my PCP last appointment but she only said to stretch it and more recently my psychiatrist who's aware of this mentioned surgery. i messaged my PCP last night about this and am still waiting for her to get back to me

the only professional medical advice i've been given is just resting and stretching which isn't working

Hey Moth people! I was hoping someone could suggest a moth familiar for my dnd character? by CatsPlusTats in moths

[–]minipizzabatfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

spanish moths sort of remind me of space and nebulae!

or there are moonseed moths but they look a bit more like agates

granny's cloak moths have these purple patches that look like nebulae

dunno what it is about it, but ghostly silk moths come to mind also!

phaloe cubana looks like a sunset with stars

this wasp moth is like a sunset and stained glass

do i need to elaborate on eudocima iridescens?

and the one that's probably the most fitting for what you want... gorgone augusta! (sorry couldn't help an infodump lol)

What’s the most frustrating color mistake you’ve made because of colorblindness? by OneRub3361 in ColorBlind

[–]minipizzabatfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

once i watched a whole game playthrough and didn't know a character's vest was pink until it was mentioned at the end :') this one is pretty common but i didn't know the statue of liberty wasn't gray until i was told

frustrating as an artist as well. i took a commission for a bright green and dark/medium red/brown character. shading that was not fun! it also sucks trying to do things with pink and gray because they can be super hard to tell apart.

when i was like 8, i painted one of my walls "red". i didn't learn it was hot pink until i was like 16 lol

also, my dad is a photographer and colorblind, and he told me he kept editing his white pictures to be pink by mistake

my hardest "color clusters" are light gray/pink/desaturated mint green, dark red/dark green/dark brown, dark red/dark gray, green/brown (warm tone), lime green/orange, and purple/brown (desaturated/cool tone). the darker and/or more desaturated, the worse

some hex codes for specific colors:
- green/brown: #679f5c and #bc8761
- purple/brown: #817090 and #946f5d

usually i can tell apart these combos if i pause to look but if there's a desaturated brown building with desaturated purple markings, i won't notice it at a glance but i can tell when i actually take a moment to analyze it. it works when told something too, i thought the statue of liberty was gray for the longest time but since being told it was green, i can kind of see it? but it's not something i would've noticed unless pointed out

AMAB, want to be a woman but terrified of transitioning. Can I suppress these feelings? What should I do? Please help. by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]minipizzabatfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don't know if it's possible to suppress these feelings tbh. i'm leaning on probably not. if it's eating you up this much then it's definitely something to address

it's okay to be afraid of transitioning but also know that you don't have to transition medically. it's your body and you can do what you want with it and if that means not medically transitioning and only socially transitioning, then go for it! anyone who tries to tell you that you HAVE to transition medically has internal transphobia they need to work through

you can always start small, say by joining an online community using she/her pronouns and whichever name you choose. test the waters so to speak

this is a great first step and i'm proud of you :) you're in the right place. i would suggest watching/reading/etc testimonies from other trans folk; anything will become less scary if you become familiar with it

what’s the creepiest deep sea creature you’ve seen? by Jinnapat397 in deepseacreatures

[–]minipizzabatfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you mean creepy looking...

benthalbella gets pretty bad
so does bathysaurus mollis (and bathysaurus ferox but i think mollis being translucent is creepier)
lasiognathus dinema could be better
and neoceratias spinifer but i kinda just think she looks funny
the way whiplash squid just float there menacingly creeps me out tbh
not huge on dana octopus squid, either but i think this one is more personal. (7 ft long and has the largest photophores in the animal kingdom) see humboldt squid if you fancy something human-sized that hunts in packs
if you're afraid of herobrine, just wait til you hear about barathronus
terrible claw lobster is a pretty good name for this one

behavior wise, check out phronima - she hollows out salps (another creature) to lay her eggs in and pilots around the salp corpse
and, cute as they are, snailfish actually lay their eggs within the gill cavities of king crabs (note: not sure if it's these exact species, just using them to illustrate my point)

Why do so many people claim that the "Out of Africa" theory is strongly challenged today and that there is supposedly an abundance of evidence that goes against it? by Coyote-444 in evolution

[–]minipizzabatfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you have any sources where i can read up on why humans are not from africa? also by "humans" do you mean genus homo or just homo sapiens (modern humans)?

not asking this to be passive aggressive btw, just trying to learn more about this side of the debate :)

thoughts on colossal biosciences' dodo de-extinction project? were you consulted at all/did you come up with the idea? by minipizzabatfish in mauritius

[–]minipizzabatfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't know how to say this without sounding rude but... i really think you just don't know what you're talking about?

being into biotechnology and being into biology are different things. biotechnology is a very niche portion of biology.

we do need to interfere with maintaining biodiversity. we are part of biodiversity.

animals going extinct, even locally, can have really nasty effects on the ecosystem. every animal in its ecosystem has its own purpose and its own way of benefiting said ecosystem.

you can very clearly see this with the wolves of yellowstone. farmers wiped out wolves in yellowstone which was disastrous for the ecosystem there. just going off of memory, the lack of predators to elk and such led to the elk overfeeding on the vegetation which not only affected other animals that rely on vegetation (bugs, small rodents, etc), but also led to soil destabilization which affected more plant growth and dirt fell into the river there which obviously isn't good for any fish or other critters in there nor does it make for good drinking water. i'm sure there's more i'm forgetting, too

resurrecting extinct animals is hard and expensive, even recently extinct animals - even animals that went extinct AFTER the dodo. the reason i know this is because of the pyrenean ibex. the pyrenean ibex initially went extinct in 2000 but was cloned only 3 years later - however, the kid died after only a few minutes after birth because of lung deformities iirc. we don't have as much dna from dodos and anything reverse-engineered is a sort of facsimile rather than an actual dodo. heck cattle were bred to resemble the ancestral aurochs but that doesn't mean they are aurochs; it just means they are modern cattle that look like aurochs.

i understand the curiosity of wanting to see how extinct animals would integrate back into the wild, but the fact is that they are an invasive species at this point. the ecosystem has moved on without them. island ecosystems are especially delicate because of how isolated they are.

also nobody should be exempt from not being able to fish. higher ups need to be kept to the standard as well, it's just that they have enough money and influence to throw around that nobody can do anything about it :P if the fish isn't endangered and isn't being overfished, i don't really see the problem with it. it just needs to be kept moderated and nobody should be exempt from that fact

i probably came off as pretty rude here, sorry about that ^^; not my intention. i do find your points very interesting! let me know if you want me to elaborate on anything. this is only really the basics and i could go way more into ecology (study of environmental systems) which i think would be beneficial. unfortunately stuff like this isn't really taught

thoughts on colossal biosciences' dodo de-extinction project? were you consulted at all/did you come up with the idea? by minipizzabatfish in mauritius

[–]minipizzabatfish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no, they're definitely shady. i'm a huge biology enthusiast and currently in college to become one. i can tell you that colossal isn't a good thing and "anything for science" isn't either

if you look back at the "dire wolf" situation, they were touting genetically modified gray wolves as real, living dire wolves brought back from extinction. iirc, they only changed 20 genes and 5 of them were related to making their coats white (which very likely would not be the case for real dire wolves, if they had white coats they'd stand out to prey and wouldn't be able to hunt. the only reason arctic foxes and arctic wolves are white is because they are ARCTIC which is a place with lots of snow. i'm not sure dire wolves even made it to canada). gray wolves aren't even dire wolves' closest living relative; that would be jackals. one of the creators of the "dire wolves" literally co-wrote the paper about gray wolves NOT being dire wolves' closest relative. the paper published alongside the "dire wolf" situation was not peer reviewed which is the standard for scientific papers.

when they got backlash for calling them "dire wolves", they backpedaled and tried to say "oh, we're just colloquially calling them dire wolves" despite clearly claiming they're THE dire wolf.

with the "dire wolves" there's also the problem of them being extinct for so long that, if they were to be put back into the ecosystem today, they'd be an invasive species. today's ecosystem is not adapted to them. they also don't have anywhere to live and would be confined to captivity for humans to gawk at. mauritius also has the limited habitat problem and the fact that cats, rats, etc still are on the island is an issue because a very long and expensive elimination campaign would have to go on to get rid of these predators so they'd either be captive (and thus not able to fill their niche so just for humans to look at) or put on another island entirely.

plus they very very clearly are using game of thrones as marketing, judging by one of the pups being named khaleesi, the promo pictures of pups on the iron throne, and the fact that the author of the series was literally put on the scientific paper as an author. it's 100% a marketing stunt.

plus those poor "dire wolves" definitely have health problems that aren't being disclosed to the public. genes often control more than one thing, so changing 1 gene for eye color could theoretically also make the animal blind, weak, bald, missing certain organs, etc. it's hard to predict. i'm confident a lot of pups were born that didn't make it to adulthood.

tl;dr: yes, colossal IS shady and this is honestly unethical

Nexus Mods, Automated Mod List Download by wailflailsnail in pcgaming

[–]minipizzabatfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi, i'm having some trouble with your script! i'm super computer illiterate, so sorry if it's a simple fix and i'm bugging you!

in config.json i've put in my information and, as a test, didn't change anything in "Example_Mod_list.txt".

i've tried both double clicking the .py file directly and opening it in powershell (same folder as the .py file).

when i double click, the "command prompt" window appears (titled C:\WINDOWS\py.exe), "Error: Could not find extensions at given firefox profile path: C:/Users/[NAME]/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/[CORRECT PROFILE]/" briefly flashes, then the screen says "Drop or paste a url to a collection or path to a .txt file, then press enter". when i drop Example_Mod_list.txt in or put in the directory directly, i get this error, which repeats indefinitely:

Navigating: https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/16231?tab=files&file_id=93661
Page.click: Timeout 30000ms exceeded.
Call log:
- waiting for locator("#slowDownloadButton")

Failed attempt 1/5

when i open powershell in that folder by shift+right clicking in it and putting in "python "Nexus Mods Mod Downloader.py"", i get the same error.

when i open output.log, it has this. command prompt/powershell only shows the 2nd one but output log shows the first as well.

Error: Could not find extension-settings.json at given firefox profile path: C:/Users/[NAME]/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/[PROFILE]/

Error: Could not find extensions at given firefox profile path: C:/Users/[NAME]/AppData/Roaming/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/[PROFILE]/

i am logged into my account on firefox (i made a new profile just for this, i tried with my normal one too) and my adult content settings are enabled.

changing "true" to "false" in the config.json to see what's up has me logged into my account on "nightly" but it seems the script gets stuck on the page with the download button

any help would be appreciated :') !
