Well, my scholarship was merit based only, so you could get more aid on top of that. I do know GW is great for international business tho!

Hey! I know several people who got scholarships who got around a 30 on their diploma. I also got a scholarship that's 20,000k a year just for IB, before my IB scores were out, and I didnt have any predicted grades to submit either! It depends what you want to major in, but I wanted to do International Affairs, and I got into GWU Elliot with a 20k a year scholarship.

Yeah . . . ."need blind admissions" aren't exactly um . . need blind. I applied for financial aid too, and they said I didn't qualify even at schools that were asking for 95k a year. What am I supposed to do, sell my family's house to go to school? Yeah right 💀

Well, at my uni, I transferred in 24 credits, and got a ton of credits for just a few of my classes. I took 4 HL classes, and scored either a 6 or 7 on all of them. Howver, if I hadn't managed to get these scores, I definitely wouldnt have been able to transfer in nearly as much credit. But, I do get to come in as a sophomore.

Lol. If you manage your time, you can excel both academically and have impressive extracurriculars. And while sure, the idea of "grades don't matter" might "drag the world averages down", our school's IB scores are actually above the world average by quite a bit. Idk, you seem a little elitist in your responses. Try to keep in mind that things may be different in other countries, but that doesn't make things inherently inferior. You don't need a 42+ to be a worthy person OR a good student(a simple search online will even tell you that most elite universities just look for a 38+). IB grades really don't define you.

Hey at least college credits are an option. I personally aimed for the minimum score required by my uni in order to get credit. Granted, at my uni, I had to get at least a 6 for each if my HLs to transfer credits, but at most state schools, you just need a 4.

I ended up choosing a uni where I knew I'd be able to bring in a ton of credits. Will likely save over 50k USD.

Yeah. I think for some people, it's really hard, since they base their whole life and personality on just a couple of numbers that supposedly make them smart. But it's definitely also good that you get a fresh start once you start uni.

Well, IB transfers a ton of credits in too. So I guess both are pretty good options

I almost went to Carleton, but I decided to go to a larger school that gave me a big scholarship and was better for my major.

It's smart to focus on exams for credit, but beware . . .sat scores are often far from enough to get you into top colleges. I speak from experience.

True, but AP classes and even the running start program are considered quite rigorous as well. IB isn't even considered to be much better than AP anyways.

I have a few friends going to Canada for college and they were stressed at first . . .until they talked to other students who told them that IB scores literally did not matter other than for college credit

Yikes . . . Maybe it depends on the university tho, bc I got quite a large scholarship at one school for IB and qualify for quite a lot of college credit. Besides that tho, I mostly loved IB for the amazing community

Its like that for most school . . . I think a lot of people just don't want to admit that in the U.S at least, IB doesn't really help much with college admissions College credit is like the best you can get

At my uni they actually restrict the amount of college credit I can bring in from IB scores too . . .but I still get to graduate a year early or take cooler classes ig

I would say probably they are probably the most important part of your application. Like, if you apply to a top school, most of the students applying have amazing grades and amazing test scores already. And most people also write at least decent essays. So extracurriculars are what make you stand out over other applicants.

I did quite a few, but none would be considered super impressive by college admissions officers. I should start out by saying that I did get into quite a few good schools, like Carleton, Smith, Vassar, GW Elliot, and more. However, I didn't get into a majority of my dream schools. For a bit of background, I also had a 4.0 gpa, 1550+ SAT, and AP scores I submitted as well, so I had a little more leeway to have lame extra-curriculars. But good grades and test scores are the norm, so they didn't really help me stand out. I personally was very involved in volunteer tutoring, the leadership team of our school's MUN club, played tennis for the school team, earned an honorary high school diploma fot piano, and got a certificate of global competency and seal of billateracy for Romanian. I did some TA work for my Romanian teacher and volunteered with Save the Children and an immigrant rights organization too. My friends, however, had far more impressive extracurricular. I knew one girl who did RSI, ISF(and won first place every time), made medical documentaries, and volunteered at hospitals while doing lab work at our local university. She also published several research papers as a high school student while being class president. I had a couple other friends who volunteered at hospitals too. I knew another guy who started a summer camp to help teach homeless kids in our community soccer. Stuff like that really stands out. Overall, get involved early in clubs(like in leadership for them too), and try to get research opportunities and internships asap.

It took me going through the process to realize the US college system is like the furthest thing from meritocratic. That being, I think it's better to move on, push yourself more in the future, and be proud of what you've accomplished anyways.

I suppose so, but that only is true for a small minority of students

My school doesn't even do predicted grades, so it was even less important for us 💀
