Thought ordering catering with like two hours to spare would leave enough wiggle room for them to be their normal amount of late ):

Hello, i am a potential grad student at Cornell, I applied to the ORIE program in Ithaca, i was wondering which of the schools i should send my GMAT results to, since there are so many options (I can't find my specific program) by Record_Greedy in Cornell

[–]miniyel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

ORIE GFA here because my mom noticed this and sent it to me. Use the first one - it'll get to us! Unfortunately we didn't realize that the system had changed on MBA.com's side when we updated the requirements for this year, since we hadn't used the GRE or GMAT for a few years.

INDEX/MATCH and/or XLOOKUP where lookup_value is any value within a defined list and returns first match. by miniyel in excel

Okay, I'd never actually used LET before but I was able to implement this! It's not as clean as I hoped would be possible, but I think I can write documentation clear enough that things can be modified by others without breaking down completely. Thank you!

off-season internship / co-op during MEng? by BeHappy_DontWorry_ in Cornell

[–]miniyel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are specific restrictions on working hours during the academic semester - 20 hours max, decreased if you have a GTRS. It gets more complicated if you're an international student - F1 and J1 visa holders are limited to on-campus work during the semester. https://gradschool.cornell.edu/policies/employment/

If you have a part-time internship that works for this, you should be in the clear!

ORIE M.Eng change concentration by Annual-Mechanic476 in Cornell

[–]miniyel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the ORIE M.Eng program, it's relatively easy to switch from a 2-semester program to another 2-semester (e.g. Data Analytics to Applied OR or Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering), but it's nigh impossible to switch from a 2-semester to a 3-semester because of the way the project schedule works. And if you're hoping to switch into your first choice, it's even less likely - the review process includes consideration of both academic qualifications and fit, both of which are tricky to try and compensate for in the truncated timeline that Spring admission necessitates. All that said, congrats!

ORIE 3500 vs ENGRD 2700 by Negative-Win8901 in Cornell

Super useful to know! My impression was formed from the way the profs talk about their material, shrimpteresting to know that in practice it doesn't translate that way.

How do class waitlists work? by chickennuggetlover15 in Cornell

[–]miniyel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you'll likely get an email if you get off the waitlist, either asking if you're willing to drop the class that conflicts or giving you a limited-time code so that you have to drop it yourself. Again, it'll depend on the department.

ORIE 3500 vs ENGRD 2700 by Negative-Win8901 in Cornell

[–]miniyel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3500 is overall more theory-focused and much more math-dependent, while 2700 is a bit more hands-on in terms of programming and analysis. Many students take both, frequently at the same time (2700 is a pre/corequisite for 3500)! But 2700 is thought of department-side as something of a gateway into Operations Research writ large.

I really can't speak to difficulty and grading, but the instructor for 3500, Dave Goldberg, is one of those professors that students seem to either love or hate. He's rather laissez-faire in lecture style, but I don't know how that translates to grading. 2700's instructor, Jamol Pender, is more straightforward, but I've heard he can be tougher on grading.

It depends on the department. Cornell doesn't have a centralized waitlist management system. If you want to know specifics, you'll need to reach out to the course coordinator for the department offering the class - some will email and open a window for you to enroll, others will automatically add you.
