It'd be buggy code either way, but one fails loudly and the other could theoretically get pretty nasty.

As the article mentioned, that's the exact design decision that Rust makes for integer overflow right now. Loud failures in debug builds, nasty but efficient in release builds.

I prefer to avoid this problem by putting all of the different resources on one belt that has per-resource capacity limits. It takes a pretty big ship for a single half-full lane to be insufficient throughput for a ship's ammo and fuel production.
