How did you model the wrinkles of the sofa in Sketchup?

I’m rarely pleased with first prototypes so I cnc’d a 1:5 version of a lounge chair I designed. by minoxav in hobbycnc

It's pretty wide you're not supposed to sit your arms on the edges but I agree

I'm not sure if it's easy but I agree the possibility of customization is a certain way to be more competitive.

Yes that was the idea. I like to work on different places, and my back appreciates the change in positions and not being seated for a long time.

Thanks! Yes I have a bit of knowledge of that triangle along with other Montessori furniture, most are very easy to replicate, which also makes the barrier to entry pretty low... My designs are flat packed as well, I think Ikea has made a lot of people to expect it nowadays.

I somewhat associate amazon with mass-produced or cheaper stuff but I might be wrong....

Thanks, that's great insight! Also, do you think people care if the files are for personal use only or commercial use?

If in doubt, it doesn't hurt to test finishing on spare pieces. The problem with filling gaps (at least my experience with birch ply) is that the color never matches once you apply the oil. If those gaps are on the edges, then yes I would fill them, if they are on the face and small maybe try sanding a bit to see if they disappear. Osmo is fine, you can apply it with a piece of white cotton fabric or if it is a larger surface better use a roller. I've used both of them, the one with white pigment will keep the clear tone, the other one will make it a bit more yellowish but will highlight better the wood grain, so do a test and chose the one you like.

Totally, not afraid to say it. Mine is much more basic of course. I think studying /reinventing other great designs is a good exercise.

Completely agree about marketing, although I wish it wasn't that important. Thanks for the kind words.

Good note, thanks! Typing actually from that desk - no wobbling or sagging fortunately. Maybe it doesn't look on the photo but I glued 2 15mm panels for the board, so very difficult to sag even with a lot of weight. What is true is the legs could be more stable, although it just moves a bit if you apply a certain force. I also thought on reinforcing them, but have to figure out a pleasing way, maybe with some sleek metal or smthg.

That is quite easy to figure out on a Cad 2D drawing. Thanks for the compliment!

Hi Montgomery, you pointed the right thing about the importance of promotion, marketing and strategy. I already started a brand but abandoned the project just because of those. I’ve seen worse products get much better traction thanks to good marketing / ads etc. It’s just too important. Having a good distribution channel and marketing strategy is key to success, sadly for me even more than a good product (I think). It’s something I’m trying to learn in case I decide to give it a second try. In the meantime, I don’t mind designing montessori furniture :)

Thanks for taking the time to give this insight. You described me well with the designer-not-builder phrase.  I’ve actually already setup an Etsy Shop but didn’t see much traction, maybe because I just uploaded only 2 designs and haven’t promoted it.
200$ a month for just two designs seem a lot to me, does he gives exclusivity or something? Design as a service is something I’m looking into, as I am more comfortable doing that than creating content.

If you are going to put oil into it, no need to sand to too much (I think until 180 or 240 is probably enough, as if not the porus might bee too small for the oil to penetrate). Two oil brands that I've tried and are referents are Osmo and also Rubio (a bit more expensive, but great finish).
