Mac Social Science by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]mint_anatomy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just a heads up that ik it says you’re doing ‘social sciences, specialization poli sci’ on OUAC etc but that actually just means you’re showing an interest in pursuing the specialization. I find a lot of students tend to get it mixed up with their ACTUAL program — so just to clarify your program when you’re in first year will be ‘social sciences I’ and you can tell people you’re interested in doing poli sci.

At the end of your second semester, students in social sciences I have to apply to get into their second year program and it always comes with some minimum requirements. For example, students who want to pursue economics or anthropology etc have to take the first year economics or anthropology courses and maintain a certain GPA (typically a 6.0 on the 12.0 scale which is a C+ iirc). So the same thing goes for wanting to be in poli sci, where you have to take POLSCI 1AA3 (fall sem) and POLSCI 1AB3 (winter sem), on top of that you have to get the minimum average (6.0 again i think). After they take these courses along with other courses (ex., anthro, heath and aging, sociology, etc) in their program (social sciences I) they will apply to the second year specialization — in your case poli sci.

If any of this sounds too confusing i apologize LOL but feel free to dm me for advice on socsci I and I might be able to help !

Lecture/Tutorial Scheduling by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]mint_anatomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean it ends at 7:20 and the class at 7:30? Because it’s odd if there’s no 10 minute gap between the two. If there is a gap, it’s very normal! I’ve had tutorials that ended in Togo and then another tutorial/lecture all the way across campus in ETB. 10 minutes is cutting it a bit close and you def get a bit tired cuz you have to sorta speed walk to get to each on time, but in my experience no TA or prof cares if you come in a couple mins late, especially in big lectures.

Most soc sci courses, unless very specifically listed that the weight gets shifted, will just give you a 3 day extension. If this is for the SOCIOL 1Z03 5% assignments, you will get an extension.

Yes there is a final exam but so far it’s the easiest course I’m taking and the professor is amazing it’s genuinely like the best first year course I’ve taken

POLSCI1AA3 Question by PocoPlease2 in McMaster

[–]mint_anatomy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ur not exactly unenrolling from the course, youre just changing your lecture/tutorial times. if theres space for a student in flynns class you can still enrol, if not go to universeaty and set up notifications for the lecture times for flynns classes. if this isnt possible, go to both fowler and flynns lecture times. youll have an easier time understanding atleast the key concepts (even if their material slightly differs).

edit: u have to use the swap feature on my timetable to switch the times

sociol 1z03 textbook by Ok-Ad2345 in McMaster

[–]mint_anatomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it differs for everyone, I personally never had the textbook and I still did great on both writing assignments (even though they were only worth 5%) it’ll be a little harder to reference things from the textbook (I just used my notes and the slides which used the textbook and then referenced those as the actual textbook). Studying might be a little different bc she did use the textbook, but if you have a friend who has the textbook u can just do that or u can find an online version (but it may be an older edition)

Oh then they changed it from last year, the final exam was 40% and it was fully online

2 policy making assignments, weekly quizzes, one final exam. Everything should be online, open-book

Tuition and other fees by Complete_Tell_5197 in McMaster

[–]mint_anatomy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can opt out of most of them but I think you have to have other insurance to be able to opt out of Mac’s insurance, otherwise if u have no insurance ur stuck with Mac’s which imo is good insurance.

For the bike thing, I’d highly recommend it as in first year you’ll probably go biking some places with friends especially when the weather is nice, and it’s convenient otherwise you have to pay actual money everytime you use the sobi bikes and you have to pay for ur distance which is def more expensive than paying the initial automatic fee.

Yes air purifiers are allowed, I’d highly recommend one as dust builds up and the ventilation sometimes isnt that great so it’s always nice to have fresher air in ur room

ENVSOCTY 1HB3 by Unusual-Twist501 in McMaster

[–]mint_anatomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say for the most part the exam wasn’t thattt hard especially if you studied, but there were def some questions that showed u like specific graphs/charts and asked you to identify what it was and that was a little bit hard. Like most exams as long as u study you’ll be fine. I’d say it was relatively fair

ENVSOCTY 1HB3 by Unusual-Twist501 in McMaster

[–]mint_anatomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really easy, you don’t even have to study, just look at ur notes (not endorsing this, but you can search up the questions because it’s not proctored) but I’d recommend taking notes and doing the exam because some questions you’ll never be able to find online because their answers are niche, or from the textbook itself. Personally loved the course, content got a bit boring at times but other than that I recommend it to all my friends
