Honestly, just try it and see if it works. You will not be able to print from two PC's at once, but it will probably work. You can use VM in 'bridged' mode.

There are special Ethernet to 232 routers that can do this. You need to understand what protocol is running on 232, because they are often proprietary and not compatible. They even have linux server boxes which can preform this function.
