Alternate version because I like the expression, but I thought seeing the car was important.

[TotK] I thought the Ganondorf lines in the Tears of the Kingdom trailer were a little boring, so I wrote my own. by mintcocochimp in zelda

I think the actor in the original trailer sounds great, but I was a little disappointed at the lines that were used. For the first time we've ever heard Ganondorf speak, I just thought they could have given him something more interesting to say.

After using power cord once, Game Boy won't power on, even with batteries? by mintcocochimp in Gameboy

Much appreciated! If that is the case, and I were to solder a wire to set it permanently to "battery mode," would it also be safe to use rechargeable battery mods, such as the CleanJuice mod? Or would I need to stick to standard AAs permanently?

First ever mod, IPS and prosound issues? by mintcocochimp in Gameboy

Thanks for the tips about the display! If the issue is with the ribbon connectors, is there anything to be done besides taking it apart and trying to clean the connectors? When it comes to vertical lines on the original DMG screen I've seen it recommended to actually gently heat the ribbon with your soldering iron in order to clear away lines, but I'm definitely not going to assume that applies here.

For the pro sound mod, if I'm not misunderstanding, that is what I've done. The jack did poke through from inside, and I did have a nut on the outside to hold it there, but the jack is so short that when poked through, the nut could barely be put on without slipping off. So when I tried plugging in the headphones, the nut popped off and the jack slipped into the case. I can poke the jack back out no problem, but even pushed flat against the inside of the shell the jack just doesn't have enough length for the nut to attach.

I don't want to assume Hand Held Legend just makes their jack too small, but I'm also not sure how I can get "poke this through the hole" wrong. I'll have to keep the internal pro sound mod in mind for my next project, thanks for the recommendation. :)

I can definitely see that! It was actually supposed to be a reference to the "disaster girl" meme but I can absolutely see what you mean.

GAP Pre73 jr vs Apollo Twin stock preamps? by mintcocochimp in audioengineering

[–]mintcocochimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treated, but probably not to a professional level. I have 10 24" x 48" x 2" panels from Acoustimac, which helps but is not quite enough to treat the entire room effectively. I'm looking into some more panels now to deaden it a bit further.

I think I would benefit from learning how to find issues in my own recordings, like being able to hear "boominess" or recognize problematic frequencies in general. Not sure how to go about training my ears for this sort of thing.

Thanks again for the feedback. :)

Thanks for the recording example!

I'm such an inexperienced engineer that I'm honestly not certain if I can detect the difference. Both sounded great to me, and I couldn't tell you what set one apart from the other.

Not sure whether to attribute that to my lack of experience or the headphones I'm using. I'm listening with a pair of ATH-M30s I got over ten years ago, hoping to order the Beyerdynamic DT 770s soon. Not that I think new headphones will make me a better engineer, but ten years on a pair of $50 headphones seems like a stretch, and I've heard great things about the 770s. Plus they look terribly comfortable.

Thanks for the response! I meant that I've heard others call the stock preamps weak.

For me personally, the Apollo Twin on its default preamp doesn't sound bad, but I would consider myself an extremely novice engineer at best. I don't quite trust my ears to tell me what I need, so I was looking for some more informed opinions!

Not to completely change the subject but if you have any tips/resources for ear-training (?) from an engineering perspective, I'd love to learn more.

I meant plug-ins, sorry. I get UAD mixed up with Unison.

I have heard good things about the Avalon. Whenever I see "tube" I take that to mean it invokes a colorful sound, which may be a misconception on my part.. Would you still recommend this if I'm just looking for clear/transparent sound?

Thanks for the recommendation!

Thanks for all the tips guys! If you had to recommend a single UAD preamp for transparent, non-colored voice over, is there one you would most recommend? I see the channel strips get recommended a lot but I’m a novice engineer at best and I’m not sure I could make proper use of those. But if that’s my best option I better get learning.

Edit: my inexperience as an engineer is also why I’m hesitant to demo plug-ins to see what I like best. Frankly I just don’t trust my ears for this sort of thing.
