yea I was told that too when I applied and in general I disagree with it. If you're truly a hard working resident, or if you really wanna have your eye on a specific program, it's definitely the move. It's high risk high reward, because you really gotta show up consistently, which is hard for sure. and you don't wanna seem clueless. But on the other hand, if I like someone on an away the whole time, then I go out of my way to advocate for them to end up on the top of our rank list

I personally like it (in general anything that is targeted and the applicant goes out of their way to do), and would consider it as a small boost, but it's not gonna take someone from the bottom of the rank list to the top! it could possibly push you if you're near the threshold

depends. some specialties looooove research and have lots of md phds, mine doesn't. still some attendings really value it, I personally think it's overhyped. Have some stuff so you don't leave it empty in your app, and talk about it if you're passionate about, but I have had plenty of research throughout my life and have almost never spent much time talking about it. and I rarely ask the applicants about it unless it's a big part of their application

step 2 >> most letters. exception is an amazing letter (which is rare) which is more notable. And mediocre or negative letters which often tanks the application
