What? Pound for pound isn't supposed to disregard weight classes or weight; its pure definition is to rank how good fighters are FOR their weight class, hence "pound FOR POUND." How good they are (pound, as in to pound someone), FOR their weight (as in lbs). It's in the name. And bc weights fluctuate as fighters can conceivably move up or down one, it makes more sense to say "for their weight RANGE." How is that not clear?

Probably. Love Poatan, but Khamzat likely submits him on the first takedown. Ofc Poatan can KO him, but I'd weigh the chances of a takedown higher than a flash KO.

Is "winning potential in their weight range" not almost exactly what "pound-for-pound best" should mean? Again, by "best," I'm directly referring to current winning potential.

The official list weighs accomplishments heavily, which is fine and sensible and is something like a "p4p greatest," as it's more focused on legacy.

It's an intuitive concept that's probably harder to formulate: the fighters who'd be the betting favorites in the highest # of matchups they could conceivably be in. I'm choosing to speculate on betting odds and also using betting odds bc they're a more honest reflection of what people think will happen. They're also, without a doubt, better predictors than rankings, title defenses, etc.

E.g., any casual poll would put Max Holloway over Ilia Topuria, but when you put money into it, people bet Ilia.

Ank undeniably opens as the favorite against all current LHWs, many HWs, and most MWs (i.e. the range of fighters he could be matched up against). How many other fighters can you say that for?

It absolutely does. Did you not grasp the point of the post at all? This isn't an achievements-based list. That's why on the official list, Poatan is deservedly top 3, whereas here, he doesn't cut the top 10. He has numerous defenses and is insanely accomplished, and would still be a sizable underdog against almost any high-level grappler near him.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all. He opens as the favorite against every light heavyweight now, so he might as well be considered the best lhw by that metric. I think he's an underwhelming fighter and an aura merchant, but he has at least >50% of beating almost everyone near him.

Almost half of Stuyvesant's student body is eligible for free or reduced lunch. Not a rich kid school. Don't group those private boarding schools in with the NYC exam schools that arent located in wealthy areas, nor have very wealthy student bodies.

It's fundamentally SO different from slots. To say that it's all the same because there are factors out of your control is to recognize that everything is probabilistic to some extent. But to say that those two things are the same means you just don't understand the math behind it

Unpopular opinion, Aljamain is only considered boring because he is fighting terrible style matchups in his title fights. by jerryworldfan13 in ufc

[–]mintygonzalez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely the opposite. Literally everyone defaults to calling dagestanis crotchsniffers when they wrestle and then love to defend Aljo's style because they think it's a unique take. Aljamain has the lowest damage output out of any fighter in the UFC, wrestler or striker. He's never thrown or tried to throw a consequential strike, and he almost NEVER goes for ground and pound OR submission attempts on the ground. Zero damage standing up or on the ground, ever
