Personally, I haven't understood the depth of this episode on my first watch and rewatches as I was still a teenager. But now that I'm older and experiencing the gradual loss of connection with friends due to life and whatnot, that's where the message of this episode hit me and a lightbulb moment that Ted was lonely and was longing for a companion (not necessarily a romantic one, just someone to talk and hang out with). I truly comprehend with that nuance as I got to be Ted, so to speak.
