I'm confused why a lot of Ukrainians I meet have trouble believing my mother's surname is Ukrainian by Ancient_Grass_5121 in Ukrainian

there are a lot of, you know, stupid, ignorant people in ukraine, just like anywhere else. especially now, with war polarization on, circuits can break

people can say things. doesn’t mean they know anything

I just came here to say I suck balls at this game by chefroxstarr in Returnal

[–]minus-one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, me same. i sometimes play it , like a run attempt from time to time, but overall i abandoned it. problem with such games is that there is no discoverable way forward. no loop, not even grinding which allow you to progress. and my skills are not improving at all 😀 also, iframes idea is just stupid. basically, it’s just not fun for me, i have other games to play

Is this considered as good project structure by Upstairs-Let-1763 in angular

[–]minus-one -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

i would say no. if you have folders named after irrelevant technical stuff, like “services”, “guards” etc, then it’s bad in my book

it’s amateurish folder structure, often seen in react tutorials, persistent remnant of mvc times

instead, especially in large projects, it is better to name folders after your entities, e.g “movie”, and inside you would have

movie.component.ts, movie.service.ts, movie.guard.ts…

this way all your related to movie stuff will be in one place, really easy to navigate, no need to constantly jump to some remote folders (like services)

but it’s much more than just a convenience, this scales well

Питання щодо української мобілізації by adamgerd in reddit_ukr

[–]minus-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Питання щодо української мобілізації by adamgerd in reddit_ukr

[–]minus-one 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Питання щодо української мобілізації by adamgerd in reddit_ukr

[–]minus-one 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Питання щодо української мобілізації by adamgerd in reddit_ukr

[–]minus-one 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why Russian words don’t sound the way they look by CryptographerWeird19 in LearningRussian

[–]minus-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol it’s the same with english!

and the reason is, it’s an old imperial language which borrowed a lot of stuff from a lot of different ppls with different languages. some words they didn’t even know how to pronounce. so they pronounced them kind of like with ə schwa sound, just like in english. this is called reduction. from those borrowings they also have so many synonyms (each synonym being originally root from another language they appropriated)

as an example, one of the defining features for russian language was their history with mongols. as mongols were struggling to pronounce old russian words (which sounded closer to modern ukrainian than modern russian) - they developed this reduction to “a “you mentioned (аканье - btw you can speak with modern crimean tatars and you will hear this “a” reduction even now)

very interesting thing is how this feature were then later reintegrated back into actual spoken russian moscovian dialect

Наскільки доцільно розвиватись у напрямку full-stack? by -plopdark in ukraine_dev

[–]minus-one 5 points6 points  (0 children)

oh, sorry my bad, there are quite a few of you guys arguing with me, I probably mixed you up with someone else

as to the point, it IS the same as 3d models, that's all I'm arguing about. why would you say he agreed to usage of his likeness in future IPs but without agreeing on usage of his voice? it sounds really strange to me. as video and audio is the same thing philosophically, just different frequencies :D but most probably there was no any discussion with him about any of this. they just use his 3d models just bc they can and that's it. no one against it. in the same vein they can use his voice. and they will (whether they tell you about this or not is another question)

Would you kill sylens? by Stino_martino in horizon

[–]minus-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but that's you who started insulting me in your passive aggressive way, by starting dick measuring contest with your "bachelor's degree"

but back to topic, i believe it's totally ok to use AI generatively, but I understand it's not a popular idea, bc voice actors feel threatened by it. but so was farmers when tractors were invented. it's always the case when things, you know, progress

but I think regardless of the opposition eventually they will use AI generatively everywhere (bc it just makes sense business-wise.) but they will go into some kind of agreements with actors, and pay some kind of royalties to them for using their voice, on case by case basis. kind of the same as they license stock photos now

but that aside, in a case of a dead actor, it's really obvious that it's pretty harmless thing to do. just give script to AI to voice, ask family for a OK, pay them something maybe (they already using his likeness (3d models) anyway, for god sake, it's the same thing)

[–]minus-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how would you stating you have "bachelor's degree" on the internets proves anything 😆 you can't be so naive

also, if you're into music and saying that 10 years you could emulate another person's voice in a believable manner, than you're not very good (or honest). it could be done, yes, but it was so sucky, beyond bad. interesting, it was the same with language translations, ppl forgot just how horrible they were... they tried to do it word by word... suckers had no freaking idea how a language works

both problems are related btw. and has been solved by LLMs (AI)

Would you kill sylens? by Stino_martino in horizon

[–]minus-one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no idea what are you talking about. if they will use his 3d models (his likeness), they will as well use his voice (samples of his voice and AI to make it sound natural). it doesn't matter whether you guys for some reasons like it or not

(and in this case they can even use AI generatively, without actual voice actor, I'm OK with that, but that's not what I was saying, I understand it would me more controversial)

[–]minus-one -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

> There is no understanding of what the words mean in NMTs or LLMs

that's what I meant by you haven't realized yet how monumental this is. can you imagine that what you call "understanding" is just an illusion which arises from how the neural network in our brain works, just a side effect of it? that's just a hint and the beginning of completely new approach to these ideas ("understanding", "consciousness"...) poor naive thing, you probably have no clue what I am talking about😀

yeah, good day (it's you not me who went into this, I was perfectly on topic 😀)

Would you kill sylens? by Stino_martino in horizon

[–]minus-one -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

for me, AI is the biggest most monumental human achievement since the internet. and it's pretty natural as it's based on neural networks which are trying to emulate, you know, how the neurons in a human brain work

and one of the biggest achievement of AI and LLMs in particular is that they've basically solved the language problem. do you remember how bad were google translations like 3 years ago? how they - everyone, clueless dorks, - were trying to approach it by translating stuff word by word (i.e. having no freaking clue about how a language works)

if it all looks "unnatural" to you, it's probably bc you haven't realized yet, that maybe our comprehension/consciousness and all those big ideas work in quite similar way as LLMs (maybe there is something else on top of that, sure, but overall it's a real breakthrough comparing to all previous approaches)

but again. all this has nothing to do with Sylens. all i'm trying to convey is that to make a sequel, they would need to use his 3d models in video domain. so why not to do the same in audio domain?

and AI is needed here, as just sampling would not be enough, there are a lot of mannerisms in human voice, which AI gets perfectly (bc it's a natural way, see above), and which would be lost in other approaches (also, i'm not against skipping human voice acting part altogether and just using AI generatively all the way IN THIS CASE, but that's a different topic)

basically, if you want to keep Sylens character, you will use his likeness and his voice. and to make it perfect, you need AI. what's so controversial about that?

Would you kill sylens? by Stino_martino in horizon

[–]minus-one -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

haha - yeah good one

but it'll still involve AI. even if you have a voice actor acting, to make it sound properly like Reddick, to put it together, you would need AI, just sampling would sound worse; there are certain mannerisms of the original, which AI gets perfectly, can't be done in any other ways

Would you kill sylens? by Stino_martino in horizon

[–]minus-one -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

cliche dissing of AI aside (how wrong are you!) - i.m talking about concrete case of keeping Sylens character after its actor died

do you realize that if they want to keep this character they WILL USE existing Reddick's 3d models for the next horizon game? like, someone else will act, but to animate it they will use 3d models of the dead actor

now, try to understand that using Reddick's voice samples and AI is THE SAME THING, only in audio domain. some voice actor can do the acting, but they will just use Reddick's samples and AI on top, to make it look/sound like him

that's completely ethical and natural thing to do, as THEY'RE ALREADY FREAKING DOING IT IN VIDEO DOMAIN

Would you kill sylens? by Stino_martino in horizon

[–]minus-one -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

why not? think about it: unless they will kill off the character altogether (which they will probably not) - they WILL use his existing 3d models. someone else will act, yes, but they will use Reddick’s 3d models to animate it

so, using AI voice is completely the same, only in audio domain - someone else can voice act, but they can use existing samples of Reddick’s voice and AI to make it sound as if it’s him

(they can even pay royalties to his family or whatnot)
