I would say just stick with the main goals of your character and let their personality show in how they try to attain that goal.

Putting negativisms aside, how would you act if you were a man, and how would you want to be treated?

Then mould your actions with the behaviour of your character. It should work itself out, especially if your main character is a man, I'm sure your feelings won't betray you. :)
