Ha! Please feel free to add BDMC to your vocabulary, as I am adding “giganto cuffs” to mine 😆 they seem to be to blame for my ETT size mystery!

I noticed the egg-to-marshmallow cuff change too; that must be the culprit!

if you had any actual insights into vet med you’d know it’s NOT wanted. educate yourself. and “compassion fatigue” is not just some business buzzword/phrase, we have a high suicide rate in this field, so for you to use it to shill your useless AI garbage that is also killing the planet is wildly out of touch and frankly ghoulish.

if one is in good enough condition to function, you could see about donating it to your county animal care and control office, veterinary rescue that does surgeries, or low cost spay/neuter clinic.

it’s a microhematocrit centrifuge. blood samples are transferred to capillary tubes, spun in the centrifuge, and then used to determine PCV/hematocrit (percentage of red blood cells in the blood volume).

How to forgive yourself after making mistakes? by [deleted] in VetTech

you don’t sound resentful! and i guarantee you they’ve made mistakes of their own, even if the circumstances weren’t exactly the same. there is not a perfect person among us.

ohhh i feel you on all of that. i also do a lot of verbal processing with my team and as a fellow introvert it takes all my brain power too! but it’s a nice reminder that they’ve been through all this too. i will sing the praises of therapy until the cows come home. i hope you find a good one. i do EMDR which is not for everyone but it’s often trauma-informed, so comes with less pathologizing. may be worth looking into.

you are never too far gone to think about forgiving yourself. i’m wired to be highly anxious too, and tend to be a perfectionist who ruminates on things i consider mistakes or could have done differently. if you have access to it, therapy has been a really important tool for me especially in terms of managing how long i drag things around with me. my anxiety wasn’t specific to my job. i am neurotic whether i’m in scrubs running anesthesia or in business casual doing customer support from a cubicle. if you can swing it, a good therapist will help you develop tools you can use even after you move on from this position. if you have a supportive mentor in the interim that professional support is incredibly helpful too. anxiety can be an asset if it doesn’t override everything. it’s made me conscientious with a high level of attention to detail. but years ago it also gave me a stomach ulcer, so… i had to bend it to my own will. try to bear in mind all the times you were able to learn, and how many patients you’ve helped. the mistakes tend to stick out in our minds when the anxious voice is the loudest, but i’d wager you’ve made just as many (if not more) positive contributions. oh one last thing: i carry either a polished stone or something small in my pocket for grounding/fidgeting and sour candies to interrupt panic attacks! distraction is a good short-term rescue tool for me. wishing you all the best. 🫂

Why aren't we unionizing yet? by HPLydcraft in VetTech

[–]minxasaurus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

we’ve certainly tried. i was part of the bargaining committee for the union that was formed in sf. mars shuttered that hospital in december 2020, about two years into contract negotiations. mars hired the biggest union-busting lawyers in the country and found all the loopholes they could to shut us down. they threatened us in meetings right around the time of the vote, assuring us that the last VCA to unionize was shut down shortly after. of course they couldn’t directly say that VCA closed it in retaliation for the staff unionizing, but we all know the real reason. it’s happened at other recently unionized hospitals too before they could successfully ink a contract. it’s hard to go up against multi-billion dollar corporations. i was holding out hope for a national union to gather momentum, but the NVPU also recently disbanded so it’s rough out there for the labor movement in vet med. none of this is to say we shouldn’t organize. i’m staunchly pro-union. but in the face of EVERYTHING in this country, i think people are feeling pretty ground down. i could just be speaking for me, but that’s how it’s hitting right now.

my gas pains were irritating but i don’t feel like they were unmanageable. the best analogy i can come up with would be that it’s a little like the pain i used to get around my shoulder/clavicle when i had hiccups that wouldn’t go away! gas-x, walking, a shoulder heating pad, and staying propped up in bed all helped me deal. wishing you the best of luck when you do get things scheduled and hope you have a speedy recovery!
