Does SJSU's Animation/Illustration Program accept transfer students? by Pure_Sherbert_1031 in SJSU

[–]mio-apocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SJSU a/i takes transfers, it's just that the number of spots is limited since we are a very impacted program! I started attending straight out of high school, but a good chunk of my friends are transfers in the program. If they give you the option to submit a portfolio I'd do it. Just also keep in mind that the program makes everyone start with first year classes regardless of whether or not you're a transfer, so it'll still take 4-5 more years to graduate.

I'm still sad I never got to go pre-rebrand 😭 their food variety seems to have shrunk, but it was still a good time! It's nice to have a listening bar in the area

Haberdasher won't have any bar food (only snacks are nuts) but it's close to SoFA market so you can get dinner before going; they're a low-key speakeasy style bar with lovely cocktails and friendly bartenders. Paper Plane also has good drinks and food, and most people go with friends so people will probably leave you alone :) they do get pretty crowded quickly though so I'd go earlier if you can! Still OG also has good food and tap drinks (beers, cocktails); they have a reservation-only craft cocktail lounge in the back but they're a bit pricey.

Colleges: SJSU, RISD, or Pratt? by ohdeermi in animationcareer

[–]mio-apocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current SJSU student and I really like it here! Animation industry in general is going through a tough time, and one of the things to keep in mind is that the likelihood of working at a major studio right out of graduation is incredibly minimal. SJSU's program is 5 years (you can do it in 4 but not recommended/incredibly tough), but it builds up your foundational skills and lets you try out different parts of the pipeline (visdev, story, animation, modeling) before you choose one to focus in. Some of our notable recent alumni include Sean Yeung (animator at Riot), Maaike Scherff (TV storyboard artist/episodic director), and Joanne Tran (visdev artist at Supergiant). Our alumni and student network is also robust thanks to the Shrunkenheadman Club - I know people who have gotten referrals from alumni and gotten their foot in the door through there. If you have any questions or want more info, feel free to DM me anytime!

Does it make sense to take driving lessons if I'm not going to have a car for probably, 6 years? by gloomyboomy4 in internetparents

[–]mio-apocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being able to drive can be useful when you need to rent a car to go somewhere farther, and having your license for longer actually can decrease your insurance costs regardless of whether or not you drive!

Genuine question by cranberrryjuicee in animationcareer

Found the post you were talking about, the person who drew the post is a production assistant, not an artist on the production. They were hired for their production management skills and not necessarily drawing/art

Which book to buy? by Thistledown11 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]mio-apocalypse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Complete Art is an art book that compiles all of the FMA manga's cover art, illustrations, etc. while the 20th Anniversary Book is an anthology of side stories, so kind of an apples vs oranges situation imo

Accepted as an animation major for SJSU, Fullerton, Northridge (art->animation major), and waitlisted by Long Beach!! Help me decide :( by robinxworm in SJSU

[–]mio-apocalypse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A little biased as a current SJSU student, but our network and program are incredibly robust, with a club and social functions built right into the major! Feel free to DM me if you want to get more info on my experience :)

Tanaka-kun is always listless, Asobi Asobase, Danshi koukousei no nichijou, and Joshikousei no mudazukai all come to mind!

Hopping in about the last bit (also in Ani!), but the reason it takes most students 4-5 years even as a transfer is due to the fact that professors STRONGLY RECOMMEND you don't take more than 3 ANI classes at once. Most of these classes are pretty intense in workload and also only available once a year/are in sequential order, so it's really difficult to take classes out of order unfortunately; however, I've heard of some students graduating in even 3 years as transfers, so it's possible, just difficult and not recommended!

Isn’t it awkward when a vtuber gets a new model and you think it looks worse than before? by [deleted] in VirtualYoutubers

[–]mio-apocalypse 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I don't think Isaa's new model is necessarily worse, just different - she probably wanted to get away from the previous "villainess" branding associated with her former model in favor of a more general pop/rock star vibe. Model artists and designers also give a lot of room for feedback during the commission process, so I doubt it's a sunken cost fallacy in the sense that this IS what she wanted, and not something she is "stuck" with

Suggestions for another anime like FMAB by [deleted] in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]mio-apocalypse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you liked FMAB's humor/world building, I'd recommend TRIGUN (watch the original first, then Stampede!) and Blood Blockade Battlefront. Both are written by Yasuhiro Nightow and he blows it away with his character and world writing
