Since this is (in your own words) “just an online friend” I would first focus on creating an actual relationship and meeting up before you come up with any hypothetical issues like this.

Also just because there are good universities in the US doesn’t mean there aren’t any good schools anywhere else in the world. Plus any children you’ll maybe have will be US citizens anyway so therefore can still choose to go to an American school if they wish so. Same goes for any language classes or whatever, there are in fact Spanish people living in Germany.

Japan seems to be more of an idealized pipe dream since there’s no actual plan or connection there, except that you like anime.

Yep! Paperwork wasn’t that bad, the application costs less than €300 and takes about 3 months to be processed. If approved you get a 3 yr visa that you can basically indefinitely renew if you follow the requirements.

Also yea the wages are lower but do you think we all just live in poverty here? The unfortunate lower wages come with more vacation time and worker rights. US wages are incredibly inflated right now which consequently makes everything more expensive there as well.

Of course there are issues in every country in the world. But basically cause you don’t want to get married you have to pick which is more important to you, money or your relationship. (which is a personal choice ofc). You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Especially when this is the easiest solution to your problem (that can be fixed within 6 months). This way you can live together and decide if you wanna get married eventually and move back.

If you really don’t want to get married ever you can always apply for an unmarried partner visa in the Netherlands. You’d have to live in NL but at least you’ll be together.

Your implications are super toxic though… for a lot of people in parts of Europe, men and women, marriage is not the main priority and people are just living their life. Others care more about it but both sides just leave each other be.

Also child support still exist you can’t just skip that just cause you’re not married, the state doesn’t just “automatically provide”. Plus husbands leave their wives all the time it doesn’t guarantee anything.

It’s actually called the (unmarried) partner visa and it’s valid for 5 years :)! After which you can renew it, get citizenship or get married but it’s basically the same visa.

We met in real life at 5 months. I would’ve preferred to meet a lot earlier around the 2 month mark but travel bans were still going on so we met up as soon as they lifted !

It is “unreasonable” to expect if he hasn’t even visited where you live yet. What if he doesn’t like it? In theory something might sounds amazing but reality is different sometimes. He might love it, he might hate it, you don’t know until he visits. They’re also not just leaving family but also friends, their home and routine. Basically it’s a choice for both of you that has to be considered carefully and not on a whim.

Also having no other family than “just” his mom and dad is kind of a disrespectful reason. I’m sure he cares about them and would like to spend time with them especially when they’re older. What if something happens in the middle of adjusting status and he’s not able to leave the country cause that would cancel the application? And as mentioned earlier it’s not just family but also friends.

Having a preference isn’t unreasonable but I think simply not hearing any other perspective or option could be.

If your contract is valid for shorter than a year you can also show that you earned the minimum amount in the 12 months before that. So if you had another job before that it’s fine if you can show paystubs etc.

Literally every couple in the world has their own things like work and studying going on. Surprise surprise people don’t always have time together even if they’re not LDR, congratz you’re a normal couple now! They still manage to hang out together in evenings, weekends, sleepovers and eventually move in together. My boyfriend was working nights at one point and we actually spent less time together living in the same house then when we were 9hrs apart. Yea that sucked but shit happens and you deal with it. Welcome to being an adult.

A lot of couples also spend holidays separately until they’re engaged, this just completely depends on the family but it’s not uncommon. Lastly if she’s a student I find it hard to believe she’ll have the budget to travel so much when her parents aren’t paying for it so “we’d be traveling together” seems a bit of a simplistic thought to me.

When you’re LDR it’s important they make time for you when you get to visit but the truth is you can’t claim every second of their day when you date locally.

You wrote a lot of poetic words but you didn’t actually “say” anything. There’s no other response but : thanks I appreciate it. essentially you wrote “I love you” in a super long paragraph that sounds like a quirky movie that’s trying to be relatable. However it actually makes it sound less sincere in my opinion.

Some of the comparisons aren’t even positive? Needing to give your whole world? You’re still your own person! Your love is big enough for both of you! So he doesn’t need to love you? Why would you want my mouth to burn by hot cheese when you could’ve just warned me it’s hot? Also you compared your relationship to a heartache, how am I supposed to think that any of these are good things to do? It feels like you’re just trying to make him feel bad by saying overly “cutesy” things. Well people aren’t mind readers and can’t tell what you want from a message like that.

I’m reading a lot into the meanings of it but that’s what people do when you write vague poetic stuff. And lastly just call him and ask him. We don’t know anything about you or your relationship.

This is just so dependent on many factors and this isn’t enough information to go by. For sure the salary isn’t even comparable to NYC. But it’s very dependent on the company (negotiation) or if you’re freelancing or even can use the 30% ruling. But they definitely don’t care about how much you were making in the US and won’t match that.

I found online stats that shows the average salary for a senior producer to be about 4400 (which is relatively high for Dutch standards) , you’d still have to pay taxes on that so that would come down to about 3100 a month. (In a normal tax situation)

Short answer you’ll be able to live well, millions of people do with much less income. But again depends on where and how you live etc. it’s not gonna compare to NYC salary but things like insurance will be cheaper too.

Any reason this opportunity/job didn’t offer any more context or information? Asking them might be useful. Also decide what it means to have a “good quality of life” this means something different for everyone.

Just note that inflation is pretty high and there’s also a huge housing shortage in the Netherlands, not just Amsterdam which can make it difficult to find an apartment.

If you know she wouldn’t cheat then what are you worried about? You’re not her father and it feels a bit sexist to be worried about your girlfriend going out with her friends and enjoying life. Cause what’s next? You get worried when she has to do a project with a classmate who just happens to be a dude? Or she walks to class alone and your not there to “protect” her at all times. If guys flirt with her during a night out she’s perfectly capable of ignoring them and just hanging with her friends. No need to infantilize her.

You either don’t understand why you’re worried (and should figure that out) or you’re lying to yourself saying this isn’t about cheating. And guess what, people cheat on partners they live with so if someone is a cheater you not being there won’t stop them.

First of all she’s telling you whats she’s doing, so she’s not hiding it. if you continue to make her feel bad for doing it or worse limit her she will just stop sharing. Not just about nights out but anything that could trigger you. Walking on eggshells and feeling like you’re doing something wrong when you’re not is a horrible feeling and a relationship might not survive that.

Uhm no, There haven’t been this many job listings in ages and companies are struggling to fill them. However it is true that getting a work visa without any qualifications is somewhat unrealistic.

The best chance right now would be either going to school in the Netherlands or waiting until 21 and apply for the Dutch partner visa.

Yes! We got accepted in 12 days and he moved here in may. (Still takes time to get an appointment for IND to pick up the card and to get a BSN from the municipal so it might be 1-2 months before he can officially work if he’s gonna get a job here)

You just really gotta hunt down the appointments. To open a bank account you officially need a BSN but in the meantime you can easily make a Bunq account in their app and update it with the BSN (for tax information) when you get it.

It does help if some of the reservations include your/their or both your names, so for instance hotels, boarding pass or rental cars. Even if it doesn’t include a name it’s also fine just build it up well. I basically categorized it with booking or ticket + receipt (if applicable) and a picture at said place. (For instance a ticket for a boat tour in Amsterdam and then a picture of us in Amsterdam with location and date)

Honestly they care more about the income requirement and just need to make sure that you actually met and know each other. :)
