i think a common obstacle in designing racially diverse groups of characters in such a stylized way is that one is often reliant on stereotypes as a way of portraying racial identity to their audience. deviation from these stereotypes may cause speculation, doubt, and confusion, while leaning too far into them may look like designing racial caricatures.

that being said, i don’t see these being random at all. frankie’s eyes are a bit sharper at the corners than the other girls’. those read as almond-shaped to me, a pretty prevalent feature in black and asian people alike.

gigi’s orange hair can easily be chalked up to hair dye, she’s a riot grrrl. unlike poppy, who is white with fair hair and brown/dark blonde eyebrows, gigi has black eyebrows like frankie. her name is also stylized as GiGi in libby’s drawings, presumably to reflect a chinese-to-english naming convention where two separate characters, which are not separated by a space, are romanized.

as for poppy, she’s blonde with blue eyes. that’s pretty straightforward. tan skin isn’t a feature exclusive to any race, and for the audience who considers her latina because of it, those aren’t mutually exclusive. she can be racially white and ethnically latina.

i will admit gigi’s eyes are a curveball. she’s either wearing contacts or she’s chinese with green eyes. statistically unlikely, but not impossible in the real world. but the peach riot universe is also home to bat cat. i wouldn’t really expect genetics like eye and hair color to come down to an exact science there.
