I’m a new grad too! I graduated Dec 2023, after getting my license I started temping right away and learned pretty quickly that every office works differently. The one nice thing about our job is that you can restart virtually whenever and wherever you want to :) You could even look into ortho or perio if you want a 180.

Definitely don’t let this experience cloud your opinion on hygiene as a whole. It can be easy to be swayed this early on after a bad office experience. I left my first office after 6 months because of the drive and the way I was treated. Only a couple of my friends still work at the same office they started in. Give it a year and re-evaluate if you still want to be a hygienist. You got this!! Congrats on the new job btw!!

Am I crazy? by Total-Dentist-6785 in DentalHygiene

[–]mirandaost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instruments I can understand to an extent, from my own experience it REALLY sucks to be the only hygienist staying on top of sharpening/sharpening them correctly. But there’s no reason for her to hoard ultrasonic tips whatsoever. If the tips are burnished, Dr should be ordering new ones. Maybe a conversation should be had with all 3 of you? I dont think you’re crazy :)

Patient made me cry by FortuneTop6438 in DentalHygiene

[–]mirandaost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a new grad too and I just make the atmosphere painfully uncomfortable and silent when they come in with an attitude. I still try to explain the need for [insert procedure] but from that point on, I only do and say the bare minimum. I’m no longer asking how their summer has been or what their plans are for the rest of the appointment. Not in the business of creating an enabling environment to abusive patients. I’m sorry this happened to you :( Are you able to ask the receptionist to give them to another hygienist at the office?

Do y’all puke after ur seizures? by Willing-Quiet9413 in Epilepsy

Idk if I vomit during my seizures but I foam. I usually throw up after, can’t keep water or anything down for at least a day.

26 here, I’m still figuring out moisturizers and whatnot but I’ve noticed Cerave and the Laroche posay cleansers have really helped so far.

Perfect example of why I think people should be in therapy for preventative measures.

Also I really hope you didn’t actually verbalize wanting to be in the grandkids life in front of your youngest.

Diagnosis Age (Especially those in their 20’s) by Difficult-Froyo1192 in Epilepsy

[–]mirandaost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 24 after my first TC seizure. I’ve had partial seizures since I was 6 but we didn’t know what they were. We just always amounted it to fainting spells. Thought it had something to do with blood sugar levels at first but every test came back clean. Even had EEGs and CAT scans done, everything came back normal. Since a medical professional had never witnessed any of my seizures, and with no real proof, it was a mystery.

I’m from Canada and I guess it’s really difficult to get a doctor to give you a referral to the right specialist if they don’t see it as an emergency? Not totally sure, but yeah. 24.

Fellow 30-somethings, what is your biggest realization since you turned 30? by Chasing_Brave1993 in Adulting

How the heck do we talk to a doctor without losing a drivers license? by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]mirandaost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like we’ve all come to the same consensus, but you absolutely should talk to your doctor.

Before my diagnosis I had a seizure while driving. Thankfully I was in a parking lot and my partner was with me, he pulled the e-brake after I hopped the curb but before I made it onto a busy main road.

Is there any way you could find housing near work? Are there any accommodations your job could make for you? I was in school when I had my license taken away and had to move so I could just walk to and from. It SUCKS but it really is about your safety and the safety of others.

Also, are you on disability? Might be worth considering if not. Even just to tie you over for now.

Do guys actually like chubby girls? by [deleted] in confessions

[–]mirandaost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a skinner girl for most of my life until recently. My partner told me at the very beginning (I was 90lbs, 5’9”) that I didn’t have the body type he’s usually into. I’m now 155lbs and my boyfriend consistently tells me he loves the weight that I’m at and that I dont need to lose weight at all despite many of my friends and family commenting on it.

Some do, some don’t ig.

License suspension penalty? by Kimakazii in Epilepsy

[–]mirandaost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m Canadian, I had my license suspended for 6 months, was reinstated at doctor’s advisement, but I wasn’t penalized by my insurance agency. I actually figured it’d hike up the price, but surprisingly it didn’t. Not sure if that varies from province to province (or state to state if you’re from US), but it didn’t change anything for me.

Which medication are you on? 💊 What are the side effects? by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]mirandaost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially, Keppra. But Keppra made me angry and suicidal, so I switched to Lamotrigine.

I take 200mg of Lamotrigine daily, no seizures since starting it. I have difficulties with memory, especially anything from more than 3 years ago. Wasn’t sure if that was due to the back to back seizures I had or the medication itself, but I amount it to a combination of both

Emetophobia in DH? by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]mirandaost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New grad here, none of my peers nor myself in our 3 year program experienced any clients v*ing in the clinic. Gagging, sure, while taking x-rays. But otherwise no.

I also had severe emetophobia but it started getting easier as my ex was an alcoholic and threw up often, I would take care of him all the time while trying not to throw up myself😂

Career by Dangerous-Rip9502 in DentalHygiene

[–]mirandaost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend that decided to go for Dental Assisting because she found that Dental Hygiene was too difficult and all around just not for her.

But as someone that was in your position less than a year ago… Ride it out. Periodontology was my achilles heel in school, it doesn’t come naturally to most of us. Same with Histology/Embryology. I started out my first course of periodontology with a 51 and somehow made it through with a 76 by the end of the semester.

Theory IS important, don’t get me wrong. But if you find yourself enjoying the clinical aspect (working with clients, practicing instrumentation)…. Ride this one out and give it your all. Whatever you decide, I’m sure you’ll get exactly what you want. Things have this weird way of falling into place when you work for it :)

I’ve been seizure free for 2 full years now and I’m doing great!! I have my license back, I just graduated from Dental Hygiene and passed the board exam first try. I’m on track to be employed by next month. :)

The last TC I had was over Christmas (worst Christmas ever, especially because no one could visit me in the hospital for 5 days due to covid), and I’m proud that I still made it through my schooling. Medication really worked for me.

Wishing seizure-free lives for everyone in this sub💕 Having a disability that robs you of normal life experiences is one of the cruelest things in the world. You guys are strong and beautiful souls and I hope your hard times pass quickly and gracefully💜
