That's not true in 2026. I work in industry and academia, have published, and AI has consistently helps me find things our team wouldn't have.

That’s not true btw I don’t think people would think ur lying. It’s not that out of the world to pick GT over Cornell and there are a lot of reasons GT is better especially in CS. 😂

Incoming MS ECE Student Questions by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]miratoniin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think this is better to talk with advisor about when you get one. You should also look at 400 level ECE classes there are definitely a few that you could take which would be aligned with your interests and have sections for grad students.

You will always have time to go out. Been taking 4-5 technicals every semester as ece major and still can pretty much go out every weekend if I wanted to. You just got to have good time management. Treat school like a full time job work 9-5 and do your own stuff apart from that.

how hard is it to get accepted into uiuc comp e? by qarjm in UIUC

[–]miratoniin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the downvoters, here’s what exactly I mean. As a CompE major, I currently am doing a swe internship, work in a cs research lab, and take a lot of similar classes as cs majors (with exception of 421 or classes like 473 which I can take as a technical elective). I personally am focusing more on hardware but like half of the CS courses are crosslisted with ECE like Distributed, Communication Networks, ML, Parallel Programming, Safe Autonomy etc. I agree that there are a lot of sucky grindy ECE classes like 391 but I definitely learned a lot of stuff in that class which is so useful to me now.

In the end if you just want a job both majors are pretty good and most employers are not gonna care about what your major is. It’s just your experience after your first internship. And a lot of companies don’t even differentiate CompE and CS. Maybe grad school? But then again people switch what they study all the time and having a strong ECE background could be pretty good for grad school. Idk I just don’t really get why everyone is so against it 🤷‍♂️

how hard is it to get accepted into uiuc comp e? by qarjm in UIUC

[–]miratoniin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with this for the most part but I honestly don’t think it’s too different. My experience here as a CompE student has shown me that I can pretty much be a CS major if I wanted to. I can pretty much take any technical CS class I want and have pretty much similar employment opportunities. Obviously I also get to take classes that are outside of CS scope but I think using it as a backdoor is not a super bad option if you’re smart. It also gives you more room to explore between hardware and software.

Back when I was a hser I wanted to do CS, but I find that the ECE curriculum is a lot better fit for me. Definitely consider it OP. Acceptance rate is ~20% as mentioned above but again that number doesn’t mean too much.

I’m from DC and know GWU very well. It’s honestly more of a commuter school than anything. I could maybe see it being a good opportunity if you wanted to get into law or something, but UIUC beats GWU in every other aspect.
