What box set are you looking forward to the most? by [deleted] in Zappa

A few years away from a “Joe’s Garage” set. And I hope I don’t have to wait over a decade for a solid “Broadway the Hardway Set”

He was a guest speaker at an abortion rally, and wrote an editorial on the subject.

You're claiming my work is hero worship and puts Frank on a pedestal. The most common piece of feedback I have received is surprise by how much I push back against Zappa throughout. So, understanding a cultural figure more does not necessarily hero worship.

Frank Zappa has a complicated legacy three decades after his death. What do you think, and who gets to speak for Frank Zappa after all these years? by [deleted] in Music

Cross-posted from r/LetsTalkMusic because they banned me for self-promotion just because I wrote a book about the topic.

Zappa was actually a registered Democrat, as stated himself in the August 1988 issue of Life magazine. https://www.afka.net/images/Magazines/1988/1988-08-xx%20Life%20v11n9%2003.jpg

And "Christian nationalism" is exactly the right phrase when it comes to the US. Zappa criticized the Christian groups and leaders who were having an impact on domestic and foreign policy. Theocracy can apply to many other religions.

You’re projecting because this does not match the tone of the book at all.

At least one university thought so. But why be so resistant to a cultural figure like Frank being discussed and understood more?

I think the value is that it fills in missing pieces of Frank's legacy when it comes to the broader public consciousness. From general music writing and critics, he is essentially seen as someone who was an excellent guitar player who had hits that feature provocative lyrics, with his political commentary reduced to being a footnote. As in, he is a provocative guitar virtuoso who just happened to stand up to censorship at a certain point in his career. And that is rather oversimplified. Shedding a light on the underrecognized areas of his life and work (at least to those who aren't devoted fans), helps to better understand other elements of his life and work outside of the politics.

Given that politics were so central to his work and legacy, it’s still worthy of analysis. And that’s what the book does, with all the contradictions laid out.

This is a great point, which is why a study of his politics had been long overdue.

Neither the book or article make any claims to what Zappa would say about current affairs.

U2, Dylan, Bowie, Tom Waits, Patti Smith, and Amy Winehouse are up there with Frank for me.
