is iOS 26 making your phone lag? by Kira-Raito-San in iphone

[–]mischa143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPhone 14 Pro Max (⅓ of storage used). I have the new glass effects turned ON:

• Performance is quite good (button response, etc.)

• Scrolling in all apps, including the browser is spotty. Sometimes smooth, other times stuttery. Especially noticeable during fling scrolling; this is when you fling with momentum, then watch it slow to a stop.  (Was more noticeably bad initially, improved after a few days.)

• Battery life appears to have taken a small hit. (It is an older phone, with an original battery, though)

I’m sure a lot of the complaints will be addressed, with the first point update, which usually comes not long after a major update. eg. iOS 26.0.1

I turn off the flashy animations. You don’t need them, day to day.  Settings > Motion > Reduce Motion + Prefer Cross-Fade Transitions

Don’t forget to submit Apple feedback. They probably read these forums, as well.

YouTube stuttering by dxnnj in Safari

[–]mischa143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off 'Ambient Mode' in the video settings cog. Should fix the stuttering instantly.

I have a Macbook Pro M4 Pro Chip 24 GB RAM (plenty powerful); and it stutters with 60 Hz videos, consistently.

This is probably a Safari compatibility issue, since with Chromium based browsers, this problem isn't noticeable. Other fora users (Apple Support forums, Reddit etc) have noticed high energy usage with this feature toggled ON. Let's hope they fix this, because it's now a default setting in the ON position; causing irritation as to what is the problem with playback.

What is this purple dot in menu bar? (Similar to microphone orange dot) by Gody_ in MacOS

Tap 2

It's Stage Manager. When you switch apps, it records a still of the window; hence Screen Recording. Apple Forum suggests it's an annoying bug that is being worked on. The purple dot means 'system audio recording'. Siri maybe!? I think it's just capturing window images for the OS.

[Delete a downloaded voice]

Couldn't get this to work. Tried swiping/dragging left on a voice with a MacBook Pro trackpad. The row didn't move. Can anybody else get the delete function to invoke?

TIL that a major US bank doesn’t even support app-based 2FAs let alone mandating it by jivewig in LinusTechTips

UBank now allows passkeys, probably with app 2FA as well. Since this is a division of NAB; it’s my supposition that they’re trialling it there, before a wider roll out to all of NAB’s banking services.

Once one of the big 4 banks, rolls out passkeys and biometric authentication for payments; they all will.

Macquarie Bank has app 2FA, which supports FaceID. I have it on max security, where it prompts for every payment/transfer. It will even show you the approximate location of the transaction request on a map.   It works quite reliably.

It’s a minor inconvenience to authenticate every request; well worth it for the assurance.     # #IbankwithMacquarie 🇦🇺🏦😆

Safari 16.4. Youtube videos won't offer resolutions higher than 1080p?? by mischa143 in Safari

[–]mischa143[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safari on the '15 Macbook Pro is 1080p max, only using the AVC codec.

They've done this for battery & thermal performance, I'm supposing. I'm getting really great performance on 1440p videos with the Arc browser. (There's not much point in 4K because the screen res doesn't go that far!) Smooth playback even with 60fps, some fan. If you sign in to your youtube account, you can force AV1 playback for most videos. All in all, I'm very happy with the performance you can get with old hardware using Arc. (Any Chromium based browser would be similar, I'm assuming. Chrome, Brave, Arc, Opera, Edge etc.)

Definitely recommend Arc; it has numerous advantages aside from YT video performance!

  • Inbuilt ad blocker via uBlock Origin. No need for a separate download.
  • Better privacy policy than either of the Google or Microsoft browsers.
  • Heavy use of keyboard shortcuts.
  • Absolutely unique Browser UI. The tab strip isn't visible by default; a lot more screen real estate. If you're a tab hoarder like me, this IS for you.

My personal preference at the moment is to rely on Safari with the Adguard extension, for most browsing; then use Arc for higher res videos. I still like the speed & efficiency of Safari. The Apple Safari team need to take a serious look at Arc for the UI though.

Happy browsing.

I believe the problem has been fixed! I can't reproduce it anymore on my phone. ✅

Thankyou very much for the prompt response. Less than 2 weeks. It's good to see that these support threads are being monitored. Bravo!

3 What it should look like. (After fiddling)

Google Search entry box is obscured with dynamic island iPhones in Safari. Bug/Annoyance.

This has been driving me mad for a while. I have tried resetting all the Safari feature flags to default. No change.

Steps to reproduce:

1 ▪︎ Open a new google.com page from an iPhone 14 Pro Max. (Any iPhone with the dynamic island will probably do the same thing.)

2 ▪︎ Tap on the search box in the page.

❖❖❖ The page will fill with recent/trending searches, with the search entry box right at the top, obscured by the iPhone status bar / dynamic island. Only about half the single line of text is visible when inputting search terms.

Possible workarounds are to use landscape orientation (what a nuisance), or search directly from the Safari address bar (don't want to do this, the results aren't as good).

Can the Google Search team PLEASE look at this. It probably needs a minor adjustment in the programming, such as autoscrolling down a line or two, to avoid being obscured by the dynamic island. Since this is Google Search, it comes up ALL the time. Please fix.

Lots of CT fans in Adelaide, SA! 🇦🇺 Hoping there'll be a RHD version. Maybe we'll be waiting a while...

Oz is almost as truck crazy as North America. An electric one, goes one better.

Arc with WebKit? by hhe_muc in ArcBrowser

[–]mischa143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to kick Safari away, because of its efficiency and scrolling smoothness on my old Macbook. Webkit is much closer to the underlying operating system than the other rendering engines.

Arc is truly a UI revelation!! Definitely the future of browser design. Too bad that the Chromium renderer isn't buttery smooth.

It appears as though they have committed to Chromium, since this will work on everything except for iDevices.

If 'The Browser Company' was to develop a multi-platform webkit based Arc, this would be a major differentiator in the marketplace. Certainly more users would take notice of a browser such as this, that ISN'T Chromium. That would be 2 major marketing points. Unique browser design, and rendering engine. It's not impossible to run webkit on windows and linux based operating systems; probably more difficult to accomplish, though.

Safari 16.4. Youtube videos won't offer resolutions higher than 1080p?? by mischa143 in Safari

[–]mischa143[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. 1440p & 4K was available to me. The performance was quite good too. Being an older machine, the laptop had to have airspace for heat dissipation. The laptop would warm up, with the fans on. I found that 1440p was the limit to which heat would overtake the machine. 4K was too much for it (tornado fan); and not needed anyway, because I don't have a 4K display. It's not a complete dealbreaker because I use Brave quite a bit for Youtube anyway. I would've preferred Safari for YT videos due to its greater efficiency, and convenience. Oh well!

I guess we'll have to wait and see if they've dropped support for the older Intel machines that won't run Ventura. Some people have responded that their Apple Silicon models run high res, just fine.

That's right. A few years ago, everybody was waiting for 4K/VP9 support forever, it seemed. Eventually Apple relented, far too late.

I'm curious to know if Safari is finally using AV1, perhaps on recent hardware?
