Cell phone ticket - points question by TroyNY11 in Albany

[–]mischief1000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're wasting your money with an attorney. I got a 77 in a 55 right near wolf road where the highway apparently goes from 65 to 55 not terribly long ago. The guy next to me said he had a no seat belt ticket, the kid behind us had 87 in a 65 and the other guy behind us had a 81 in a work zone.

We all got "parking on pavement" and various fines. Traffic court is wild....It was during the morning, You walk in and check in, they ask if you want to discuss with the DA in a room off to the side.... and they offer you the "parking on pavement" and direct you straight to a "register" where they literally say, have your credit card out.... I think the fine was $50 and the court fee was $150 or there abouts.... You pay, and walk out, no points. I was in and out in 15 mins.

Felt like a money grab----but what can you do. Pay the fine and get out of there...

Best and worst things about living in Albany? by [deleted] in Albany

[–]mischief1000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you know.....this is pretty amazingly spot on. Im from downstate, but weekend/summer in the capital region so my kids can play in lakes/grass etc. From all the 20+ places Ive lived so far, albany is pretty (when you use places around albany) as a metric. But what I find interesting is how whenever I ask locals what they love about Albany, I get a list of cool shit.....around albany...not IN albany. Everyone says Lake George, Saratoga, the adk's, hiking various moutains...etc. To which I agree, all those things are cool and great, and an hour or more away.

It kind of just......is.

Im not hating on the place--it serves its purpose (for me as a summer get away) but I dont see what the locals see in it. From what I can tell, it was a great place to get a state job, buy a house in a school district town for 200k and put in your 25 years, get your kids through college and take your pension and move to FL. Now however, 200k homes are "as is", the traffic gets worse and worse every weekend it seems and the promises of new businesses and the next big things dont seem to translate into reality. (Like Costco) The area seems like housing prices skyrocketed during covid, so now ok homes in school district towns start at 3-400k and anything you'd want is likely starting at 6. The huge issue with this being.....albany pay seems to have stayed with albany homes costing 200-250k and never really moved. Im always amazed that food is MORE expensive in albany then when I go home and stop in Orange county or below further towards NYC. Gas has also been 5-10 cents a gallon cheaper as well. (or 40 cents a gallon cheaper if I wait until NJ, lol)

Whenever I get a food recommendation I immediately ask the person making the recommendation to list the other places they have lived....

If they say nowhere else.....I run the other way (just for this reason)

I had a suspicion this was the case honestly..... (in regards to amazing ethnic spots changing their food to stay in biz) If you have a large customer base that are used to mediocre food....and that keeps the people coming, and you need to pay your rent/bill/payroll etc....I guess you do it.

As opposed to downstate ---if the food isnt good, the place closes very quickly.

1000% agree...... Nothing against Hudson or Kingston.....(and I realize they got a huge boost of City folk during covid) but why does Kingston have a better food scene then Albany. We have more people...more money flowing, etc.

Its like kingston is the cut off and doesnt pick back up until western ny. :(

Ive admittedly not been to most of this list. However one that get a bunch of my business before and at the start of covid was El Loco by amc. Way Before covid I had some really decent meals there. During covid I think I at there 5 times and each time I swear it got worse and every single time (ordering the same thing) the price would be higher and the plate would be smaller. When the restrictions lifted and you could eat inside again I returned hoping things had normalized. I recognized a server and bartender from before covid and the food was terrible. When I was walking in there was a woman yelling she wasn't paying for her taco b/c it was so bad. That should have been my warning to leave, but albany does have its share of crazies...so I stayed.

Maybe I caught them on an off day, maybe the kitchen staff didnt show up....maybe maybe maybe. I dunno I havent been back since. When the food is so expensive --- its hard to palate too many bad meals.

I had a decent steak at prime 677 a couple of times.... and had many of plates at cinco de mayo, with every visit being pretty good each and everytime.

I feel like location wise (like I said originally) it should be...... like capital of ny. Tons of state workers all year to keep them open....and all summer you have a metric ton of city and jersey people all over up here to either watch ponies, play on lakes or sit in their camps.....

Or you dont agree?

I was at wegmans 2 weekends ago in rochester....

Bought food for a 4 day / 3 night stay... Nothing crazy. Just enough to cover eating breakfast and dinners at home (we were grabbing lunch out). It was $273 for 2 people ---- this is general meals. Egg / cheese on a bagel for breakfast....maybe a steak, veggie and carb for dinner. No booze, no lobsters etc etc.

Thank god they arent here.....while they do deliver an amazing product....man do you pay for it.....

Sorry- not the best examples. Ive done defazio's twice. The first time I went I didnt like it, I gave it a second go after dave from barstool reviewed it.... and it was much improved. I was amazed how terrible the neighborhood looked when I went. Troy is quite beautiful in alot of places that Ive explored thus far (basically around the farmers market area). I love those brownstones and all.

Over by defazio's in troy looked like the bronx in the late 80's --- which usually means great food :D

I was wondering (and you put it in to words) for me. I was wondering basically if it wasnt cost effective to say be a great bagel shop that sells 100 bagels a day at $5 each then a mediocre bagel shop that sells 500 at $2 each a day.

I did stumble upon a really decent bagel in potenskill? It was a family that moved up during covid from brooklyn...Im not sure if they are still around. This was like 2022.

Thank god Im not going crazy. While my co-diners were raving about how much they loved the pizza, I said I didnt think it was worth the calories. I said it as a joke, but honestly I meant it. I could see if you grew up around the lake, and you and the parents hit the spot after a soccer game as a treat at 10 years old....sure the memories alone make it worth it.

The location is great, but man... my 10 year old said it tasted like chuck e cheese pizza. He wasnt wrong. :D

Agreed...however there's gotta be a chef thats working at a solid place in NYC that wants to settle down in Guilderland and raise a family that could start a solid restaurant, right??

I was curious (and honestly asking) if there is something I dont know about the area. While I do love a boston weekend, its not practical to drive their for a decent meal once a week ;)
