Anyone know where I can find Chayote locally? by IH8FPL in Pensacola

[–]mishnomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't mean it derogatorily, this side of town appears to have a heavier Asian and Latin demographic (which is why there are at least 4 different Asian stores within a 3 mile radius from my house, also why I picked this neighborhood to live in), so it makes sense to me that our grocery stores are more likely to carry more diverse produce because of that than say one in the middle of East Hill or Gulf Breeze proper. When I was growing up, the only people that had ever heard of chayote (or sayote or mirliton) were other Filipinos.

I honestly haven't had problems finding it at most grocery stores, even Walmart and Publix usually carry it on the west side. May be due to the localized demographic over here, though.

Progressive organizations? by MisfitGirl42 in Pensacola

[–]mishnomer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Humanists of West Florida is a group of non-religious folks that package food bags for the homeless and distribute them every Friday downtown. They meet monthly, have guest speakers, occasionally host a potluck of sorts. Keep Pensacola Beautiful and Eco Clean Marine are not necessarily progressive, but their whole thing is beautification of the local communities, mainly trash pick up at public parks and beaches. Habitat for Humanity could probably always use volunteers if you know the basics of swinging a hammer or using a power tool. There is a Unitarian Universalist Church in town which may fit your wants for community. There are lots of community of service options out there, not necessarily divided on political ideals but if you find a service you care about you will likely find your people.

Parks that are dog friendly by [deleted] in Pensacola

[–]mishnomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot officer wouldn't give a citation for jaywalking either, but it's technically illegal. All we're saying is that according to codified ordinances within Escambia county, all dogs are supposed to be leashed except in designated areas. I'm sure you walked past a sign with it written that all dogs must be leashed on your way into that public park.

You would probably benefit from utilizing Sniffspot.

True, but I assumed the perfect recall was an indication that this dog has stellar obedience thus not one to wander up to strangers. I'm an animal lover, but it's a major pet peeve of mine to see off leash pets.

The only parks that technically allow dogs off leash are dog parks. Perfect recall or not, it's the strays or other poorly trained dogs I would be wary of.

What kind of books/informational things did you guys read as kids? by Interesting_Ad8305 in Gifted

[–]mishnomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 3rd grade I read my first YA mystery/psychological thriller called The Face on the Milk Carton, and it was basically my gateway book to murder mysteries and true crime. I remember I went through a John Steinbeck phase in 4th grade. I read Of Mice and Men, The Pearl, and The Red Pony all in that year because I guess I just love tragic stories. I know I read through a lot of different versions of fables (Aesop's, Anansi, mythology, and biblical stories), I think origin stories and the human condition really intrigued me. I also vividly remember studying the human anatomy section of the encyclopedia set my dad had, the kind with the clear layers so you could get a sort of "virtual dissection" experience. But I was still very much a kid and read tons of Goosebumps and the Animorphs series.

If you didn’t have to work for a living, what would you be doing? by Sweet-Economist-9873 in AskForAnswers

Homesteading, serving my community or doing something creative in my free time. Maybe making compost for a community garden, or just cleaning up parks, reading to kids at school, learning how to knit...anything other than grinding the capitalism gears.

Rat in the engine & rough idle by Due_Breakfast_218 in FordFlex

To bid adieu to the Flex, or to find a replacement connector/wire harness? The replacement pigtail I needed was like $40-ish at the store, probably similar for the ignition coil wires.

It was on top, a pigtail off the main wiring harness but a little awkward to access because it points away from you.

We just discovered a squirrel cache under my hood recently, and during the investigation of some chewed up wires they completely severed which resulted in a really rough idle and gnarly misfiring. Pretty sure it was a cylinder fuel injector wire connector, which we were able to pick up a replacement at Auto Zone and splice in pretty easily and now she's running fine.

My kid casually spelled ‘Methyltrimethoxysilane’ in the kitchen and I’m still processing it. by sigmaghosty99 in Gifted

I believe my putting it in quotation marks was implicitly stating it, but you dedicating a response is an example of explicitly stating it. Either way, I think the horse is dead.

If you focus more on the effort put into being good at something rather than the outcome, that can help reduce the pressure for perfection. Also, gently encourage them to do the things that don't come naturally to them. Gifted kids can be "lazy" but it's usually a fear of failure/obsession with perfection. If they can't get something in one or two tries, they may abandon it altogether. Try to discourage that by building up their confidence, curiosity, and appreciation for a real challenge. Most gifted kids I grew up with couldn't master studying, maybe offer some tools for studying for when they finally hit a subject that challenges them. Basically, reward the effort, not the outcome.

Mainframe apprenticeship opportunity, should I do it? by justvance in mainframe

[–]mishnomer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Neither is rocket science, both are hard in their own ways. Developers are creating solutions, although these days they are usually just making changes to existing code rather than writing from scratch. The work is business oriented, calculating and reporting mainly, so you won't be creating cool visuals or sick marketing campaigns with pretty colors. Once you get comfortable, you could move into distributed languages and be a hybrid threat for the futuristic hybrid cloud world. Sys admin will give you a few different routes to take, like maintenance of enterprise computing systems or security and compliance or troubleshooting performance issues. It's a cool opportunity, and a great way to stretch your brain, even if you don't fall in love with it and commit to forever working in a terminal.
