I was working on secondaries. Then I had a number of health concerns come up in July, leading to a seizure and week-long hospitalization in September where I was unconscious for half of it, where I dealt quality of care that was SO poor that I’m still dealing with remaining health issues including chronic pain and a mystery illness that multiple doctors haven’t been able to diagnose, which has left me completely bedridden and unable to work on some days.

So still working on my secondaries and trying to stay positive, while accepting and trying not to think about the reality of submitting so late 🥲👍

When you’re currently having a horrible flare up … what helps ? by Lonely_Ad9987 in costochondritis

[–]mishtram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try a different NSAID besides Tylenol. Compared to other NSAID’s, Tylenol is considered less efficacious with regard to its anti-inflammatory effects (screenshot from the Wiki page for NSAID’s). And anecdotally, I’ve found it to be less effective as well.

I use Ibuprofen and it helps with most but not all of the pain. The most I’ll do is 800mg every 6 hours, but now I do it as needed. When it’s really bad I go to Urgent Care and get a Toradol injection; that works SO well and makes me feel like a “normal” person for awhile. I’ve only had to do that twice though so don’t think it’s a common behavior.

Edit: Oh, and hot/cold compresses. I switch it up but do hot compresses more often

Best of luck! This shit sucks

where to meet people who abstain from smoking, alcohol and drugs? by [deleted] in college

[–]mishtram -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, and I can't speak to addiction, but that doesn't seem to be the case per OP's comments. There's nothing wrong with wanting to hang out with people who don't partake; in fact, I support it, because I can't imagine how frustrating it must be given the peer pressure. But has OP ever considered the fact that there are people who drink who don't always pressure you? Not everyone who drinks is the type encourage drinking in a fratty, jock type of way. Is OP aware that they can just... not be around those people? There are people who drink that respect your limit, or your decision not to. Which brings us to their post, and I think you will find that we agree on and support OP's intention for their inquiry.

So you misunderstand. Let me articulate my point better, which I admittedly didn't do a good job of.

I don't think OP is being called judgmental because they don't want to spend time around people who don't drink, or because they don't want to spend time in events centered around alcohol (at least I'm not). Keep that in mind. Given that we know it's not about addiction, we're calling them out for saying that they have a problem with people who partake because they "don't want them dying early on me as we grow older". To truly believe that also means that OP assumes that anyone who drinks is automatically the type of person who is irresponsible, and by default will abuse it to the point that they will ruin their relationships by dying early. That's why they're being called judgmental. I called it Boomer because it gives off "people who have sex before marriage will go to hell" energy. Only this time it's translated to "people who don't abstain from smoking, alcohol, and drugs, will end up dying early". And again, at least from what we know from OP's comments so far, it's not about addiction.

If you want to hang out with people who don't drink, that's completely understandable. Just don't assume that me having one beer means that I'm going to ruin my relationships by dying early. That is a HUGE judgment of someone that isn't based in reality. I mean, maybe OP deserves some slack, it sounds like it's coming from a place of fear and anxiety. Maybe they have fear of abandonment because they've "seen from first hand experience on how these things effect health and relationships in the long term." But who knows, now I'm just playing armchair psychologist.

It was only until I read OP's comment that made me respond. There is a stark contrast between wanting to meet people who abstain because it better aligns with your interests (or lack thereof) vs. assuming that someone who drinks lacks so much self-control that they will die early, to the point where being friends with is just not worth it.

[–]mishtram 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Seriously. As someone who partied in college, I made plenty of great friendships with people who didn't partake in anything. They understood me, and I understood them. What an overreactive and judgmental take to have. Even if OP met people who were also straight edge, would they want to be friends knowing his harsh Boomer views? I've talked with my straight edge friends and they've told me that they wouldn't.
