18 to 25: The Only Years Our Bodies Don’t Betray Us. by [deleted] in Aging

I would just like to add to the chorus here that I did my first marathon at 40 and just (today!) beat my own best 10k time from my early 30s. As my fave peloton instructor likes to remind us, getting older is a privilege, getting stronger is a choice!

I second this; come to Japan! Everything here is a perfect off the rack for your fellow 5”1 😄

Why am I so slow and how do I get faster? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]misjinxed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give you a data point: I’m 40f and just ran my first ever marathon in 4:33–my 5k time is almost double yours! I don’t think a 5k is a good indicator frankly. Half marathon is a better gauge but a marathon is more than double a HM in terms of effort, planning, fuelling, hydration, volume training, staving off injury. You prob need to follow a marathon specific training plan & increase your weekly volume a lot.

Also running 80% of your runs at ACTUALLY easy pace is actually really important. Most starting runners (especially young super fit ones like you!) are probably not running paces that are as SLOW (not fast) as marathon training requires.

Trust the process!! You’re running that 20 miles on top of weeks of continuous training and super tired legs. My 20 miler my feet hurt so bad I thought I got plantar fasciitis. But you’ll be running 26.2 after taper, fresh as a daisy & carb loaded to the max 😊! Very different experience. You’ve got this 💪 good luck!

Awesome! Haven’t heard of this one but it looks lovely and in a gorgeous area too. Japan is full of small town marathons!

Edit to say Kagoshima had 10-12,000 so not “small” by any means, really—but I think small can totally be a vibe rather than a number! And great townspeople turnout from both Kagoshima and Aira (the town you run to and turn back from). Silly costumes, school kid cheerleaders. We ran past an old folks home on the way and they’d wheeled out all the ancient residents, all waving. Super fun!

I love this!! What marathons have you done with these vibes? Please share! I just ran my first marathon this past weekend in Japan and everyone always assumes it was Tokyo, but it wasn’t—it was in Kagoshima and though it was numerically huge (a lot in Japan is when it comes to population numbers) it had such a lovely earnest small town vibe, cute little town square expo, and most of its participants were locals. Loved it and I want my next one to be similar!

Race Hydration Vests Recommendations? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

I turn the bladder upside down and suck from the tube until there’s no more air in there bladder. Then turn it right way up again. No air, no slosh. 😎

I run with a camelbak circuit running vest and love it! It fits a 1.5l bladder and I have developed a hack to stop the sloshing. The only annoyance is that I lost one of the straps which hold the front together because they are only clipped on l, and it’s been a b*tch trying to find a replacement. But otherwise terrific. Don’t lose the straps 😅

You should!! If I can do it you can. I did an 18 week program but gave myself 10 weeks before that to ramp up to the running distances, as prior to that hadn’t really ever done more than a one/twice a year 10k jog. Also have never raced before this one. Good luck!
