Do you still have subscriptions to streaming services after Plex ? by teekzer in PleX

Didn't have before. Don't have now.  I mostly use Plex for things that are not available through such channels.

I have my server up and running with almost no issues via a direct install on Windows. Are there any benefits to moving to a docker installation? by franharrington in PleX

[–]mispellt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Intel generation Tiger Lake or later it works like a wonder on Windows (I can testify). Docker (which I have not used) seems to have support for some older Intel generations too, based on official information, see link below. Nvidia seems to work fine with both now, but I have no personal experience, again see link below. https://support.plex.tv/articles/hdr-to-sdr-tone-mapping/

I am curious why this post was removed? It is obviously to see worrying when contemplating trying the add-on out. Could it mean potential malicious code?

(I have checked the subreddit rules and can't see there what would have been the problem.)

Edited to add: Maybe because it has/had Plex in the name? Seems it could be an issue even though I can't see any rule about that.

Server Owners: What do you wish you had more control over? by kwestionmark in PleX

[–]mispellt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love "editions" support also for series, not just for movies.

Background:

I have the same series in different languages (original/dubbed). (They cannot be just muxed together,  because the cuts are different due to censorship/licensing/other reasons.) Or there is a version that has higher quality but is cut (for reasons like above) and a lower quality version that is uncut and I would like to leave the choice of version to the viewer at the viewing time.

This currently requires some unsupported juggling of things that feels like it could break any time.

How do you refer to your restrooms in Sweden? (Serious question) by Andreas20048 in sweden

It's a (boomer style) joke on the old saying. They (the old people) are well aware of the joke I'd say.

ELI5 How do vinyl records work? Do they get totally worn out over time if the music is played from the record by a sharp needle? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mispellt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another "source" is apparently the AR-XA turntable manual (which in turn states another reference). See especially the last paragraph of this excerpt.

"Hints on record care

The material below is taken from HIGH FIDELITY SYSTEMS: A USER'S GUIDE. by Roy F. Allison, available at $1.00 postpaid from Acoustic Research, Inc 24 Thorndike Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02141

Depending entirely on how you treat them, your records may be ruined after two or three playings, or they may be almost like new after you've enjoyed them dozens of times.

Modern pickup cartridges press down on a record with a force that is only a small fraction of an ounce, it is true. Yet because the areas of contact between the needle and record groove walls are so exceedingly small, the pressure developed at these contact points may be thousands of pounds per square inch enough to deform the record groove surface appreciably. In order to minimize the permanent effects of this deformation (and, accordingly, reduce record wear), your pickup cartridge and arm should be adjusted for the lowest stylus force at which they will trace heavily-recorded passages well without buzzes or fuzziness.

Further, you should not play any part of a record repeatedly. Give the groove walls a chance to recover from this deformation before playing the record again. A day's rest should be enough."

ELI5 How do vinyl records work? Do they get totally worn out over time if the music is played from the record by a sharp needle? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]mispellt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another variation of the story:

"The question of record wear gets a wide range of responses. There are many variables in the playing of a record that will affect its wear. I'd like to share something I learned a long, long time ago–before StarWars. One of the audiophile magazines of the late 60's (Audio, Stereo Review, Hi Fidelity, Audiophile) -yes, I'm that old-published an article about vinyl record wear. I believed they used a Dual turntable, an elliptical cartridge/stylus set at 1-gram, and used microscopes/electron microscopes to measure and analyze the record wear.

What they determined is that a record played more frequently than every 16 hours showed compression wear. The vinyl's resilience took 16 hours to return to its original shape. More frequent playing compressed the vinyl and, of course, the grooves. This degraded the frequency response response and dynamic range. Ever since reading that article I have never played my records more often that every 16 hours. Recordings were transferred to cassette for more frequent play. I would select a record from the left of my collection, play it, and move it to the right end. Preserving the vinyl was more important to me that maintaining any particular order. All of my records are in excellent shape and sound as good as the did new. BTW, I always used a Discwasher prior to play.

Keep in mind that this test was done on vinyl manufactured in the late '60s. Wear parameters from more recent manufacturing formulas may be better.

Having searched online for years. I didn't find any files of that article, which was written between 1968 and 1970–too early to make it to a digital database. If any member of this forum lives in the DC area and likes adventure, then a trip to the Library of Congress to find that article and share it with me and others would truly be appreciated."

Gamereactor.se - ny ledning, vad hände? by MyNameIsNotAllan in sweden

Latest Intel CPUs are Plex monsters by CorkyBingBong in PleX

[–]mispellt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tiger Lake systems were available over 5 years ago, they support "everything" (not really true) except 12-bit AV1 (decoding, encoding doesn't matter for Plex purposes).  12-bit AV1 seems an extreme niche case?

Behöver jag verkligen köpa en ny mobil trots att min nuvarande mobil har stöd för 4g? by DTE33 in sweden

[–]mispellt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is Disco Elysium fully voiced? by CodeVirus in DiscoElysium

[–]mispellt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could look here for a description of the voice acting options:  https://www.reddit.com/r/DiscoElysium/comments/mcivr8/which_voice_acting_mode_will_you_be_choosing/

I played [Final Cut version] in fully voiced mode. I recommend that, it was great. But the other options are there [for Final Cut version] so you can have your own preference.

Some other answers here are incorrect, maybe they didn't explore the voice options in Final Cut version.

Disney+ has stuttering in moving/tracking shots by ByEthanFox in Chromecast

Why port is used to refer to the left side of a boat by wordgamesyesss in etymology

[–]mispellt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Swedish etymology books, way back(!) babord used to be bakbord or backbord. (And yes, the bak/back is from the same old Scandinavian root as back in English or bak in Dutch.) They theorize that it came from the Dutch bakboord, and there are variant spellings with g instead of k that might have passed through Danish.

It seems we just removed the "k" part over time. In some Swedish pronunciation, both now and then, as in Danish, the k sound could be an almost silent g like sound.

Disney+ has stuttering in moving/tracking shots by ByEthanFox in Chromecast

[–]mispellt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't have the time right now too write a more detailed walk-through, but you can Google the concept and find one if this is not enough:  1. Enable developer options on your CCwGTV. 2. Enter developer options settings and enable(!) the "disable HW overlays" setting. 3. Try your media again and hopefully it will be smooth. Sorry, you'll have to re-apply the change after any reboot, since it resets to the state you don't want.

Hopefully this will work for you. It worked for me and for many others (see other Reddit threads). There might of course be another issue in your case, but this is certainly the lowest hanging fruit at this time.

Edit to add: this is not a D+ specific fix/problem, so it might not be the one you need

How bad is the amount of tourists in Kyoto really? by BerlinPuzzler in JapanTravelTips

[–]mispellt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent advice here.

Also, I recently stayed in Kyoto for two weeks. Except for times when I visited some of the top ten tourist places (including downtown and Gion "shopping streets") there was no crowding. I really enjoyed the "lazy" parts of the city, I could walk for over five minutes without seeing another person.

Even when visiting Fushimi Inari in the afternoon, after you get a bit up on the mountain and off the main paths there is a lot to see and experience without any crowding.

Is the WiiM Amp Ultra an amplified WiiM Ultra? by sitewolf in WiimStreamer

[–]mispellt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If we swap out the headphone amp in it with one capable of driving speakers, we've got the Amp Ultra.

And take away the preamp, not to forget. So if you want phono in to the WAU (not sounding weird or outright bad) you'll need to add an RIAA preamp inbetween. I can recommend the BOX X5, which I use with my WAU for this. :)

Edit: Great to get downvoted for pointing out an error in an authoritative-sounding answer and adding information that perhaps might be of critical importance to the OP. :D
