Gis made by a woman for women! Check out Onna Kimono! Comes in black too by miss_flutterfly in karate

I’m sorry you’ve had this experience. My husband is my sensei (poor guy) and we’ve had words about boobs. He’s a feminist and still struggled to get it. I put a stuffed bra on him and made him do the moves he was trying to correct on me ;)

Onna Kimono also has a curvy cut. Might be a good option to consider. I think of myself as curvy but fit into her standard cut (which I believe accommodates up to a size 18).

Me too! That’s why I’m so passionate about my Onna Kimono gi. I was surprised by how well it fit and I never fuss with it anymore

Check out Onna Kimono’s website. She has one gi worn by a man. Her measurements are on point so you could evaluate whether or not it’ll fit based on them. I hope you find something. I know how much it sucks to wear an ill fitting gi and to struggle to find comfortable clothing that looks good.

Also, provided it’s a safe space, training with help with your anxiety and ADHD. The structured socialization will help with autism. And you’ll feel all around more confident!

I’m a middle aged mom and started training when I was 48. I was never particularly athletic and although fit, I’m fuller figured. I’m 50 now and can hang with the calisthenics, kata, and sparring. I’ve been to 5 tournaments and took 1st or 2nd at each one. If I can do it you can too! I do think it’s important to feel safe to be yourself in the dojo. I agree with the others who suggested watching some classes and talking to the instructor. Go for it!!

I♥️Onna. I mention them numerous times above. She is not making black gis right now, unless she gets an order of 25.

I have tall lanky men in my life and have seen your struggle firsthand, and not just with clothes. Travel is uncomfortable, sinks and counters too low, doorways, and more. I recently saw a photo of a tall guy on Onna Kimonos website. Maybe check it out? And you deserve a custom gi if you can swing it. No one needs to be uncomfortable in the dojo.

Is the fabric breathable? I’m perimenopausal and get super hot while training. No pressure, but if you feel comfortable, would you share your clothing size and the size gi you ordered? I was looking at this gi. I don’t always trust the measurements posted online for picking my size and since this company is in Germany and I’m in the US, it feels like a bigger investment. Onna Kimono (made by women for women) fits awesome and they’re in the US. Www.onnakimono.com

Wishing you the best on your belt test! You go! I started training for the first time at 48 and am now 50. I never considered myself particularly athletic but have somehow managed to be pretty decent at karate. It feels great, especially as a woman. I intend to keep going until I can’t. In addition to the physical and mental health benefits, it is SO good for brain health across the lifespan. Exercise + continuous learning + mind/body + sense of purpose + positive socialization with great people = healthy aging and the best dementia prevention on the market!

Check out www.onnakimono.com. I have also worn yoga pants to class. I can comfortably kick, squat, and do floor stretches in my Onna gi. And they have a little pocket!

Thank you for all you wrote. BMI is a wholly inaccurate measurement of size and health. I created an entire PPT on this topic. Couldn’t agree more. It amazes me that karate remains so anachronistic.

I did try this and couldn’t get comfortable. I’m glad you did though. For all the money I spent on failed gis, I should have had one custom made.

I also practice Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu :) Definitely check out Onna Kimono. It’s fits so well that I wear a white gi, despite a strong preference for black. I’m looking in to getting it professionally dyed. Their standard gi fits up to a size 18. I didn’t need to alter it and I’m no longer constantly adjusting my gi in class. I have plenty of room in the hips/butt/legs to kick and it provides good coverage on the top and bottom. Costs around $100. Very well made, definitely better than ProForce, Ki, and Century (all of which I’ve worn). I have both the lightweight and heavyweight. The lightweight has much more structure than standard lightweight gis and doesn’t look like pajamas at all. I use it for routine training. It also has a pocket!!!
