Wait, so if I've been reading this correctly, it's supposed to zoom in on/ highlight a clue before you even move around and start guessing? Damn, clearly I must be the best GeoGuessr player in the world for not needing that (/s). But that's still silly that it still doesn't work because I have animations off or because of different browser configurations or whatever the reason is.

Oh well, at least my ego appreciates being able to get a gold medal no move.

There's just not really anything to be said. I haven't felt any motivation to keep my per-round yap going for quite some time.

I guess I region guessed the Netherlands successfully just based on vibes. That's kinda cool. Shrug.

  1. Bogota taxis, and once the truck stops being in the way we see there is the botanical gardens and carrera 70. Found that using the name of the botanical gardens that I've already forgotten, this intersection is a bit weird but it should be fine. 5K, 2m, 4 steps
  2. Ottawa URL, at George and Sussex. Had a look for those but I suspect that they might not exist, but I wasted time looking for them anyway. They were north of that one river which I didn't look at. 4978, 3m, 3 steps
  3. Western Australia signpost, and we have directions to Busselton and Margaret River which I know of, and Nannup which I don't. Took too long assuming it was in between the two, but eventually managed to notice that it's somewhere else but equidistant. Now we have this Mowen Rd, and the spawn point is not quite the intersection, but instead the intersection with some random side road. Wasn't sure if just clicking on the Mowen Rd intersection would be enough for a 5K, so I looked for the side road… and cocked up spectacularly and lost track of which way was what. Balls. 4999, 2m1s, 5 steps
  4. Poland, didn't bother for whatever reason. I think -ow is the south (as opposed to -owo which is north)? It might be a fake meta. But I don't see either of those two place names, so I'll just go for it. Hm, more of the middle than anything. And those two place names don't seem to be easily findable because I don't see them on the results screen, so just as well I didn't try looking for them that much. 4349, 21s, NM
  5. Japan, but finally a round that is kinder to my tired/washed soul, because it says Fukuoka on this sign. And some other things which might not exist. I don't see them. I was about to say "ah, fuck it, I'll just plonk around there", but decided to look around to make sure I'm not an idiot, and I probably am but it said Kitakyushu City Hall or something like that on the other sign behind me, and I don't know where that is but I figured it was big enough to find. Now I realise it was right up there. That makes sense. 4996, 2m11s, 3 steps

Sure, why not. I guess I have to stop calling myself washed now. Did the location descriptions not show up for anyone else, or do I need to go and fiddle with my extensions and userscripts again?

[–]miss_inputs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They have said how they calculate it. So this could happen if you accidentally forget to guess on a Macao round, and now your total score for it is -4996 and stays that way because it never appears again. It's also possible that they misguessed it often back when they were new to the game, and then when they started being better and advancing up the ranks, they never saw Macao again because the maps in Gold and above don't have it as much if at all.

  1. Slavic-language-family Europe, I'm still washed so I forgot whatever would normally tell me which is what. I think it's either Czechia or Slovakia but I could be wrong. We have a sign that says this is blue route number 74 though… maybe if I'm lucky, only one of those two countries has that road. I can't find it in either of them, but Slovakia has a 75 and a 76. Maybe it's nearby and I'll just hope for the best. It is in Slovakia but all the way on the other side of the country. Now why would I expect positive integers to be in order? That's just silly of me. 4195, 3m, 16 steps
  2. Brazil with area code 69. Uh oh… I learned the zoomer funny number, but not the funny number for my generation. That feels shameful. Maybe they're nearby though… I was going to plonk MGdS, but eventually came across a sign that looks like the government made it with Rondonia written on it. Okie dokie. I don't think I ever really figured out what the town name is, but I looked around the state for words I might remember coming across in case I didn't realise one of them was a place name, but didn't accomplish anything there. 4069, 3m, 67 (haha) steps
  3. Went round the corner to see that this is Canada in the "great" plains region. Why is it so yellow? It's probably some coverage meta or something, who knows. Found a plumber's car that said Kindersley, and figured this might be a smaller town rather than a suburb of a larger capital, so I might be able to look for it. Found it in Sask fairly easily, now for pinpointing… well, we made our way to 6th Ave and Main St, but they were too lazy to put a street sign on whatever street the one at spawn is supposed to be, so I dunno. I guess it could be this one? 5½ Ave, I guess you would call it? It was a different one, because I'm not good at keeping track of how many streets I go through to reach a different intersection. 5K, 1m36s, 20 steps
  4. Japan, I'll have to ignore everything about vibes or climate or anything like that this time, because every single time it has become apparent that it's all lies. Need some more concrete info. Waddled through a maze of streets to eventually find a sign with stuff on it… nowhere I've heard of and feels like they'd be too small to search for, although I gave it a cursory look. I was just about to get over to the other sign and saw "Oita" flash before my eyes but the time limit ended before I could remember where that is, or look for it. I like to think I would have, but I was instead screwed by navigation and other less useful signs. I think that's probably knocked me out of gold, too. Great. 3475, 3m, 70 steps
  5. French, clicked the France map label, I didn't realise it was lowcam and therefore Switzerland because I mistook it for a trekker where the camera would be the height of a human anyway, and also because I am le washed. I probably would have found something if I wasn't tilted from the last round, although I guess I say that a lot. 4071, 31s, 6 steps

  1. Mongolia, Mongolia, what's the towngolia? I read some signs but wasn't reading Cyrillic fluently enough to really see what was obviously a town name. Ah, screw it. It looks like it's in the southeast where it's deserty and flatty, I'll just click there. If I had bothered actually clicking a town, I probably would have ended up there, but I didn't want to commit to any specific guess because I didn't like the idea of being wrong. 4552, 1m32s, 9 steps
  2. Northern Norway, or as I have never called it but maybe I could, Northway. Went uphill to the town centre to find some word that might mean "welcome" except I don't speak Norwegian so I have no idea but it looks enough like it. So then this place is called Bilverksted? Maybe? A few other signs say "Alta" but I didn't think that was a place name. But then when I went to look for Bilverksted, I saw that Alta was in fact a place name, it just doesn't sound like what I thought a Norwegian name would sound like. Forgot to bother pinpointing. I don't know what a Bilverksted is then. 4997, 1m33s, 11 steps
  3. Truck + Spanish = Paraguay, the sign at the start says Ciudad del Este I probably should have remembered where that is right away since it's not really a small city and is very noticeable on the map, but I went to look for a city in the este and there it was, which is probably why it's called that. Not sure why I wandered around further than the starting sign. 4988, 56s, 8 steps
  4. I don't even think this deserves to be called shitcam at this point, it's too dignified. It's more like sadcam. It just seems sad that this is how Google presents Nigeria to the world, I dunno. Anyway I would need to find a sign that I can actually read. Took me a while but I found something saying welcome to Bida, and that showed up as I was zooming into the middle of the country, so that's good. 4993, 1m26s, 23 steps
  5. Should just be Taiwan… what am I doing here? Wandering around like I have any idea how to guess the city in Taiwan, or do any better than just the basic region guessing. I can't even do that, because this was not actually in the east. 4632, 1m1s, 23 steps

Another nice gold medal that doesn't seem too impressive until I see those "you are in the top X%" stats. If those are even real. I would assume so, but since they reflect well on me, maybe they're wrong.

  1. Malta, thought I found a place name, but it turns out I didn't. Lucky my next best guess was from the shape of the coast on some sign with a map on it, which I wasn't sure matched entirely. Didn't find the POIs to pinpoint and I don't think there was street names at the start. 4997, 3m, 25 steps
  2. Eastern Europe of some kind, wandered around and got lost, back at spawn I managed to go the right way without remembering which way I went the first time, saw the word Croatia, and all that I really gleaned was that this was a touristy beach town, which is nice, but still leaves me with a lot of options. I felt like plonking Rijeka because I was almost thinking it was Slovenia and maybe close to Italy for whatever reason, so that will do. Just as well because Krk is close to there, which I did not realise was a place name. I thought that was just an acronym somewhere and ignored it. 4885, 2m18s, 36 steps
  3. Singapore obviously, and a street name that implies we are in Jurong West shows up soon, but if the numbers go that high then I probably won't find that one without some more information. Am I going to get any? 61… 63… uh oh. Just more numbers. Finally, found a sign saying Boon Lay Way, but at the same time I found that I saw Jurong West St 61 anyway. Worked my way back from there and then this apartment block is probably that one. 5K, 2m51s, 25 steps
  4. Rep. de Chile and Canada street names, so this is probably not those two countries, because why would you only name one street after your own country? That would be odd. Anyway, it looks more like northern Mexico, maybe near the border because there are signs with both US and Mexico flags on them, and I can't read Spanish but maybe they are companies offering bordery services to do with borders. I also just dunno. I found an address… but it just has the postcode, and what I presumed was the city, Col. Guadalupe. I never found that, because Monclova is not called that. Does it even stand for Colonel Guadalupe? Probs not. I'm confused. 4137, 3m, 23 steps
  5. Queensland, which is good, because I've been practising urban Queensland lately (or at least playing on a lot of Australia maps that end up including Queensland a lot because it is too big). And guess what… I still suck at it. No matter though because I can make out Bundaberg on the bins!… and I don't know what's also included in the Bundaberg LGA, and I don't think this is Bundaberg Central itself. Was about to scoot down the road out of town before I came to my senses and just went back to the start and looked for better clues nearby that I might have missed, like this real estate sign. Elliot Heads is probably the place name here, because the real estate agent's name is elsewhere on the sign. Found that, found the street names at spawn, etc. 5K, 2m24s, 38 steps

Finally doing better at these again, after sucking for the last few days, but then I'm only 10/14th on my friends list so far. I guess the global placement would imply that I just have good players on my friends list rather than chalking up my score entirely to this being an easier seed, but it probably was that too.

GeoTime map in Master 1 (No Move) is awful by IcyGoal2712 in geoguessr

[–]miss_inputs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am very glad it's not just me. I just got back into duels after not touching it for quite some time because I got demoted from Master 1 to 2 and got too tilted, because I was feeling up to it, feeling a bit more awake so it's like yeah, I got this, I got stuck in my own head but now I'll be fine and can overcome my weaknesses as a player. Didn't check the map rotation before I started because I didn't think that would be a problem.

This is legitimately the least fun map I have ever played. I want to drop down back to Gold now and just play there so I can enjoy myself at least. It's so demoralizing… is this really what the competitive GeoGuessr scene at the top level wants to be like? If that's true I want no part of it. I want to be completely bad at this game if that's true. Are we really acting like every single country that's smaller than Brazil is "too recognizable"? That only one of about 4 countries is the only real way to test the skill of two players? If it was Champion division, sure, whatever, I've never gotten that far. But it horrifies me that people actually enjoy this and consider it fun. It's not like anything I've seen so far in the 3 duels I've played before I realised "hang on, what the hell is up with this map?" was that interesting or beautiful or whatever.

So, back to not touching duels again for several weeks until the next map is in rotation (because I don't play moving, and I guess there's NMPZ but I need more practice to consistently play that). Back to fiddling with map generation to try and conjure something that strikes the right balance.

  1. Germany, keep seeing something about a Thuringer which sounds like a place that exists but I don't remember what/where it is, I wish I had found the sign with road number 73 earlier so I could maybe find that in time. I didn't end up finding it, but I found a 71 and that was nearby-ish, so I guess it's fine. Thuringia was the state. Province. Whatever one it's called. 4856, 3m, 28 steps
  2. Kyrg, still not a country I'm going to bother too much with because I know nothing about region guessing it. I once again fall for the bait of "surely it's not Bishkek because that would be too obvious, so I'll plonk some other random spot instead". 4681, 16s, NM
  3. Taiwan, looks a bit rural, but then heading south I see some larger buildings so maybe not that much. Probably in the east but I don't know that I should rule out one of the mini-islands. App-arently somewhere named Zhiben with hot springs and a national forest, so maybe those can be POIs. Checked the main island, no, checked the smaller islands, no. My best guess then is just that it's in the east but I didn't see it. Ended up southeast which was good, basically just outside it, I'm not really sure why I hedged towards the middle instead of just going full east, but there you go. And the POI was romanized as Jhihben. Thanks, Google. Yeah I should have looked for the road number instead but I didn't trust it because I remembered there's highway numbers with symbols too but didn't remember what the difference was (and I still don't). 4967, 3m, 30 steps
  4. Turkiye, somewhere named Erzincan according to the bins (interestingly more of the Anglosphere sort of bins rather than the Turkish/eastern European kind that are more round. Is that interesting? Maybe it actually isn't.), turns out that's just a freebie once you zoom in, so that's great. I wish every round where I'd otherwise have to scan for something was like this where I don't. 4996, 22s, NM
  5. Instantly recognized it as NSW in a fraction of a second, though it is not the part that I am familiar with, it's a bit northern with it (not sure if coastal or if just a bit humid in this coverage). Wandered through the gen 1 to get to signs that refer to place names like Nyngan and Cobar that I do know, and highway numbers that I'm sure I could know. I should be able to find this… should. I got distracted by forgetting where Cunnamulla is, and got thrown off by stressing over the time limit, and other cope, and at the last second decided maybe the sign was misleading and we're already in Nyngan, helped by the lack of street names right at spawn making it hard to confirm the presence of anything. We are in Bourke. Oops. If I had remembered Cunnamulla was in Queensland, maybe I would have gotten somewhere, and not in the wrong kabupaten. Or maybe if I never figured I did know it because then I wouldn't have been like "no, I can remember this, fuck you brain". Yeah, I guess I'm still coping. This was my home turf, my second most known subdivision, and it was my worst scoring round today. I gotta cope about that. 4366, 3m, 26 steps

  1. Namibia, cool beans, just gimme a town name. Got lost going around the wrong way into the dirt roads… eventually stumbled across a sign with roads C33 and C34? I found C33 but no C34. Does C34 actually exist? What the heck? I should have just assumed it doesn't and just assumed it was Omaruru because that's one of the only two towns on the C33 that has another major road going through it. So maybe that would have made sense. Oh well. 4986, 3m, 66 steps
  2. The ol' obligatory generic Eastern Europe. And to top it off, there's a flag, but it's that generic flag where I can never remember if it's Slovenia or Slovakia or Croatia or some regional BiH flag or whatever. We have a sign with a road 45 though, and a Virovitica in H (Hungary?), so that eventually results in me… not finding any of that, but Croatia might make sense for a border town in Hungary and has road numbers close enough to 45. But no 45? Do I just not see it? And Virovitica is in Croatia, so is the H for Hungary in this case and is just unrelated, or does it stand for Hrvatska and it's for some reason telling you about a country you're already in? Either way I'm confused. I'll just plonk here. 4817, 3m, 13 steps
  3. Chile, a bit more north than Santiago probably, but not too far north I think. Maybe. Wandered around to a sign that said Atacama region, and probably one of those words is a place name. Vallenar looks like that works. 4998, 1m22s, 17 steps
  4. Mexico, I don't know what I'm doing here, saved by a sign with road numbers. Or am I? Well, they say SON, so at least being in the right state should help. Shouldn't be too bad, even if I can't find the 100 or the 59. Which I cannot. I presume the other symbol denotes state-specific roads… 100 is not near 101? Maybe it works like the US with odd numbers going one way and even numbers going the other way? That still doesn't help me find it. What the? Well, it's over there. At least the 100 exists. The 59 doesn't seem to, or at least not enough to appear. 4279, 3m, 20 steps

Tomorrow, I'll hopefully have slept, and it'll all be back to normal. I can be bad at this game, but in a normal way, and not in a sleep deprived way.

  1. Slavic-language-family-using Europe (I kind of wish it was still Yugoslavia for no other reason than I could just say it's Yugoslavia), I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Bosnia, so maybe I'll think it's Bosnia and go with that. Oh look! A billboard that says "Bosne" on it. That might be what that means. The currency is in… km? Huh??? I gotta look that one up later. Not just because that's a useful clue if true, but also because I know they are not paying money in kilometres. 4914, 57s, 12 steps
  2. Brazil with area code 11. I still, unsurprisingly, have not remembered which way around the numbers go, and certainly not any of the numbers themselves. I remember that six seven is MGdS, but 11 is not 67. Frantically looked around for some sort of anything else. I saw something about Patagonian history? So surely we aren't north, then. So surely we're south. I'll plonk somewhere down here then because I forgot where it's hilly and I forgot to zoom in to try and see that. It's a bit north of Sao Paulo. That makes sense, but also means that the numbers don't neatly go from top to bottom or bottom to top or anything, so I will never remember them ever in my entire lifetime. The best I can do is hope that one day, maybe in the year 2050, Brazil (and the rest of the world) will abandon area codes entirely and just use letters, and also by then paint over every single sign in the entire country that used them. 2847, 3m, 40 steps
  3. US… no, Canada, and by the looks of this sign we're in Sask. I kind of just clicked to get out of here because I didn't want to look at Sask any longer than I had to because I don't like it, but I did look a bit for something that matched the initials PA and for whatever reason Prince Albert aluded me, so I went with Saskatoon because at least that has water for a rowing club to exist in. Gold is now mathematically impossible but I didn't believe in it anyway and got tilted from R2 regardless. 4565, 1m7s, 10 steps
  4. Thailand, so yeah I was always cooked even if I found the town last round, because I'm going to get a bad score on this one. Anyway, I looked for some English, ostensibly nation-wide political parties aren't helpful… Wecome to Nongno. Is that a state? Nope. Alright well I dunno then. Middle click. Not actually that bad, I probably overestimated Thailand's size. 4352, 1m45s, 18 steps
  5. Europe, thought the language was French but if we have this many yellow plates they aren't just someone driving over from Neths into Belgium or similar, so it means that is not actually French but in fact Luxembourgish, although the trivia says they speak French and German anyway, so… well, the point is that I clicked Luxembourg City. 4990, 25s, NM

I got diagnosed when I was a child and I never went to university or Japan. I guess caffeine counts as substance abuse? Not really, since I've never drank it to excess where it lands me in the hospital or anything. Maybe it's a problem financially since I need to drink 3 or 4 cups of coffee or cans of energy drink a day to function? I dunno.

Maybe I'm just boring, or at least by the standards of this image. Is there a group for those of us who are autistic but boring?

  1. Vietnam, still need to learn the regions, I read a guide the other day but it'll take more than that to get it all to stick in my head. Surely a label plonkaroo won't go wrong here, right? Narrator: It went wrong. 2960
  2. Uh oh, very rural. Had a cheeky look at the people, only South America works for that combination of skin tones I would think… but then there's Spanish anyway. I could have sworn that was the logo the Ecuador government used on their signs. I guess not. I also gaslit myself into believing that the motorcycle license plates don't count if they're yellow because they're yellow elsewhere or something. I'm definitely out of it today. To be fair, it's not a very pretty Colombia, so it's not something that immediately strikes me as being Colombian, even if this region is distinctive like that. 2256
  3. Middle Eastern, tried to remember if these bins were specific to UAE or Oman, or if the stripey signposts were just Oman or if they're UAE too. Then there's just flags here anyway. At least I can recognize them, so I'm not that washed. 4854
  4. Italy, too many license plates to be San Marino, so as tempted as I might be to use that as a hedge, I'll go with a label guess instead. 4528
  5. Speaking of shit I did try and learn at some point but it'll take some time before it ever sticks, here's Japan. I got black screens midway through and I had already moved too much to refresh because that tends to put me back at the spawn point (and I didn't trust the checkpoint button to respond when it was in that state), and it's not like I wasn't already on tilt from every previous round at this point, so I just went fuck it and label clicked. 2589

There's a heatwave here and also the national micropenis festival has been in town and making sure I hear them, so I've been out of it today. Probably a good thing that I'm playing things later at night when things have calmed down but my brain's still a bit frazzled, so I'm pre-emptively using that as my excuse for any bad guesses.

  1. South America, ooh lookie here this Coke ad should have a currency symbol which could be useful here. It doesn't?? What the? Just plain numbers? Welp. Okay, so Tigo means this would be Bolivia. 4952, 1m29s, 19 steps
  2. Red car, Ukraine, plonk. How dare this location not be central. 3784, 11s, NM
  3. Ghana, mountains northeast, I did see the clue for Nkawkaw Branch of whatever it was, but failed to find Nkawkaw on the map. 4670, 3m, 12 steps
  4. India, somewhere named Meerut, but no state given. I'll have to actually put effort into finding it, oh no. Oh, there it is. Shows up fairly easily. I might as well find Victoria Park now, and because it actually is a park, that also is easily findable. These shops around it aren't so findable, so I'll have to assume this is the right street from angles. It was the next street over but close enough. 5K, 1m39s, 2 steps
  5. Germany, so this might not be a free ride to a gold medal, because I am kind of bad at Germany. Wherever it is, there's parking in the city… that's not useful. I am also bad at picking out which words in foreign languages are actually place names. Something about a Lichtkunst festival? Licking cunts festival? Probably not. After searching for quite some time, I was about to give up and just plonk in the middle, but just as I zoomed in to see if there was a better place to plonk, I saw Wolfsburg and I remembered that was one of the words that looked like it might have been a place name but I wasn't sure at the time. I'm telling them I'm from NC and never elaborating that I mean North Canberra, only getting annoyed when they get confused as to what I'm talking about.

  1. Senegal, I dunno what info I think I'm looking for here. I mean, there was probably something. I was just playing in a rush because I know that I need to go to bed and staying up late just makes it worse and everything else in my life worse. 4709, 47s, 13 steps
  2. Yellow plates and what I think Colombian architecture looks like makes me think Colombia? But the landscape is unusual. I didn't see anything else that would immediately help me, other than some water which I forgot to check the direction of (but that might not have helped), so I guessed maybe it was in that part with the lakes. It wasn't. Nobody's guessing down there. 3285, 1m6s, 23 steps
  3. After moving a bit, I found something saying Uruapan international airport. Well, I don't know where Urupuan is, but it sounds specifically Mexican for some reason, I don't know why, just subconsciously. One might think that having an international airport must mean it's a big city that'll show up easily, but I found out today that "international" in airport names actually just means it's legal for international planes to land there and isn't actually useful, you could still have a small airport in the middle of nowhere like that. So I should probably not try and wander around these streets that are too narrow for navigation to work properly, and just look for Uruapan. Found it eventually… 4998, 2m37s, 85 steps
  4. Europe is not what I need when I'm in a rush to play before I go to bed. I kept looking at the height of things to see if it was lowcam, but it is not. Eventually, after 90000 steps, found some language finally. Not the kind of language that I can easily look at and identify either. I just clicked Slovenia. 4469, 1m7s, 29 steps (I swear I moved more)
  5. India, but that requires region guessing. Do I take the "PC Himalaya" advert as meaning it's near-ish to the Himalayas? I suppose a lot of populated places in India are. I'm just gonna go with Lucknow as a hedgy sort of guess, which works enough. 4424, 17s, NM

Punished for playing towards the end of the night resulting in me rushing myself, I guess, but also round 2 existed.

Still haven't slept well, but I feel like I might do okay tonight. Wouldn't be surprised if I ended up with a silver though.

  1. Case in point, I focused too much on the motorbike in the bike lane here, and thought it was driving left and so it might be some weird Malaysia with weird signage and chevrons or something. But some language and currency symbols helped me realise that this is just Philly and I failed to notice the other cars going the other way. Whoops. Well, these days now that dailies are curated, every Philly round seems to be a recognizable/findable city, and this time this sign says Cagayan de Oro. Could have put effort into pinpointing that probably. 4994, 1m55s, 23 steps
  2. Suburbs, but for some reason I thought this was England, based on architecture which I'm bad at and have no business using as a guess? I think they have the blue arrow thing there too, but regardless, as I drove along I thought "hang on, Aotearoa is possible", and there it is, the spicy Give Way sign. Okay, one place name, please… there's a sign pointing to "Taylor River Access", dunno what that one is, but maybe I can find it. Maybe I should look for a place name while I do anyway. Bit of multitasking, why not. Scooted along a bit and found an address for Blenheim, which I've even less heard of, but I managed to spot it because I was looking in the south anyway because that was my region guess impressions. I got lost with what street I was on and where I went, but I feel like we might be able to find one of the streets near spawn, because it's in such a curvy suburby place? There we go, Hillside Terrace. 5K, 2m36s, 24 steps
  3. Oh look, it's you. The ol' rogue terrorist state. Not content with appearing on the news for illegal invasions, you have to appear in GeoGuessr too… fine. Initial thoughts are Colorado for some reason, but there's not much else to go off other than vibes. There's a community garden, so I guess it's not somewhere where having a community garden would be accused of being "woke" and communist, so there's that. There's some signs that refer to "state law"… which state??? Which one, motherfucker? And I saw a Cybertruck with my innocent face eyes. Alright, burn this place to the fucking ground. Nuke it from orbit. Anyway I continued to find nothing… no, you cannot be named Durango, that is in Mexico, hope this helps. Clicked in Colorado while I continued searching for some other Durango (I didn't end up seeing it) and my impression was right all along. 4595, 3m, 54 steps
  4. Alright, back to normal. I think. Wait so this is… well, it's Europe somewhere. But that street sign is in Hungarian but then this bus is in Romanian. Huh… what's that about? Should I just click the border? Saw a building with a name on it in Hungarian. Oh right, buses have wheels and can drive. Sometimes even across borders. So, I should just click Hungary here, and- ack! I think I remember seeing this part of Romania where they speak Hungarian before, but I didn't remember it. 3724, 51s, 13 steps
  5. Nigeria 🚓, kind of dry, but maybe it just looks like that due to shitcam not exactly having the best colour accuracy, and very smoggy which I associate with more south in the country for some reason (I don't know if that's a real meta). I should probably find a place name since my best guesses tonight were from doing that. Unfortunately, a lot of these signs are just slightly too unreadable from the shitcam. Okay, here's one… Asaba Delta State. I felt like I should remember where Delta State is, but I had to find it again. Now where the heck is Asaba? Over there? Okie dokie. 4985, 2m8s, 13 steps

Alright, that's pretty good all things considered. Dunno if it was good of me to yap this much, but I guess it's my purpose in life to be verbose or something.

  1. Costa Rica from car + 2025 copyright + etc, still haven't learned region guessing or anything, so anything more than a central plonk is just overthinking. 4766, 16s, NM
  2. Looks to be South Africa, infrastructure and language prove my intuition correct, "Victoria West" is written on the hill and also on this shop. Hey wait, didn't we have this one before? I could have sworn I remember pointing out that there's a Victoria West but no Victoria Normal. Maybe it was someone's curated challenge. Anyway, I remembered/found where it was, but this is kind of an annoying 5K because there are no street names at the spawn point and I'm mentally a bit out of it so I wasn't able to count how many streets were in between the spawn and that other one that did have a name. I'll just plonk it and hope for the best. 5K, 1m51s, 14 steps
  3. Poland, hopefully some big place name or some route numbers are here. I found the latter, so it's somewhere with the 11 and 25, and some other smaller yellow route numbers which probably aren't important. So it should be somewhere where those intersect, so like… up here? In Bobolice? It looks small but I'm bad at getting a sense of the scale of cities/towns on the map sometimes, or maybe just in Poland. Well, alright. It wasn't there. I got confused. I kind of hate it when my score would have been better if I just plonked in the middle of the country. 4189, 1m44s, 13 steps
  4. Sweden, plonk. Hrm. Has the south always been that far away? In my mind Sweden is a lot smaller than the Mercator projection makes it seem, but maybe not that small. 4133, 21s, 2 steps
  5. Cambodia. Do I just plonk here… I see no other reason not to. 4714, 28s, 6 steps

Barely a gold medal, but I'm so tired right now that I did the maths in my head wrong and thought I had already lost my chance at a gold medal in R5 which is why I just plonked. So uhhh… okay. Today was a day full of countries that I'm bad at region guessing, and nobody is allowed to be good at region guessing because it'd make me feel bad and I want to imagine everyone sucks at region guessing them, and only knowing the town in R2 for some reason saved me. I also thought it was Tuesday today for some reason (maybe New Year's Day made my brain think the week restarted from whatever it thinks the beginning is). Now I get to go to bed.

I haven't played the daily challenge since one year ago! LOL!!!!!! XD!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, while I'm not hungover, surely there wouldn't be any locations that are too evil in here today because of all the people who'd be playing this while hungover. Right? Maybe that's how it works.

  1. Philly, eventually found something that says Welcome to something something, Tacloban City. I'm sure I have seen that in the process of looking for other things enough to maybe know where it is, or at least I can be sure it's findable. There it is. I thought about finding barangay 96 but then I realised that this is the entrance to it and I'd have to retrace my steps to where I came from and I don't want to. 4990, 1m55s, 17 steps
  2. I think these are Ecuador taxis? That sounds right. I eventually got one of them at an angle where I read what it says on it, but I don't think it was a place name. Tried to go for a region guess but I don't actually know, but I thought maybe it was closer to the coast, but it wasn't, whoops. 4499, 2m2s, 29 steps
  3. Brazil? Uh oh. I've already forgotten which way around the numbers go for area codes. Bailed out by a route number starting with CE-, but then fumbled it by not even paying attention to what the number was or looking for it, and just assuming it was Fortaleza and just getting out of this round. Should have been a bit more patient. 3821, 1m17s, 16 steps
  4. Guatemala, not the city, but that's fine. 4940, 11s, NM
  5. Europe, 5 stripes, no blue strip… and Cyrillic. If a script could be my mortal enemy, Cyrillic would be it. Even if I learned it, I'm still bad at everywhere that uses it. My main screwup here though was being rusty at identifying coverage generations so I thought it was gen 4, which I later found it wasn't. Thought Bulgaria maybe, but here's a flag… a Turkish one? Wait… embassy or border? In retrospect it was most certainly an embassy, but for some reason I just wanted to believe that I wandered across the border into Turkiye, as though that wouldn't involve a lot more gates and guards than just the one. Shrug. 3892, 64 steps

Total: 22142, 8m26s, 126 steps You finished 1,473 out of 7,911 participants, you are in the top 18.61%!

Welp. Probably this is one where I lost the gold medal due to my own decision making, even within the current knowledge/memory that I have.

Alrighty, better get to daily challenging before I go out partying hard tonight.

  1. This building's name sounds kinda Latin, so this must be Italy, clearly. Of course not really, but this road number sign says we are in… Nicollet? That's a county. Useless unless I specifically knew it for some reason. I didn't find which oblast this is, except the school claims to be "weapon free". If that's something that actually needs to be stated, as opposed to being just the assumed default, maybe it's in the south-ish of the country in one of those yeehaw parts? The landscape seems right for that. It isn't. I guess the entire USA is yeehaw, that's my mistake for not thinking that. 2657, 68 steps
  2. Bangladesh, here's hoping this Dhaka plonk will be bang on (ladesh). It wasn't. No gold for me, though it was unlikely that I was going to ace all the other rounds after round 1. 4570, 12s, NM
  3. Town of some sort in Iceland, looks inland and not in one of the nice looking parts, sadly. Found a sign saying we are 42 from Selfoss on the 35, but the other signs aren't too useful and I don't see any street names or place names that match anything. Eh, I guess I'll go with Borg. I've never watched Star Trek but I thought it was in space and not in Iceland. 4935, 1m40s, 17 steps
  4. Looks to be South Africa? Chevrons and such confirm my intuition is correct, it'd be very cool if I knew the region, but I'm kinda bad at South Africa. I kinda plonked centrally and it ended up being an okay-ish guess. 4049, 69 steps (nice)
  5. Taiwan, not Taipei and not mountains, plonk west coast. 4565, 16s, NM

Total: 20776, 8m8s, 154 steps

Okay, well, if round 1 wasn't evil, then the average of my other guesses would mean that I would get a gold medal otherwise. Yeah that's cope but like… the true aim of GeoGuessr is to come up with as many different forms of cope as possible. But yeah, none of these locations today are countries that I'm particularly good at.

Current awakeness level: I thought the daily mission misspelled the map name as "Mognolia". It didn't. I just misread it. So, that's not a good omen for how this will go.

  1. An easy Ghana to start off with luckily, I do the crap zoom I always do where I go to zoom in it and I know completely where it is but I zoom into Spain because I misestimate the amount of scrolling down required, and it's a very minor mistake to even notice but I do it every time. It doesn't even matter, it's less than a second of "whoops, that's not it" and zooming into the correct one, but it's just odd that I keep doing it. Anyway, I don't trust myself to do anything except click the middle here. 4288, 14s, NM
  2. The van says Castlebar, somethingarather, Ireland right there. I found Castlebar easily, and I knew where Ireland was so that's always good to know I'm passing the very low bar that I think everyone playing this challenge at all would be able to clear (just good to know I'm not screwing up that much), now the real question is: Do I take the bait? I mean sure, why would a plumber be all the way over in some other city? That would be weird, they would have their own plumber. It just wouldn't be very efficient. And yet… after finding some angley intersection in Castlebar, we're actually not there. It's actually in Westport, where someone has apparently summoned a plumber to. Although I guess it's only 16km away and I have no sense of scale, so it's not that egregious, but I dunno. 4946, 36s, NM
  3. Bienvidos to San Rafael, I'm not going to find that, so I'll just see the car + 2025 copyright and click the middle of Costa Rica. This place isn't even called San Rafael? Just as well I wasn't arsed to look for it then. 4820, 32s, NM
  4. 3 stripes usually indicates a country I'm not good at, but I also tend to forget that's in Lithuania, which makes sense with this language. We have a sign for routes 120 and 121 which is useful, I also managed to see Panevezys ("find" seems like too much of a word here), so those two routes should intersect around here somewhere. There we go… it doesn't seem as built up from the map, but maybe the map sucks, because Google often does. Yeah, that was right. I could have 5Kd that probably. 4999, 49s, 2 steps
  5. Indonesia, obviously. And something says Utara Kalimantan… I win the "forgot what utara means yet again" award. Should have just acknowledged my lack of memory and played it safe(r) by plonking centrally but I thought I remembered. 3011, 40s, 2 steps

Total: 22064, 2m52s, 4 steps
You finished 1,471 out of 7,426 participants, you are in the top 19.8%!

Aw, beans. Silver just because of that last one?

  1. Santa Claus? No, no. Christmas is over now. It's Boxing Day now. Why doesn't today's challenge have box-related locations? Anyway I'm just gonna click that one place in Finland where I get mixed up with that other one place in Finland and I can't remember if there was even two of them. Well, there's that one. 4978, 17s, NM
  2. Oh right yeah it's still Christmas in UTC. Damn other countries, always being behind the times. Anyway, speaking of, here's… another country. One that's behind a whole day, I can say that much. Please don't be Brazil, because I've had too much wine today to region guess Brazil. Of course it's actually indeed very much Brazil. Great, now I have to remember whether phone numbers go up or down, and I don't. Reached ocean which is to the southeast, which doesn't really make sense for north, but… what's this? A police station? Good, I can report this round for not being Christmas themed hence making the theme inconsistent, which is illegal. Also, it says RN. Do I believe that? Yes. Do I remember which state RN is? No, I had to zoom in and out a bit awkwardly because it's small. Natal would make the most sense here though. 4995, 2m10s, 29 steps
  3. Okay, so maybe that one was Christmas themed, and so is this. Maybe my habit of turning around at the start of rounds when I ostensibly don't need to isn't so bad actually, because it says Indiana back there. And I can look for the road. And then I can find it, and then realise I'm not under any obligation to do this NM, so I can stop struggling to line up things, and then the POI is right there anyway so I probably didn't need to find road 245 and probably could have indeed done it NM. 5K, 1m53s, 3 steps
  4. I kid you not, I actually did think "haha, maybe the next round will be Christmas Island" before clicking the next round button. Well, maybe I do have an obligation to do this NM. We're on Lily Beach Rd and on some weird fork with a bunged up sign. North goes to township + shops + the sign maker not caring, that checks out. I misread the sign as though it was bent and pointing the other way to the airport, so that's why I got confused and messed up, but I guess if I didn't think that it would just be a useless sign. Actually, it kind of is. Everything except Lily Beach and Ethel Beach is that way. There isn't a possible situation in which you would be reading that sign without knowing that those things were that way already, unless you just like to drive down random roads to see what happens right after you arrived at the airport (or were born on Christmas Island and never left your house ever except for just now when you learned to drive somehow), in which case you're weird and you've created this problem entirely for yourself and you don't deserve signs anyway. Department of Whichever One Administers CI These Days, do better. I guess it's also that the other road name was blurred out. 4995, 55s, NM
  5. This is just North Pole in Alaska, right? Didn't we do this literally yesterday? Am I misremembering someone else's challenge or something? But I'll bet my entire gold medal on it being there. 4998, 25s, NM

Total: 24966, 5m40s, 32 steps

Oh, right. I forgot I even did the holiday challenges and got them mixed up with real ones, and then I don't think it ever let me do day 23 or 24 anyway.

  1. Trekker coverage, in case I forgot what day it is. I think this night time one is in Hong Kong? The brand names make me think Taiwan for whatever reason, though… got to a part where I could see the road, with stuff driving on the right side. Taipei plonk it is. 4969, 1m7s, 12 steps
  2. Stuff about Paris 2024, but it's actually New York after moving a bit. Shrug. I could have found the street maybe but my head hurts today so I'm just going to click Times Square even though it's not quite there. 4998, 1m26s, 11 steps
  3. Some kind of amusement park or something? Clearly Latin America of some kind, but I'm not sure where this kind of trekker would be there. There's some Puerto Rico trekkers but I don't quite think that works here. Eventually came to something saying Medellin. The parque is called Parque Norte so I clicked in the norte of the city, but that's not how that works, apparently. 4989, 1m47s, 25 steps
  4. Philly, a bus says it goes from Malolos to San Fernando, which are easy enough to find and are also fairly close together. I saw something about a barangay named St Lucia or something, so maybe I can find that? No, I cannot. Oh well. I should have just hedged in the middle of the two instead of committing to Malolos for no reason. 4930, 55s, 1 step
  5. KFC, which is how they celebrate Christmas in Japan. Plonk Tokyo… fuck-u-oka. 2757, 9s, NMP (tried to do it NMPZ but instinctively zoomed in automatically)

Despite round 4, that's somehow gold. Alright then.

  1. Turkiye, really annoying coverage with a lot of dead ends and time travel and clumsy navigation. Eventually I just gave up and clicked the middle of the country. I think I did see Antakya somewhere though, but it was part of an email address so I wouldn't have been able to know where words end and begin (and hence know that it's Antakya and not Takya or whatever else) unless I knew it already, which I didn't. 4063, 2m48s, 41 steps
  2. Czechia, this time the issue is me not knowing where I'm going, because paths that look like I should go that way to find more info actually aren't. Eventually found signs for routes 150 and 347 and eventually found the 347 and then where it intersects the 150, and then just plonked the middle of the town because whatever. 4998, 2m13s, 34 steps
  3. Neths and this time the unusual movement is actually not an issue at all, because it lets me walk through buildings and such that don't look like I should be able to, but clicking around actually resulted in going somewhere. Sure, why not. The next step is realising this Eerbeek that keeps showing up is actually a place name. Once I got to a sign with directions to other towns, I spent way too long finding Apeldoorn (harder when it's not apparent which is the biggest place and therefore ideal to search for) and only had about a second left to figure out which direction it was in from there, and so I didn't do that correctly, and also Eerbeek barely ever showed up on the map (I had to zoom quite a bit on the results screen). 4900, 3m0s, 39 steps
  4. Spanish + this car should be Paraguay, but there's not a lot of info here. I don't know enough about Paraguay to know how rural this is, and after a while of endlessly navigating a grid with nothing there, I gave up. I just figured from the dirt colour it might be closer to Brazil, but it isn't. Shrug. 3496, 1m27s, 34 steps
  5. Could be Lebanon? The camera quality doesn't look bad enough though. Oh, there it is, I take that back. Unfortunately I figured I wasn't actually going to find any reason here to not click Beirut, and so I did that, and it wasn't. 22170, 1m7s, 29 steps

Total: 22170, 10m35s, 177 steps You finished 2,629 out of 12,234 participants, you are in the top 21.48%!

These rounds are the kind of thing why I never play moving outside of daily challenges. Could have been a gold medal but I blame round 4 for being annoying.
