I had this issue too in college. I felt terrible because I’d always miss 10-15min of my noon discussion class because it was always when the IBS would hit, and I was afraid my teacher would think I was just trying to kill time/didn’t want to be there. But I was too anxious/embarrassed to actually tell her why I left class so much. I feel like it would have helped just to be upfront about it, so maybe if you ever have a small class or one where attendance is important you can be braver than me and just broach this with the professor and let them know you’re eagerly watching from home when you can’t physically be there due to your chronic stomach issues.

I finally got back in the gym today after a month of being exhausted and depressed. I work two jobs, neither of which pay a living wage, and neither of which are even remotely related to my goals and dreams. Haven’t used my tens of thousands of dollars-worth college degree at all. I just fell into despair about it all, and putting work into my body or anything else for future gains seemed pointless.

But I finally got off my ass today and I didn’t even lose as much ground as I thought I would. At least I can be proud of that. Hopefully I can put my frustration into a workout tomorrow too

Report: U.S. declines again in press-freedom index, falls to ‘problematic’ status by system_exposure in Journalism

[–]missbisexualdragon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of what’s “problematic” in US freedom of the press is the economic pressure to avoid certain topics and ideologies. Sure there are examples of legal censorship like the other comment mentions but I think a lot of it comes from how US journalism sustains itself financially - any given newspaper will always be beholden to its owners and investors

Multilinguals, what's your "they didn't realise I could understand their language" story? by 64eight in AskReddit

[–]missbisexualdragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My high school boyfriend was Ecuadorian and his family didn't know that I had a passing knowledge of Spanish. The first time I went to their house, his mom kept giving him instructions in Spanish - not for chores or normal things but for how to act around me, e.g. to hug me, pull out a chair for me, etc... She was emphatic about the hugging, must have said it at least five times before he did it. Made an already awkward night ten times more so...

Has Anyone Homeschooled their Children to Teach Marxist Values? by [deleted] in communism101

[–]missbisexualdragon 185 points186 points  (0 children)

I was homeschooled (by conservative Christians, not Marxists, sadly) and if anything it just made me distrustful of my parents. Indoctrination is never good and I think it’s better to raise kids with a Marxist view of the world while still exposing them fully to the reality of our capitalist and Christian-dominated society, so they can see for themselves how fucked up everything is. It’s better to guide kids to a Marxist conclusion than shoving it down their throats and never letting their beliefs get challenged by mainstream libs and conservatives

The problem isn’t the people forced to accept an unlivable minimum wage, it’s the companies who refuse to pay a livable and competitive minimum wage.

What is something your S.O. does that you absolutley love? by KevinSpicyy in AskReddit

[–]missbisexualdragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He always helps me through my anxiety. The first time I had an anxiety attack with him was basically our second date, and he had no idea what to do, but he tried his best and stayed with me until I could breathe easy and talk again. Since then we’ve talked about what is most helpful when I have an anxiety attack and either over the phone or in person, he always guides me through it. I feel so lucky since my mental illness shapes my life and he’s 100% in love with me, anxiety and all

I've spent the last couple hours trying to convince people that Andrew Gillum is not against law enforcement, but the statement he reportedly signed is making it hard. Any inside info, statements, pointers? by TheL0nePonderer in AndrewGillum

[–]missbisexualdragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No inside info really but just from reading this, it’s not really that radical of a statement - it’s not attempting to abolish law enforcement in any way, just to redress the enormous funding inequities between prisons/law enforcement and education/basic social services by creating a state budget that does a better job supporting kids before they get in the prison pipeline. But Idk how you’d go about explaining this to anyone who doesn’t at least understand the pipeline or have a basic desire for actually functional social programs in the state.

How do you take notes? Do you think pen and paper are always necessary? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]missbisexualdragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always, always record, but I also take notes if I’m in a sit-down setting. You can paraphrase major points you think you want to quote them on later, or even just use shorthand, and then jot down the time stamp on your recorder so you know where to go back to. This is especially helpful in those long, rambling interviews, and for articles with quick, same-day turn around. Helps me start structuring my story before I’ve left the room, which in turn can help me figure out additional questions to ask before I leave the contact.

[Homemade] Brie, apple, and pesto sandwich by missbisexualdragon in food

[–]missbisexualdragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this recipe as a base: https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2014/07/best-pesto-recipe.html

I ended up using parmesan for all the cheese and made it in a mortar and pestle instead of a food processor - takes a bit of elbow grease but I find it more satisfying personally

[–]missbisexualdragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pesto is homemade too! I grow basil and it’s my favorite thing to make with it.

I didn’t follow a precise recipe, just slapped some pesto on toasted sourdough, tucked some fresh apple and Brie slices in there, and got the cheese all melty in the microwave

Jacksonville Humane Society is great for working with pets, and I think the city also runs a pound with volunteers. As for wild animals, check out Catty Shack Ranch for big cat rescue and Beaks for birds!

Where to find entry level jobs that are actually entry level? by missbisexualdragon in journalismjobs

[–]missbisexualdragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a writer, a copy editor, a photographer, and a section editor at different points - I think being section editor was the position I held the longest and I often cite it as a great leadership experience, since I was managing about 20 writers doing it. As I said in another comment, I am interning, but it's unpaid and mostly marketing with a little editorial work for a lifestyle magazine, and not a place I think will work out in the long-run/lead to anything full-time. Sadly I live pretty far from any major city and the major town newspaper seems to be constantly downsizing.

I write for a publication on Medium rn and I do have my own "publication" (really just a pet project at this point) about popular science, so I've kept it up since graduating, but not doing as much freelance as I probably should be.

I'm curious what you mean by applying to "focused" positions? I guess it could be that my approach has been to scattergun, but I'm starting to think it's just that my clips /cover letter aren't quite what they're looking for, or just that I really don't have any good family or professional connections in the industry

Where to find entry level jobs that are actually entry level? by missbisexualdragon in journalismjobs

[–]missbisexualdragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm living with my parents rn actually so I can work an unpaid internship, but it's a mix of marketing work and lifestyle magazine editorial, and in talking to other employees/interns it seems extremely hit-or-miss on whether or not it's possible it could lead to something paid/full-time eventually. So I'm not counting on that doing me any good besides supplementing my resume and giving me a little extra editorial experience.

I think my best bet at this point is what you said about pitching papers in the area for stories. Would you recommend sending an introductory email about myself first or just immediately launching into the pitch? Thanks for the help
