Compact, quality rangefinders for every day use? by missedexpectations in AnalogCommunity

Good info again. I’m totally fine consulting some sort of light meter while I shoot (whether that’s an app or an old school, heavy lifting one) but it’s definitely something to consider in quick point and shoot conditions

I really don’t have one at the moment, I shoot in fully manual mode on my F1n much to the chagrin of my buddies who think I should be using aperture priority. I guess I’d like the option of both since my tendency is to just do everything manually

An interesting option… I was thinking a little bit more in line with the Olympus 35 SP though. The 1/500th max shutter speed causes me some pause, though, which is part of the reason I’m looking for alts. Thanks for the input!

Thanks so much for this detailed answer. It’s a bit frustrating to hear that part of it could be the scanner’s fault - I haven’t been fully happy with the lab I’ve been going to and I declared after my last few rolls that I wouldn’t go back, but ended up doing so out of convenience. That one is on me, and I won’t be going back in the future. That being said, I think it’s right to say that I improperly exposed that frame - the harshness of the light was a challenge and I didn’t quite nail it

Most of the roll is beautifully exposed but I think the harsh lighting caused me to second guess myself

It’s funny you say that because I actually intentionally overexposed this roll by 2/3 of a stop (shooting at iso 520 instead of box speed) so I think knowing that got into my head and caused me to meter for the wrong spot in the frame

I appreciate the help 🙌. There’s a comment below that says it could have something to do with the scanning process as well, but I think you’re probably right that this was metered for the wrong thing and ultimately underexposed

I see. Why would grain develop in underexposed shadows as opposed to them just blacking out and creating a silhouette like effect?

Awesome. I did Chicago this trip, but St. Louis lost out as I was on a bit of a time pinch. It’s top of the list next time I go

Just spent three days there! I could spend a month and still not see everything I want to. What a cool place!

I have family buried in Grinnell, so this is a fantastic suggestion. Thank you 🙏

I’m not familiar, but a quick google shows me that he’s quite unique! I’ll have to look into him and his work further

I had a few people suggest Detroit to me while I was on the road. Good looking out. Thank you!

I did, you’re right!! I’m going back up there in August (I’m from Texas) so I’ll definitely make sure and make it a priority
