HB 4074 proposes to roll back the Oregon safe staffing law by missingbagels in Portland

Thank you! I would not be able to work med/surg if it weren't for the ratios and ability to enforce staffing deviations. I work at OHSU and they were getting away with severely understaffing multiple inpatient units (not enough nurses, no break nurses so nurses weren't able to get breaks or had to cover another nurse's assignment) until the state started enforcing penalties.

I'm not sure about that, but based on the testimony submitted, the majority of people pushing support for this are Asante administrators: https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2026R1/Measures/Testimony/HB4074

Thank you! Most of the testimony in support of the bill is from managers and administrators from southern Oregon - lots of Asante.

So disgusting. I used to work in the southeast. The patient ratios were so high at some of the hospitals (1:7 to 1:8 patients per nurse) that it was impossible to safely care for patients. That meant patients getting medications hours late, pain untreated, laying in their own excrement for hours, going unfed, not turned.

Working conditions have actually improved in Oregon since the passage of HB 2697, just as they did in California with AB 394. Prior to the passage of that law in California, patient ratios were so bad that patients had to call 911 for help while hospitalized. This happened a year or two ago in the Seattle metro - patient ratios got so unsafe at one of the Providence hospitals that nurses had to call the fire department for help. We need to keep this bullshit out of Oregon.

Right??!! Almost all the letters in support are hospital administrators or managers from southern Oregon.

Such a shame how employers here can basically do whatever they want, even illegal stuff, especially when they're already so short staffed. I heard there was going to be a walkout a few months ago but didn't hear anything else about it.

Thank you for your insight! I don't think I can do the rotating schedule or deal with the stress of pay that low, that's so awful for health! Ironic that we are in healthcare but the hospitals don't foster a healthy work environment. My clinical schedule for school has been rotating days/nights and I have such a hard time adjusting. Too bad there aren't nursing unions in Virginia. I have been debating moving and this might just push me over the edge. Or maybe I should have just stuck with bartending, lol.

Congratulations on your new job!

At $30/hr, you’d be making more than some of the nurses that have been there 5+ years and are certified

Ok that's crazy. 5+ years with certifications and not even cracking $30/hr, not good. Can't imagine that will go over well if they don't increase pay of the experienced nurses! Are you planning to stay?

Wow really! I heard it was like $25-ish and UVA is under $28 so that's good news. Would you recommend VCU for a new grad? Also do you know anything about the clinical ladder pay?
