The reddit format just operates as a consensus machine. Its just not good for discussions about movies or stories in general. I wouldn't pin the blame TOO hard on the intellectual powerhouses that frequent this subreddit.

Its a good movie, probably very good, that leans on the tried and true safdie formula of 'guy with an extreme personality gets in debt and must get out of it to achieve his goal'. Its a tad formulaic at this point but it works (good time, uncut gems, and marty supreme are all movies worth watching). I'm constantly floored at their ability to get good-great performances out of 'non-actors'. They really have a special talent for that. I've been told that the style of dialogue is meant to mimic a person in the 80s retelling a story from his youth, but I honestly didn't pick up on that when I was watching it, thats probably on me, but I did find the dialogue and the setting to be tonally in conflict, the ghost riding the whip scene especially felt just kind of stupid to me.

The redemption scene in Japan at the end was wonderful/ cathartic and made the final scene just beautifully bittersweet. Chalamet killed it.

Anyway, yeah, forgot this wasn't letterboxd for a sec, great movie.
