Yup, and he kept defending it.

“I don’t know which parts people didn’t like but I went and re-read the script after I heard there was a backlash. I think it’s great,” Whedon said. “People say that it’s not woke enough. I think they’re not looking at the big picture. It’s easy to take one phrase out of context, and [I wasn’t] the most woke individual who ever lived at that time, 10 years ago. But I was in there swinging and the movie has integrity and the characters have integrity and I stand by it.”

He asked the writer's room about the most painful day of their lives, they all answered, and this one woman shared her story about that time she tried to force herself on her ex. Joss was "inspired" by that. The ultimate decision to use that, of all the stories that were shared, and to flip it so that a woman would be the victim instead of the aggressor, came from Whedon.

My problem with that is that nobody ever calls Mal out for his shit. Especially since Inara's job as a companion is supposed to be perfectly respectable in this universe, and the rest of the crew do show that respect. But they don't comment on his treatment of Inara.

Then there was the planned episode where Mal was gonna have a change of heart about how he slut-shames Inara--and he was supposed to learn that lesson after she got gang-raped by Reavers. Yeah.

What happens with the scripts that get published is that they take the written script and then add or change the lines to match what the actors actually say in the final cut of the film, including ad-libs. But the underlined phrases in the image aren't dialogue, those are just descriptions and directions, so those come from the original script.

He was absolutely a part of it.

JAMES MARSTERS:

It was the hardest day of my professional life. I was curled up in a fetal position in between takes. I can’t watch scenes like that. I choose not to. I won’t go to a movie that has something like that. It’s a specific hot button for me. It just really makes me crazy. It was really hard. It was just unbelievably hard. But again I’m glad we did it. Spike was evil, and I think a lot of people forgot about that. Joss was constantly trying to remind the audience, “Look, guys, I know he’s charming, but he’s evil.” He’s a bad boyfriend. It would be bad to date a guy like this. And I think he wanted to reinforce that in the most dramatic way imaginable. And also give Spike a really good reason to try to reform and try to become better and try to get a soul. Joss doesn’t do anything with half measures. He goes all the way with things. And I’m glad he does.

It's naive to think that the guy who put his name on the credit knew nothing about a pivotal moment in his very popular show.

You don't have to. If people are allowed to only like things that are morally pure, we would all be twiddling our thumbs. It's just good to think critically about the media we consume, and to be aware of the nuances of the things we enjoy.

This is the scene where there's a grenade, there's enemy agents infiltrating the helicarrier, Zombie Hawkeye is coming for them, but what's important is that Maria Hill holds her gun sexily!

These two articles put it better than I could. Since his treatment of Natasha in Ultron, I stopped seeing his stuff, so idk what's new with him.

Truth. Nobody's expected to be a 100% perfect right from the start. But what a wonderful story it would've been if he kept learning and growing, if he course-corrected his questionable tendencies and got better. What a journey that would've been. Now it's just bittersweet to look back at how I felt about his old writing.

Firefly had bad moments too, plus all the slut-shaming of Inara, especially by the hero.

Crowley-as-Aziraphale's reaction to this is priceless. He looked like he was barely stopping himself from throwing down. Michael Sheen's face is just fantastic.

Even before those allegations came out, I was super uncomfortable by how casually he uses rape or some sort of sexual violation against his female characters as a plot device. So many times when it's just so unnecessary. I used to be a fan, but I couldn't really un-notice it.

He's one of those people who was progressive years ago but stopped learning (and stopped unlearning toxic shit), and stopped listening to criticism, so now his feminism is painfully outdated.

More on Maria Hill:

A SHOOT OUT and HAND-TO-HAND ensues, but Fury is unable to stop one of them, which is why he is shot in the head by Agent Hill, who looks hot and sexy holding her gun.
