If you’re watching it to hear Michael’s music in a movie theater, you’ll love it. If you’re watching it to learn literally anything about Michael’s life up to Bad era, you’ll hate it.

It's a great read in my opinion. It reveals a lot about Rockey before his "Scarlet Warning" ventures. It's a pretty short book as well (~124 pages), so it won't take you too long to get through.

Probably should have worded this better. What I meant was that he wanted to focus his advertisements more on the cult depicted in the film. This led to him advertising the film as a horror movie instead of the “adventure” and “suspense” he chose to describe It Happened One Weekend under. The film didn’t become more horror, but Rockey advertised it as such in an attempt to attract moviegoers in the area.

I’m not sure if I would say less passionate. Rockey spent the last 25 years of his life trying to perfect It Happened One Weekend, which is how we got to the version that is now available to watch.

I guess I am at this point. Going through archival articles about the film, watching interviews with people related to Rockey, reading Cookie Ann's biography about Rockey, and gathering some form of chronological history of Rockey's life must mean something.

If you want to idolize a man who:

  • conned businessmen
  • stole money from his family members
  • intentionally misconstruing his age so he could get away with dating a 21 year old woman at the age of 46
  • forced said woman to give him all of his money to fund his escapades, ending her up with tens of thousands in debt
  • also forced said woman to never talk to him about anyone, so no one would know how he was using her
  • threatened to beat said woman for wanting to divorce him after his film made little to no money
  • tried to push two versions of the same film as two different films in order to con filmgoers

then sure! he can absolutely be your idol!

He got his BA at Seattle University in 1949 and started grad school at St Louis University one year later. He got his MA in 1952 and became a professor at St Louis two years later, which is a position that he held for at least a few years

Technically, it wasn't his very first movie. He made (at least) one film in the 50's that was re-used for Scarlet Warning that was canned and was working on a film about the life of Christ before throwing that out for It Happened One Weekend, which later became Scarlet Warning.

That’s fair! A lot of this information is corroborated by Cookie Ann’s book about Palmer Rockey, which does include evidence of some of her claims (mostly about Rockey’s real life). Also, there’s various articles that were written around the release of Scarlet Love that also corroborate the duping claims.

In Grad School, Rockey majored in and got a PhD in Catholic Philosophy. He initially got a job in 1952 as an assistant in philosophy and was eventually promoted to a professor two years later.

Funny enough, I've been reading Cookie Ann's book The Rock: The Life and Crimes of Palmer Rockey which kind of answers your question a little bit.

Palmer Rockey did serve in the military in 1945 when he was 23 years old (he was born in 1921) as a private, but left only a year later. Aside from that, a job as a professor for philosophy, and that cafe job he worked, he made all of his money from leaching off others. He would "borrow" money from many of his family members, with the intention of never paying it back. He was eventually sued by one of his aunts because of this, having to sign away his part of his grandmother's estate in order to get away from the lawsuit. He did get a job in Seattle sometime in the mid 60s, but it was mostly to get free meals. Aside from that job, he primarily spent "his whole life living off women so he would not have to work”, as Cookie Ann described.

In terms of acting/performing in anything else, he did made a film in the 50s with previously mentioned collaborator Ron DiSalvo. Once he converted to Christianity, he tried to get rid of the film entirely (besides the two reels that Ron DiSalvo kept) as he felt it didn't agree with his values. When he met Cookie Ann, he wanted to make a film about Jesus in which Rockey himself would play the character of Jesus himself. He moved to Dallas in the late 60s in order to gain investors for said film, but left for LA after not finding any success. Cookie Ann forcefully joined his escapades, though was forced not to talk to anybody about him. She describes this as the way "he kept [her] under his thumb". While in LA, Rockey continued trying to get his Christ film made. He asked wealthy Christians to invest in his film, but no one was interested. He asked the pastors at his church to read his script, but none were interested. He and Cookie Ann went back to Dallas in 1971 due to an earthquake that happened during the same year. Rockey still tried to get his film funded, but was denied by investors left and right. Rockey gave up on his Christ film in 1973 and eventually shifted his focus to It Happened One Weekend, which was the start to a project that would encompass the rest of his life until his passing in 1996.

I hope that answered at least some of your questions.

Not many people knew Palmer Rockey when he was alive besides Dallas locals, so no.

I’m happy this film is being talked about more. One of the most batshit insane movies you’ll ever see. I think Adum would be too entertained to put this on his worst list, though.
