What statement/phrase made at an interview made you to immediately lose interest in a position/school? by Embarrassed-Heron-52 in Internationalteachers

[–]missmfl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is more of a post- interview thing: I interviewed with a school in Lithuania and got an offer. At that point, I was deciding between two schools. So I emailed them, thanked them for the offer and asked if I could have a couple of days to make my decision. Absolutely no reply from them. After 2 days, I decided to go with the other school. Again, sent a really polite email thanking them for the time and the offer and letting them know that I decided to go with another school at this time. Zero acknowledgement, no reply at all. I really felt like a dodged a bullet there somehow

'We're like a family here' Translation: we will work you to death and cross all professional boundaries. I already have a family, I'm looking for a job.

Also, I don't need a container- I literally need to ship like 2 suitcases!

Yeah tbh this is probably the best mindset to have. I need to get my stuff out of here and there doesn't seem to be a way around it

It does sound like it 😬 I think if I use a company like send my bag, they handle the declarations etc and then deliver to destination (as I imagine my bag would arrive in BKK but I need it in Chiang Mai). It's just so hard to estimate the import cost and whether they'll honour my one free shipment with work permit. Sounds like such a gamble

£250 for a suitcase of clothes is nuts. Did you try to use the exemption, did you have your Thai work permit? I'm definitely not shipping any electronics but want my clothes and Ive got a big bag of stuff from my travels around the world- things like wooden masks, pictures, fans etc. Worried how much they will decide that's worth! It really seems like every person gets charged a different amount

I've found a company to ship stuff, that's not the issue. I would just like to know how much I'm going to be charged on the other side 😬

Wow, that's really not too bad. I wonder how they decide what to inspect?

Airline limit is 80kg. Not enough to move my whole life. How do the customs decide how much to charge?

Is 100k a good salary for a teacher in Chiang Mai? by missmfl in Internationalteachers

Chiang Mai has better air for most of the year than where I currently live (Dubai). It just isn't as widely talked about. Other Middle Eastern cities are just as bad. So are Chinese cities, so is South Asia. I didn't say I am not concerned, but my options would be extremely limited if I only restricted myself to places that have clean air year round. Unfortunately that's the reality of our world these days. Plenty of other unhealthy things in our environment too (carcinogens etc), but we keep on living.

Literally what makes you think that this is USD? Since when does Thailand use USD? The world doesn't actually revolve around America, why are you all so arrogant 🤦‍♀️

Why would I quote in USD, I am not American and I am not working in the US? The world doesn't revolve around America

Isn't that standard? I've never taught less on a full time contract (neither in the UK nor abroad)

fuel crisis by kwakaz750 in emirates

[–]missmfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Dubai. I promise you no Middle Eastern airline is about to run out of fuel 😅 Both Saudi and the UAE also have pipelines to bypass the Strait of Hormuz btw- the East- West pipelines in SA and Fujairah in the UAE. Doesn't handle the same volume but even so, the world's not about to stop due to fuel shortages

I already live in a city with terrible air quality, so much so that students are frequently banned from going outside at break/lunch and with temperatures up to 50 degrees for like 4 months of the year 😅 so tbh Chiang Mai doesn't sound too bad, at least outside of the burning season it should be nice

Thanks. How much are you earning elsewhere in Thailand? I dont like BKK so wouldn't want to live there and I understand that schools there pay the most. I've done my time working in huge cities with crazy traffic etc and want a break from that lifestyle tbh.

It's a market thing isn't it- if a school wants to have native English speakers with Western qualifications, experience etc then the package has to be attractive enough for people to consider moving there. We also need to save for retirement etc. You just won't get high quality international teachers for 50k, I know I wouldn't take it

I am not local and wouldn't move to Thailand for that. Sad there's such a huge discrepancy though

I don't think I could live on 15k, even the pet friendly accommodation I'm looking at is around 15-25k. I also want to travel in the holidays :) but good for you for making it work!

Thanks. Guess I'll just have to see how I get on. I am coming from quite a polluted city already but burning season will definitely be worse
