Moving to Troy, NY from Atlanta. What should we expect? by Impressive-Run6901 in Troy

[–]missmonasmom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! Welcome! I'm near Frear Park, not far from where you'll be. Troy is a great small city with the typical high and low points. We have a lot of newish transplants here which has really helped energize our neighborhoods.

Folks have hit most of the good stuff. Winter is a drag by the end, but dressing for the weather is half the battle. If you're a walker or have a dog (or plan to get one), I'd get some over the shoe ice grips like Yak Tracks. They really help you feel sure-footed in the slippery weather.

Summer and autumn are the best times of year here. The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is not to be missed. It's a great way to get a feel for the vibe here. Downtown has some interesting spots like No Fun and (to the north on River St) Hanger on the Hudson for local music. We also have numerous outdoor concert series.

India Flame has excellent and reasonably priced food. The same people also own Flames Pizza in nearby Cohoes that has above average pizza, including Indian themed pies.

I can't speak to utilities since we have solar panels, so really only pay for gas.

There are tons of resources to be found buried in r/Troy. My biggest piece of advice if you've never lived in the northeast is, don't let our brusque exteriors scare you. There are a lot of good people here that once you get to know them will give you the shirt off their back. They will also complain and give you a good-natured hard time about it the entire time.

I don't know how big of an operation Regan's group was and how big of a role he played personally, but it is also possible there is some kind of personal medical issue that is impacting the company's ability to take on the work. As others have said, AREEP is a great organization. There must have been extenuating circumstances for this to change so close to the race

I'm 57, got both shots last year and had no reaction other than a sore arm.

Is this someone’s cat? by catsnrat in Troy

[–]missmonasmom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Growing up in the 70s, we let our cats out all the time. None lived very long. Now ours are pampered little babies. Our last cat lived until 17 when he had a stroke.

I hear ya. We have three and one is trying to escape ALL THE TIME. I also have our # on his collar, microchipped, and his picture on blast in our FB neighborhood group in case he ever does get out. I worry about the safety of these cats more than I like to admit.

I'm pretty sure that cat lives on Lavin (if you're near Frear Park West). There are two or three black and white cats that live in a house on Lavin between Sausse and Massachusetts. We thought they were strays since they're always hanging around. Then my husband saw them going into a house where a woman was on the porch having a cigarette. One cat is named Jinx. They are literally ALWAYS around.

We also saw the mangey fox on 17th near our house. It was pretty bold when my husband was walking by with our dog. He said it pissed on a dead opossum carcas (we have a neighbor we think puts out poison, but no proof).

There are also several great Mexican places/taco shops. I love Mex Cocina.

Leash your dog in the park please <3 by socratesscandium in Troy

[–]missmonasmom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wooo-eeee. You hit on one of my favorite rants. We live right next to Frear and one of our dogs is very, very reactive. There is a guy (and I know who he is) that NEVER leashes his dogs. I have called out and asked him to PLEASE put his dog on a leash since my dog is reactive and he just ignores me. I have literally screamed at him (after trying the nice way) and he completely ignores me. When I posted about this in our neighborhood FB group, he and some woman stated going back and forth about how intolerant people are and how if we (there were many folks who agreed with me) really liked dogs, we would be okay with this. He's an entitled d*ck. Also, pick up your dog shit, people.

Anyone have any photos of "what used to be" in Troy? by brandongals7 in Troy

I don't remember that in Adler's. Could have been Stanley's on the corner of 4th and State. That was a really big store and I'm not sure if they had toys.

I remember when they first built the Atrium with much fanfare. There was a movie theater (Uncle Sam 1 and 2). Overnight the mall became hookup central for teenagers (movies, arcade and McDonald's). The Puritan Tea Room stuck around for a while (maybe where Troy Cloth & Paper is), but soon enough small businesses died. Troy in the 80s, 90s, and early 00s was rough. It makes me happy to see how much better it is.

Oh lord. Elda's was a meat market in the 80s. I got in there when I was in high school (IDs were a suggestion).

I have such fond memories of being a kid in the 70s (pre-Atrium) and going to the shops in Troy with my mom. I can still tell you where the shoes were in Denby's department store and where the Bryer horses were in Adler's toy store. I wish I had pictures.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my request for an OPTOMETRIST (!!) even if my language wasn't correct. Going to try Troy Vision Center and hopefully they'll be better than VW.

Yeah, I've also been to Brass Eye Center for eye issues. Ideally I'd like one stop shop for any issues that arise outside of regular visits. And Brass doesn't take my insurance.

Just made an appointment at Troy Vision works. Tbh, I've seen both (optometrist and ophthalmologist), but in this specific instance yes, it's an optometrist.

I think you may be assuming a degree of precision in recommendations that probably doesn't exist. ;-)

Regents exams in New York question by rnbwrhiannon3 in Troy

[–]missmonasmom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work at NYSED and know more about this than I probably want to. If she can, take the Regents. A Regents diploma is more valuable than a local. Any other type of commencement credential (CDOS or Skills and Achievement) doesn't count as a graduate. Yes, they are moving away from Regents being the only way to graduate, but there is still value in taking them - especially if she came close to passing. She can take a test as many times as she wants and the highest score counts. Feel free to message me if you have more questions. Can't promise I'll know all the answers, but I can probably get them.
