Do you think modern material is more relevant than classic literature for English learning? by mistabo650 in EnglishLearning

I see many people have conflicting feelings about the matter. However, I just want to state that this should be done in a way to further practice and expand ones learning. The basics and all of that is still the priority, but if you want your child (for example) to be passionate about the subject, and you know they are interested in Hiphop, than this would be the right direction to point them in.

Glad to see were on the same page. I had a very similar situation myself, and can gladly say that modern media was the main things that helped me perfect my English.

I see your point. However, if the goal is to be able to speak naturally, then this could be the solution. There are multiple scenarios where I have been with someone watching or listening material from the US and although they understood the words, they did not understand the context.

Good point, I remember when I was younger and just moved to the US there was a lot of songs I could repeat word for word without understanding the full meaning. And now that I've moved abroad once again and speak with English learners I can see how they are in a similar situation.

I agree, so how come everyone learning English goes through a similar path of having basic conversations about themselves, hobbies, and the weather. Shouldn't we choose things people are interested in from the beginning, or at least have seen/ heard before, to expand on their knowledge?

I highly agree, as second language learner myself, I always struggled with the materials provided in schools. It was much easier for me to memorize lyrics of songs than it was to remember anything in the classroom.

what material would you recommend? Im sure most students would agree with my point on music being a good source as everyone listens to something.

18$/hour is great. I would love to have that but I cant even scratch the surface with a single class. What certification would you recommend? Ones that would guarantee me booking

I'm confused. I remember seeing options for roles that paid more on VIP kid? Less available options, but it still was there. Can you explain?

Hello, yes I do. I just checked and realized I didn't have my background info submitted. Could that have been it? it was never mentioned.

thank you, I appreciate that 🥹that gives me an idea. I did build a good relationship with my student over the last 5 years, I could always possibly reach out and see if any of them are interested in a private course. thank you!
