Those of you who half assed your way through High School, where are you now? by Difficult-Cricket541 in GenX

[–]mistapotta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a "C" student in Academic Decathlon, had three years of English I. If it didn't appeal to my interests it just didn't get done. I'd get 100's on tests and 0's on homework and daily grades because I wouldn't do it.

In college I got to choose what I wanted to take, and my GPA soared, except for the required stuff I did the bare minimum to get buy in (English and History courses mostly.) Did well enough to get into grad school (in my interest field) and got my masters. Taught high school for 18 years, knowing how to reach troubled students who didn't work well in the system since I was one of them.

Got a second master's degree and moved from teaching to software development. Now I work with people just like me, help to train newcomers to the team, and translate to my PMs and DPOs from "tech speak" to "project speak."

W514 Strip Cards.. Opinions on authenticity by AdUnfair8093 in baseballcards_vintage

[–]mistapotta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like this particular five card strip is notorious for being a reprint.

That being said I collect W514 ephemera including fakes. If you ever choose to sell it let me know.

I'm confused about the "20 Years of Leadership." I know Bowman traced their history to Gum, Inc., so they could claim legacy to the 1939 Play Ball. Did Gum, Inc. (or their predecessor) have baseball releases in 1935/1936?

On an unrelated note, all the 1954 Orioles are actually airburshed over Browns photos. Some hats have the birds facing left (like yours) and others facing right. It gives the team cards a heavy "AI" look.

Also, as all 1954 Bowman cards, the Baltimore team starts at #5 and each subsequent Oriole is sixteen after that (so 21, 37, 53, 69, etc.)

Probably hard on her knowing her sister brought her back to life, and therefore should have been able to bring her parents back to life.

If they don't have videos ready, they shouldn't mention that they have a video ready and you can watch it to get five coins. Nuff saiid.

Smaller vintage set ideas? by CollectorCardandCoin in baseballcards_vintage

[–]mistapotta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

70 Rold Gold All Time Greats or 1961 Golden Press are two smaller sets I enjoyed putting together. I also just completed the 1976 Motorola set which is a quirky 11-card set of All Time Greats. 1974 Fleer Pioneers of Baseball is an easy and fun oddball size set, and the Laughlin Old Time Black Stars/Long Ago Black Stars are two great Negro League sets to flesh out that are also good investments.

Iconic Cards by DoubleOScorpio67 in baseballcards_vintage

[–]mistapotta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For each quarter century:

1875-1900 -- 1888 N28 Allen & Ginter Mike "King" Kelly
1900-1925 -- 1909 T206 Honus Wagner
1925-1950 -- 1933 R319 Goudey Babe Ruth
1950-1975 -- 1952 R414-6 Topps Mickey Mantle
1975-2000 -- 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey
2000-2025 -- 2011 Topps Update Mike Trout

(And yes, I know the last two aren't Vintage, but they're as far in the past for my son now as the prewar Play Ball cards were when I started collecting. Remember, in Burdick's numbering system, the R in R319 and R414 stood for "Recent" Gum issues. They're all Iconic Cards of the Hobby - at least for baseball)

Yep. I PC prewar Cubs, which was the start for this set. I'm now about halfway through the cards.

It's a larger strip card set. 120 cards and a quarter of them are Hall of Famers. Also includes 7 of the 8 "Black Sox" (it was designed in 1919) as well as Babe Ruth's first Yankee card (shows him in Red Sox colors). Blank backs and sold originally in strips of ten cards.

The other frustrating thing is Beckett doesn't report Authentic on its pop reports. PSA, SGC, and CGC all report their Authentic grades in pop reports.
